FCC Designates FM Station for 'Paper' Hearing

The FCC has quietly voted to designate a radio station license for hearing. That means the station owner will have to provide evidence of why the FCC should not revoke its license for failure to operate the station for long periods of time.

The agenda for the FCC's May 10 meeting had included the rather cryptic line item: "Media; title Hearing Designation Order: The Commission will consider a Hearing Designation Order."

I was curious and looked it up.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KLSX

"KLSX (99.1 FM) is a radio station licensed to Rozet, Wyoming, United States. The station is currently owned by Family Voice Communications, LLC. Currently the station is silent."

It's a 25,000 watt station with a 96 meter antenna mast. It says it's in Rozet Wyoming but the transmitter is actually located on the east side of Gillette about 12 or 15 miles to the west of Rozet. Rozet consists of a grade school, a bar, and a post office, and perhaps four or five houses.

Gillette currently has 17 FM and one AM stations in its market area, serving a population of only 32,000 people.

A Los Angeles radio station held that call sign KLSX from 1986 to 2009, maybe they want that call sign back.

There's three nasty coal burning power plants between Gillette and Rozet one of which is owned by Pacific Power & Light. They're across a highway from the Wyodak open pit coal mine. That mine feeds them and also loads a coal trains to other power plants.
