Trump Strategist Steve Bannon Says Media Should ‘Keep Its Mouth Shut’ - NYT

Quote:
Stephen K. Bannon, President Trump’s chief White House strategist, laced into the American press during an interview on Wednesday evening, arguing that news organizations had been “humiliated” by an election outcome few anticipated, and repeatedly describing the media as “the opposition party” of the current administration.

“The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for awhile,” Mr. Bannon said during a telephone call.

“I want you to quote this,” Mr. Bannon added. “The media here is the opposition party. They don’t understand this country. They still do not understand why Donald Trump is the president of the United States.”

Fascists operate on premises of absurdity. Makes me wonder if even they believe their horse manure.

It's just so stupid. The media isn't "an opposition party". It's not a party.

It's not even "opposition", except to paranoiacs who can't stand anything that contradicts their delusions. :problem:

I think maybe they come to believe their line of crap just out of Big Lie repetition working on them too. But it does not start from conviction as much as from calculation.

A big part of this is applying political terms to processes outside of politics. We all do this, and sometimes it clarifies the situation. Other times, it doesn't. The media "party" is one of the latter. It shows sloppy thinking at best, and deliberate intent to deceive at worst.

Border Security Overreach Continues: DHS Wants Social Media Login Information - EFF

Quote:
The new DHS secretary, John Kelly, told a congressional committee this week that the department may soon demand login information (usernames and passwords) for social media accounts from foreign visa applicants—at least those subject to the controversial executive order on terrorism and immigration—and those who don’t comply will be denied entry into the United States. This effort to access both public and private communications and associations is the latest move by a department that is overreaching its border security authority.

In December 2016, DHS began asking another subset of foreign visitors, those from Visa Waiver Countries, for their social media handles.

I didn't know this

Quote:
DHS defended itself by stating that not only would compliance be voluntary, the government only wanted to access publicly viewable social media posts: “If an applicant chooses to answer this question, DHS will have timely visibility of the publicly available information on those platforms, consistent with the privacy settings the applicant has set on the platforms.”

As we wrote last fall in comments to DHS, even seeking the ability to view the public social media posts of international travelers implicates the universal human rights of free speech and privacy, and—importantly—the comparable constitutional rights of their American associates. Our objections are still salient given that DHS may soon mandate access to both public and private social media content and contacts of another group of foreigners visitors.

Moreover, as a practical matter, such vetting is unlikely to weed out terrorists as they would surely scrub their social media accounts prior to seeking entry into the U.S.

Such border security overreach doesn’t stop there.

There have been several reports recently of CBP agents demanding access to social media information and digital devices of both American citizens and legal permanent residents. Most disturbing are the invasive searches of Americans’ cell phones, where CBP has been accessing social media apps that may reveal private posts and relationships, as well as emails, texts messages, browsing history, contact lists, photos—whatever is accessible via the phone.

Amazing, they say the visitor's login information is voluntary but if they won't comply they'll be denied entry. Conservatism demonstrating its ability to talk out of both sides of their mouth at the same time.

Yes. Are you seeing ICE or Homeland Security raids in your neck of the woods? There is a *lot* of rumor up here, such as one that happened in Santa Cruz today. LOTS of rumors, very disturbing.

Yes, we are seeing them here, too. I don't have a problem with them sending back dangerous criminals but not people who aren't a threat to the community, gainfully employed paying taxes, and/or the parents are here taking care of the American-born children.

Ben Carson's HUD spent $31k on a dining set while planning cuts for poor people

Quote:
In a bit of Trump administration news that hardly comes as a surprise at this point, The New York Times is reporting that as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson was planning on slashing funds for programs to aid the poor and elderly, the department was circumventing the law by outfitting Carson's office with an expensive custom furniture set.

According to federal law, redecorating a department head's office requires congressional approval if costs exceed $5,000. But a department whistle-blower claims she was told by a HUD staffer on behalf of Carson's wife that "$5,000 will not even buy a decent chair" and was pressured to circumvent the redecoration law. The whistle-blower claims she was then demoted and transferred after refusing to comply, according to a report from The Guardian.

According to the NYT, the department purchased Carson's custom hardwood table, chairs, and hutch in late 2017 for $31,561, or a little less than the median cost of a home in Carson's native Detroit. ................

Kansas GOP votes to ‘oppose all efforts to validate transgender identity - Kansas.com

Quote:
The Kansas Republican Party has voted to "oppose all efforts to validate transgender identity."

The party’s state committee endorsed that statement on Saturday and also said it recognizes the dignity of those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender.

The committee approved a resolution on human sexuality after a debate where some questioned the state party’s priorities. The lead proponent of the resolution said he was motivated by love.

In the resolution, the party affirms "God’s design for gender as determined by biological sex and not by self-perception." The document also opposes efforts to surgically or hormonally alter an individual’s body to conform with "perceived gender identity."

What's anybody's guess they're not against boob jobs or viagra. :problem:

Quote:
The committee approved the resolution on a voice vote. The committee is made up of about 180 people, with delegates from each congressional district, along with elected officials and leaders of groups affiliated with the party.

Eric Teetsel, who proposed the resolution, said the party needs to be willing to tell people what is true and good.

