I swear. Some people must really hate how "racist" Orwell's Animal Farm is, too.

The metaphorical/allegorical depiction of people as animals is a long-standing trope that goes back millennia.

Poles. BTW, are a ethnicity/nationality, not a race. Is Maus "racist" toward Jews for depicting them as mice? To Germans for depicting them as cats?

This is so idiotic.

Would you be of the same opinion if the book depicting blacks as pigs
When blacks are depicted as monkeys, you say that they need to get a sense of humor.

Having said that, this book isn't for children. It's for Junior and HIgh School and adults.

Have you read Animal Farm?

The difference is that it doesn't depict any specific ethnic group as a particular animal.
Without going into detail when I moved to SC I joined a civic organization so I could buy Sunday beer. Poor reason but I was young.
There I actually meant people who believed that polish people were stupid. At the time my daughter was one of the brightest children at her school.
I was amazed I never knew that people believed Pollock jokes were real. I had 2 choices quit the organization or beat the dog dirt out of a particular loud mouth. I chose the former.
Now you as a Jewish person probably heard the same shit my wife heard growing up.
A book that children could perceive as enforcing those stereotypes does not belong in a child's library.

I never said I agreed with their decision. I just said I agreed that the people in that community have the right thru their elected board members to make that call. You seem to have an issue with democracy when you don’t agree with the choices other people make.

Idiotic, irrational, and attention-seeking.

11 million people mass-murdered by classic white supremacist/white nationalists, the majority being Jewish. A Jewish man creates a Pulitzer-winning graphic novel about his own parents' experiences in it.

Glennfs wastes no time positioning his own family as the victims, this time, of a book on the shelf in the library. :?

Can't have reasoned conversations on this topic with that person.

Conservatives are such dirty, petty social perverts. The same types are currently bent out of shape that the green M&M doesn't wear the sexy Jane Fonda go-go boots, anymore; they defended Santa as being white, and they nearly perished of fits when Tinky Winky put on a skirt.

They were also very strong defenders of the platonic nature of Bert and Ernie when rumors started to fly that they're gay.

This is bracketing how many Black men conservative whites lynched and torched whole neighborhoods, over some made-up rumor about a guy looking at some proto-karen.

Meanwhile, there are conservative white women who are proud to shove their own daughters into the arms of men like Roy Moore, and Matt Goetz is likely on his way to jail for forcing sex on minor girls.

Conservative sexual perversion knows no bounds.

So if people were to vote to bring back Jim Crow, you would cheer for democracy, wouldn't you?

It's funny when you have people making laws that discriminate against minorities, you're all for "democracy".

But then you guys turn around and say we don't have a democracy, we have a Republic.

Look, you're all for racism under the guise of democracy.

Again, I'm for truth and science. I'm not for burning books and censorship.

11 million people, 6 million Jewish people, murdered by the German government. :(

It's Glennfs's family that's the victims here, though.

This person is so far-gone he has no idea how completely offensive it is to play the victim when the topic is the Holocaust. But that's white supremacism for you. They even think they're at the top of the heap of oppressed peoples.

It's funny how Joe defends the actions of the racist right without admitting he's defending them.

Joe's saying, sure, they're all racist idiots, but racist idiots know better than the government what they want.

Joe is saying that if the racist idiots want to bring back Jim Crow, it's their right and he defends that right.

Since Glenn has gone full victim here, about how scarred he is from supposed racist treatment HE has suffered, we need to post this cartoon again for both him and Joe:

And Joe I guess those folks need to ban all the Mickey Mouse books for animal nudity too. After all, that damned Donald Duck has NEVER wore pants!

It's truly insane the shit you defend.

Yes, there is.

Of course, just white man fee-fees.

It's funny how you are soooo scarred from your past - which you kept going to because you couldn't buy beer on Saturday for Sunday. But you don't give a shit about how OTHER minorities are treated.

Art Spiegelman has given several interviews over why the Poles in the book are depicted as pigs.

You don't even have to read it - esp. the two very lazy critics on this thread who will never bother - to understand, as he's pointed out several times, pigs in comics, cartoons, and allegories are not always negative depictions. (I will admit in Animal Farm it is not for positive reasons Orwell makes the pigs the Party who runs the Farm.) Take for example the lovable Porky Pig: or maybe the Amazing Spider-Ham?

The role of Poles in the Holocaust is a current matter of debate that the Polish government, much like this one here, seems to not want to be able to have people discuss as a objective historical fact. But there have been many documentaries and articles on this. Suffice to say: yes, it's complicated, some Poles resisted, but when it came to rounding up their Jewish neighbors, most cooperated - passively, sometimes actively. And there even was ANOTHER pogrom against Jews AFTER the camps were liberated ...

Noting these things is not being "racist" toward Poles, but it is something Art brings up in the book.
