That's the thing, of course. The bosses wanted us to show company loyalty, but never got that it has to go both ways. Also it got convenient to blame the Internet for changing market tastes, and simply abandon print to spiral into doom. Print never got a chance to evolve and find its new niche.

It's not that the magazine biz is dead, because any cursory look at any large newsstand will show there are more magazines than ever. They seem unwilling to get that magazines have become part of the echo chamber conglomeration. This whole thing about approaching whole demographics as if every 16-24 or 13-30 or AARP member saw everything exactly the same is just SO 1950s. The mags are mostly for people who like guns, or celeb gossip, or expensive cars, or some sport or other, or whatever. Everybody in their own little media box with their respective tribes.

I submit that if Time, SI, Fortune and Money were to find their tribes, they'd do just fine. But no one wants to do the work. They just see that the audience is changing, and figure it's time to lay people off so there will be less in the mag, and they can kill it faster.

magazines are problematic since they are made on paper, el papel, that stuff which comes from the
ever diminishing "trees".

more magazines than ever with the same basic shit in all of them.
these owners realize their product is numbered and limited by its very own source: tree.

now, if they could make mags from plastics...