"And ultimately, an ideology that says you can determine your own gender identity is broken and it’s going to lead to a lot of pain, and that’s why it’s important to bring us back to what we know to be true and good," Teetsel said in an interview.

The party of traditional family values perversion is very confused.

So, Kansas GOP. Question. If your sense of gender identity doesn't match your phenotype, is this:
a) the work of the Devil
b) or a mistake by, quote, "G-d's design"?

I mean, it has to be one or the other. I'm just wondering about the theodicy here. Presumably, the wiring in the brain - that's where gender identity "lives" - is part of the same blueprint.

But then, yeah - if you can't get it up but are using artificial means to attain erections - are you not going against the divine plan of your existing body? If your breasts are a certain size and you want to enlarge them, are you not tinkering with the ordained body the divine gave you?

You know what's not "true and good" and can lead to a lot of pain Msr. Teetsel? Forcing people to live a lie and a life they feel isn't theirs. That leads to a lot more pain.

The Bitter Truth About Fighting Chronic Pain Without Opioids

Quote:
.........As someone who lives with awful chronic pain, I of course agree with him. Sometimes you do have to just tough it out. It really is that simple. I'm not being sarcastic at all. Allow me to share my inspirational story..........

Quote:
........The absolute best way to stay away from opioids is to let the medical profession do what it's currently doing: restrict the everloving shit out of them in a completely arbitrary way. For instance, did you know that CVS announced in late 2017 that they would be limiting opioid prescriptions to a seven-day supply? And that patients would have to try the immediate-release pills before switching to the much more effective extended-release pills that chronic pain sufferers need? Thank. God.

Here I was, worried about my own willpower and aspirin-taking toughness, when all I had to do was wait for doctors and pharmacies to step in and say, "We got ya, buddy. We will fucking die before letting you abuse your medication." I wish they'd take it a step further and just have me come in every time I need an individual pill. Just hand it out at the counter with a little cup of water, like Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

Of course, "seven-day supply" doesn't really have much of a meaning. My wife's 30-day supply of Tramadol is 30 pills. Take a look at the instructions:........

Well...that's one way to get conservatives to get serious about prison reform: show a bunch of Black men in orange jumpsuits with a dollar amount of $75K. Oh and drop the word "Harvard".

At $75,560, housing a prisoner in California now costs more than a year at Harvard - LA Times/AP

Conservative whites used to refer to this as "three hots and a cot". Probably still do.

Quote:
Gov. Jerry Brown’s spending plan for the fiscal year that starts July 1 includes a record $11.4 billion for the corrections department while also predicting that there will be 11,500 fewer inmates in four years because voters in November approved earlier releases for many inmates.

I bet.

Quote:
Cost per prisoner has doubled since 2005
The price for each inmate has doubled since 2005, even as court orders related to overcrowding have reduced the population by about one-quarter. Salaries and benefits for prison guards and medical providers drove much of the increase.

The result is a per-inmate cost that is the nation’s highest — and $2,000 above tuition, fees, room and board, and other expenses to attend Harvard.

Since 2015, California’s per-inmate costs have surged nearly $10,000, or about 13%. New York is a distant second in overall costs at about $69,000.

Critics say with fewer inmates, the costs should be falling.

“Now that we’re incarcerating less, we haven’t ramped the system back down,” said Chris Hoene, executive director of the left-leaning California Budget & Policy Center.

For example, the corrections department has one employee for every two inmates, compared with one employee for roughly every four inmates in 1994.

WHY DOES IT COST SO MUCH?

Costs rising even as prison population declines
California was sued over prison overcrowding, and to comply with a federal court-imposed population cap, the Brown administration now keeps most lower-level offenders in county jails instead of state prisons. Additionally, voters in 2014 reduced penalties for drug and property crimes and last fall approved the earlier releases.

State Sen. Jim Nielsen (R-Gerber) said reformers falsely promised a “prison dividend” from savings related to the changes. Instead, there’s now an uptick in many crimes and he’s worried it will lead to an influx of new inmates that will cost more to house.

Joan Petersilia, co-director of the Stanford Criminal Justice Center, said it was “highly predictable” that per-inmate costs would increase even as the population decreased.

“We released all the low-risk, kind of low-need, and we kept in the high-risk, high-need,” she said.

US visa applications may soon require five years of social media info
The State Department will file a proposed rule change tomorrow.
https://www.engadget.com/2018/03/29/us- ... edia-info/

The State Department wants to require all US visa applicants, both immigrant and non, disclose their social media handles to the US government, CNN reports. In documents that the department will file to the Federal Register tomorrow, it proposes that nearly every individual applying for a US visa be required to hand over any social media handles used on certain platforms in the past five years as well as submit any telephone numbers and email addresses used during that same time period.

Previously, this information was only requested from visa applicants who required more rigorous scrutiny -- such as those who had traveled to regions with notable terrorist activity. But once enacted, these rule changes will require nearly all applicants submit this information, with the only potential exceptions being those applying for diplomatic and official visas. However, even they may have to provide their social media info, as the State Department's documents only say "most" won't be "routinely" asked for it.

