NM - Biggest donors get around contribution limits

When candidates file their campaign finance reports Monday, there will be all types of ways to analyze the data. One will be to look for the biggest donors. But identifying them can be tricky.

I noticed the other day that The Young Turks is still cashing HUGE checks.

First they were funded by that Libertarian from New Mexico who tried to run for President last time around.

Now they're funded by 3G Capital a Brazilian multibillion-dollar investment firm, and by Greycroft an American venture capital firm, and WndrCo who is a front for Jeffrey Katzenberg.

The Young Turks cashed a 20 million dollar check. http://www.businessinsider.com/young-tu ... ism-2017-8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

He doesn't look like a mechanic. Being a mechanic leaves visible physical markings on a person, he has none of those markings.

He walks when he can't get Uber or Lyft to give him a ride. I don't think liberals ought to use Uber or Lyft, they ought to boycott them.

A mechanic would have a car. It would look like a wreak, be a wreak, and the inside would be littered with junk, but it would run. I don't know what he is but he's not a mechanic. :|

John McCain's warning about dark money is real. Stop campaign finance corruption.

According to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a secretive, corrupting campaign finance system is at the root of political dysfunction dividing Americans across the country — and he says Congress better fix it.

He candidly writes in his forthcoming memoir, The Restless Wave, that non-profit social welfare organizations — the 501(c)(4)s that hide their donors and fight to keep them secret — “are often financed by one or two of several billionaires” who yield enormous influence.

Democrats’ newest midterm pitch: A crackdown on corruption

Democrats are preparing to highlight allegations of corruption surrounding the Trump administration — and a legislative agenda to prevent future abuses — as they continue rolling out their party platform ahead of November’s midterm elections.

The first planks of the “A Better Deal” platform, released last year, focused on the party’s economic agenda. Now, with questions about pay-to-play politics swirling around President Trump and his current and former aides, Democrats are set to introduce anti-corruption proposals Monday billed as “A Better Deal for Our Democracy.”

People Lose Out When Big Money Is Involved

Every week, Virginia’s 1st Congressional District Progressives poses a question to the Democratic candidates running for the U.S. House of Representatives (VA-01). This week’s question: “How would you handle an offer of a very large($500K or so) campaign donation. The Solar Panel PAC (a made up entity) knows that you support a conversion to clean energy and they want to help. They claim there is no quid pro quo and even want to work with you to explore solar panel manufacturing feasibility in District 1. How do you handle this offer?

Let’s step back and talk about federal election law. Unlike state campaigns, federal campaigns are not allowed to take more than $5,000 from any PAC. In the proposed scenario, a donation of $500,000 from the Solar Panel PAC makes this a Super PAC, not a traditional political action committee (PAC). Meaning, this is a political committee that can solicit and spend unlimited sums of money, a direct result of the Citizens United decision. However, a Super PAC may not contribute money directly to a candidate committee nor could my campaign be associated in any way with planning how this money would be used.

A further look at sewer money in judicial races

More details today on the Republican State Leadership Committee, which is attempting to buy a couple of Arkansas appellate court seats along with another sewer money distributor, the Judicial Crisis Network.

I added to a post yesterday on judicial races a comment from David James, the communications director of the RSLC, objecting to my application of the term "dark money" to his organization, a so-called 527 independent expenditure committee that files financial reports at the state and federal level.

Editorial: In Missouri, chaos reigns on right-to-work — by design.

Amid all the confusion in the Missouri Legislature about the right-to-work issue, one key fact must not be forgotten: Right to work has less to do with workers’ freedom not to pay union dues, or creating jobs, than it does with suppressing Democratic votes. That fact, borne out in recent academic research, provides context for several recent developments:

• The successful effort by the GOP-dominated Legislature to move a statewide referendum to repeal the right-to-work law, which passed last year, from the November general election ballot to the lower-turnout August primary election.

FROM THE EDITOR: Let’s bring an end to ‘dark money’

Money influences elections. Sometimes it flat-out buys them.

That’s no secret. But whose money is doing the influencing is often impossible to discern. And, thanks to the Legislature, it’s not getting any easier in Arizona.

Appeals Court Upholds Montana Campaign Finance Reform Law

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — A federal appeals court has upheld Montana's campaign finance reform law by rejecting a group's claims that it is vague and overly broad.

A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said in an order Wednesday that the 2015 state law to increase campaign reporting and disclosure meets constitutional muster.

:) Now we're stereotyping mechanics? For shame.

I had two uncles, both were obsessive mechanics; one looked like your stereotype, the other looked like an office worker.

The one who looked like a mechanic (by your description) always had grease on his pants, and stuff lying all over

The other uncle always looked neat and fresh, and his tools were always in their proper place when not being used. He used to say about his brother that he should wipe his hands with a rag instead of his pants.

The neat uncle was by far the best of the two at fixing about anything.

Neither of them had markings on their face; not sure what kind of markings a mechanic should have on their faces--unless they use their teeth to turn bolts.
