Property Taxes in NYC Now Voluntary

Post by Glennfs »

https://nypost.com/2024/03/29/business/ ... sequences/

Seems there is nothing NYC officials can do about delinquent property taxes. So there are 880 million in unpaid taxes. Which they can do nothing about.

Liberals seem to believe not prosecuting crimes like shoplifting won't lead to more crime. Now apparently no consequences for not paying your taxes won't lead to people not paying their taxes.

After all the years of progressives claiming they want the rich to pay their "fair share" they are letting the rich not pay their owed amount.

New York Post. Isn't that the Murdoch tabloid that said you can't walk down a street in Manhattan without being accosted by kids selling weed?

Another one of your biased sources?

They listed names of those who owe the most and named the property. I wonder how many of those owners and corporations are large contributors to the democratic party.

It's New York, so I would definitely agree that a few are likely Democratic donors. The person who has done the most damage, however, is currently dictator of the Republican Party. He says don't pass a border bill before the election, and it doesn't even come up in the House. Now THAT is mob rule. NYC is small change by comparison.

So.it is Trump's fault the democrats who control NYC forgot to put enforcement authority into property tax laws

Glenn, you just don't like big cities, so come out and say so. Stop making it a political issue.

You go ahead and keep getting your facts from Rupert Murdoch, and I'll keep paying property taxes in New York.

A few things to note.

Despite NYP blaming Letitia James, she has nothing to do with it. NYC council hasn't replaced a program to collect on tax liens that expired in 2022. They felt it unfairly targeted home owners and renters, so they're trying to replace it with something

New York City's property tax will be 32.7 billion. The majority are still paying their taxes.

I can see that they're trying to keep people in their homes/apartments. It looks like.the majority are landlords and commercial unfortunately, a lot of property owners short on tenants.

Property taxes are still being accrued and will be required to be paid at some point, so "voluntarily" may be a misnomer.

My understanding is that Cobble Hill is gentrifying, and that might be leading to some property tax surprises as appraised values increase. But I'm not sure on that.

It's kind of a fun part of Brooklyn, though as a movie type I'm more of a fan of Greenpoint. Lot of creative energy there right now.

Home owner or renter if you owe taxes you pay taxes period. To try and only collect from one group and not another is un-American

We have the same problem in LA. Gentrification can destroy neighborhoods if it makes existing owners and/or landlords unable to pay the higher taxes. There has to be a balance between upgrading neighborhoods vs taxing them out of existence. We still like it in this country when a rising tide really does lift all boats as opposed to sinking half of them.

Ummm...OK. I never said they shouldn't pay taxes. Infact, I did point out they were unlikely to get away with not paying taxes.

Home/condo owners had 3 years to pay before the tax-lien law expired, commercial 1 year.

Still, it would be best to give them every opportunity to make it right and avoid evictions and such.

Then we have Trump, who cheats on his taxes and brags about it, and when he's held accountable by the courts, you say it's politically motivated.

But you've always felt the rich shouldn't pay taxes.