I know Drumpf wants more Facebook friends, but sheesh ...

Teachers, students want answers after Old Redford Academy dismissals

Quote:
Angela Stanley still doesn't understand why she was fired from Old Redford Academy, a charter school on Detroit's northwest side.

A 12th-grade English teacher and senior class adviser, Stanley had been at the high school for four years when she was called into a meeting March 13 with the school's management company, Advanced Educational Staffing (AES), and told she'd been let go.

The dismissal baffled — and saddened — Stanley. It is, however, only one unexplained staffing change at the school this month.

Over two weeks in March, AES fired Stanley, placed Principal Charles Davis on administrative leave and removed varsity basketball coaches Craig Covington and Robert Hill from their positions.

The moves have rocked the high school. Last week, nearly 150 students walked out to protest the actions and demand transparency from the management company and board.

On Wednesday, about 75 teachers, parents and students flooded the district’s board meeting to push for answers and demand a closer look at school equity.

"We do not have enough resources at our school," senior Symoan Stephens said between tears. "I don’t know how we’re supposed to be prepared to go to college." .............

kids in tears in the video

Quote:
........'Black Panther' trip

Raymond and Scott Smith, the operators of AES, said they could not comment on personnel issues. Asked about the general instability discussed at the meeting, they asked for a reporter's business card and said they might e-mail.

Stanley's attorney Keith Jablonski said AES mentioned two field trips Stanley had coordinated: A trip to Cedar Point last school year and an excursion to see the movie "Black Panther" using money raised on GoFundMe.

The latter had been planned for March 7 but AES canceled the trip minutes before the buses were set to depart. No reason was given, but an e-mail was sent to staff that afternoon stressing that the school board required all fund-raising to be approved by the finance department and Superintendent Yolanda Bloodsaw. Stanley said the trip had been approved by Davis.

While the trips were brought up in the meeting March 13, the official termination letter Stanley received in the mail days later referenced "professional misconduct" as the reason for her firing.

"It would seem that Advanced Educational Staffing believes that a teacher caring for students and arranging for fun, safe, extracurricular activities constitutes professional misconduct," Jablonski wrote in a statement to the Free Press, noting that Stanley "categorically denies" any misconduct. They are investigating avenues of recourse.........

CBS News interview with ICE whistleblower interrupted by surprise visit from government agents - CBS News

Quote:
Back in February in the month leading up to Schwab's resignation, tensions in the San Francisco Bay area were running high over a series of raids carried out by federal agents with ICE. With the guidance of his superiors in Washington D.C., it fell to Schwab to communicate with journalists about those raids. The day before the operations took place, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf warned the community about the operation -- a surprise to Schwab.

"She was putting your officers' lives, potentially, in danger?" Yuccas asked Schwab. "Correct," he replied.

"We ended up arresting 232, which is 16 percent higher than our highest estimates. So internally, that was considered a success….But what they publicly said was that she let people go," Schwab said. According to him, that was not true.

He helped craft a statement to the media saying, "Some of them were able to elude us thanks to the mayor's irresponsible decision." He was comfortable with that statement, he said, because it included the words "some of."

"This is a spin statement. This is what every public affairs officer does," Schwab said.

A week later, Attorney General Jeff Sessions' language was noticeably different. He said "ICE failed to make 800 arrests" because of the mayor's statement. Sessions' words didn't sit well with Schwab.

...

During the interview at his home, some three months after he quit, Yuccas and Schwab were interrupted by a surprise visit from men who said they were agents from the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General's Office. He was "completely shocked" to see them.

Schwab said his conversation with the agents had to do with Oakland's mayor.

"Did you ever contact the Oakland mayor's office?" Yuccas asked.

"No. I've never met her before. I never contacted Libby Schaaf," Schwab said. "Never. I would never tell her. I would never tell anyone...They were very serious. He was very stern with me, and it was concerning."

Schwab said it was "absolutely" an intimidation technique.

Smaller, limited government.

Is anybody else seeing this? THIS IS INSANE

We are there I guess. It is almost over, the country is now in complete fascism mode. Well, not complete, not yet. That will be if ANY documents are turned over by DOJ to the traitors in the congress or the investigation is hindered in ANY way...then we are all either part of the problem or at risk for our lives.

How Conservatives Weaponized the First Amendment
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/30/us/p ... court.html

WASHINGTON — On the final day of the Supreme Court term last week, Justice Elena Kagan sounded an alarm.

The court’s five conservative members, citing the First Amendment, had just dealt public unions a devastating blow. The day before, the same majority had used the First Amendment to reject a California law requiring religiously oriented “crisis pregnancy centers” to provide women with information about abortion.

Conservatives, said Justice Kagan, who is part of the court’s four-member liberal wing, were “weaponizing the First Amendment.”

The two decisions were the latest in a stunning run of victories for a conservative agenda that has increasingly been built on the foundation of free speech. Conservative groups, borrowing and building on arguments developed by liberals, have used the First Amendment to justify unlimited campaign spending, discrimination against gay couples and attacks on the regulation of tobacco, pharmaceuticals and guns.

This is not judicial activism, tho. Using the 1st amendment to achieve conservative policy goals.
