New era, indeed. Everything I've heard about this guy is good, but he just moved the paper to El Segundo.

You heard that right. El Segundo. Right now, it's in a huge building right next to the L.A. City Hall, and (at one time) bigger. I think it still has its own zip code. Remember the Daily Planet in the Superman movies? The inside of the Times building actually looks like that. You enter through a gigantic lobby, with a globe in the middle that rotates, when the motor isn't busted. There are inscriptions all over the place about how great the Chandlers (publishers) were. They really did more or less run L.A. for a long time.

Tronc sold the building. The paper leased it back. The lease ran out. Now it's off to El Segundo.

To say that the few remaining employees that Tronc didn't lay off are shocked is to give the verb "to shock" a bad name. The few remaining employees are more like suicidal.

You ever been in El Segundo? It gives "nondescript" a bad name. The name refers to "the second" Chevron refinery. The first one is in Richmond. El Segundo was a company town for the oil business. Now, it fancies itself an aerospace center. Everything but a very Midwestern looking core of a few blocks is either unsafe to build on (pollution) or occupied by all manner of square, utilitarian buildings from the Ray Gun Star Wars era. These are now mostly just office space on month-to-month leases. Basically, it's the void between the airport and Manhattan Beach.

THIS is the biggest comedown of the young century.

Times just ran a photo of the new building, which they're calling a "campus." Yes, it's one of the square, nondescript structures that I mentioned. It could be anywhere. It has all the character of yesterday's dishwater. It reeks of Aerospace Boom and Bust.

Whadda fricken comedown.

I have been told that the L.A. Times lost its own zip code even before Tronc sold the building. Apparently it stopped being a small city in itself (Times Mirror Square) with its own post office. What a comedown.

The few remaining people who work for The Times (as they call it) aren't thrilled. They'd built lives around working downtown. The commute to the South Bay can be a killer. They'll probably all have to move, and South Bay real estate is considered to be the dreaded Beach Property. Dumps are going for a million five. In El Segundo. Next to an oil refinery. Poor L.A..
