The Stupor Bowl

Post by ProfX »

This thread I'm starting to explore the political reactions to the Super Bowl. As a sporting event, it should obviously be discussed in the Sports subforum... per se. Including who you thought was going to win, or how the game was played. :D

But like everything else in our society, it has become a political touchstone, and a fault line in our culture, sometimes in ways I understand, sometimes in ways that perplex me.

For example; many Native American protesters were there - bringing attention to how nutty there is a team with a mascot like the "Chiefs" playing in 2023. No, this doesn't "honor" Native culture. At least the loopy eyed Wolf retired the war paint.

EmptyG and other MAGAites fumed over the fact that they performed "Lift Every Voice and Sing," what some people call Black America's National Anthem. Please note they didn't perform that in replacement of the regular national anthem - it was just ALSO performed. Sheesh.

But then there's the people who protested the concert by Rihanna, saying it was "Satanic". Because she wore red? Performed while pregnant? I really just don't get that.

Looks like there was a shortage of crypto ads this year. I guess they weren't really looking for publicity right now. Also, a mutual back and forth of whether Faux cancelled an interview with Joe Biden, or vice versa.

As for me, I still think it was a key touchstone that for the first time in NFL history two Black quarterbacks faced each other. I also loved the Mom who had two sons in the game - one on each team - and when asked who she wanted to win, said "my children". Bless you Ma. :P

We may have to wait a while before once again we discuss, uh oh, CTE is starting to show up in just about all the older NFL players. :|

It was a good game. I skipped the pregame, halftime and the postgame so I guess I missed the drama.

The game was actually good. Real offensive showdown.

I make it a point to record the thing. I've learned over the years that if I start 90 minutes late, it comes out almost exactly even at the end when I skip the commercials and the halftime show.

I realize, of course, that in this culture the commercials and the halftime show are a bigger deal than the game, but then everybody knows I'm too weird for this culture, so it's no big thing to admit it.

I can't say, therefore, anything about the red dress or the pregnancy reveal. Not that I would anyway. The Chiefs fans did do Atlanta's 1940s-Western-movie chopping music, but they didn't chop.

The big story on today's local Nooz was that the Chiefs went to Disneyland.

I have an idea.

Enough with the national anthem before any sporting event. Sports is not patriotic unless, to a degree, it is the Olympics. There is nothing “American” about sports either. Just play the games. Time for the NFL to end whatever agreement they established with the Pentagon.

Btw, despite the commercials sports does not “unite” us.

Even Jesus advertised on the Super Bowl this year. Had to dig deep in those carpenter's pockets, I guess.

Of course, who really funded the ads was a bit obscured, but some journalists dug into it.

While its donors can remain anonymous, Hobby Lobby co-founder David Green claims to have contributed heavily to the campaign’s multimillion-dollar fundraising. Hobby Lobby has been involved in several legal controversies, including supporting anti-LGBTQ legislation and waging a lengthy legal battle that ultimately led to the Supreme Court allowing companies to refuse contraception coverage for religious reasons.

Servant Foundation, also known as Signatry, is behind He Gets Us.

According to CNN, the Servant Foundation has donated millions to Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian organization that supports the restriction of the rights of LGBTQ+ people.

A Kansas-based non-profit, Servant Foundation, reported a total revenue of $405 million in 2020. Between 2018 and 2020, Servant Foundation donated more than $50 million to the Alliance Defending Freedom, which fights nondiscrimination and abortion rights, according to Lever News.

As you know, I'm strange. I grew up in a media zone, I worked in similar, and I got enough training in how to simulate reality to understand blather and hype when I see it.

The commercials and the halftime are always talked about way more than the game. Tail wags dog again. That dog is getting dizzy from being wagged around so much.

Last year was the Crypto Bowl. Crypto continues to fleece investors, but the buzz is off it for sure. This year is apparently the Baby Bowl, the Jesus Bowl courtesy of that Hobby Lobby plutocratic asshole again, and the Disney Bowl. Natter natter natter.

Meanwhile Americans continue to be killed at random by whackos with good murkin Republican arsenals.

The halftime show was terrible or great depending on your age and taste in music.

Being completely serious can someone explain to me yhe meaning behind the dancers costumes.
I am terrible at that sort of thing and it is driving me nutz trying to figure it out. As soon as someone tells me I am sure it will be one of those that makes sense how did I miss it moments.

This is what makes me laugh. Do you fucking have dementia? Do you not remember your youth? You want to explain to us the meaning behind KIss’s costumes and makeup?

Dumbass, it’s not SUPPOSED to make sense. It’s ART. I can think of a lot of things back in the seventies that were just as silly as this halftime show. Or eighties.

I’m not a fan of Rihanna. She’s obviously a very talented young woman, but I never liked any of her songs. I didn’t DISLIKE them either - which is the case of a lot of current artists.

My wife mentioned that she wasn’t interested in the artist they picked this year. I said, but yeah, what artist COULD they pick that we would like that wouldn’t be an oldies act? Only one that comes to mind is Adele. Lady Gage has already done it. Gaga is another one where I don’t like MOST of her songs, but her talent is undeniable. She is impressive.

I mean, I watched last year’s show, and I’m not a rap fan, and it was interesting. So was this year’s show. Except for that “work work work” thing, the other songs were okay, if not notable to me. The white costuming for all the dancers, set off by Rihanna’s red costume was quite visually interesting. I figured she would start out all covered up, and as the show went on she would get rid of pieces and would basically finish up in underwear. But she didn’t - obviously because she was preggers. THAT was the special guest star!

It’s nice to see a female artist that doesn’t show tons of skin and instead relies on their talent.

The reason they pick artists like Rhianna is because they know old fucks like us go get a sandwich and pee during halftime.
While many people in a different demographic will tune in and only pay attention to the half time show.
Making it a won win for ratings.

BTW my mother as you know not only died of dementia she also spent at least a decade in a nursing home suffering from it, as you also know.
You must be so proud.

So did my wife's mother. Quit patting yourself on the back. I'll say this - my wife spent much of her mom's journey in dementia by her side. It was painful, but I'm proud of her for doing so.

Again, we're old men. We're not the demo they are looking for. Who would YOU pick for the halftime show? Chances are good no one would watch. Of course, the right went nuts last year when it was rap.

And the story of the halftime is an interesting one - starting with marching bands, then to "themes" some of which were godawful. But it was when Fox Network counter-programed - advertising for people to turn to Fox as soon as the first half ended, and they'd tell you when it was time to turn back. A special "In Living Color" had 20 million people change the channel from the "Winter Magic" ice skating extravaganza. https://www.theroot.com/in-living-color ... 1850070619

Soon the NFL changed their tune, and starting with Micheal Jackson, they brought the biggest pop stars in.

But pop music has passed us by, just as it passed my dad by, who couldn't stand anything but country music. And you don't understand that's what sells - today's pop music.

And I noticed that you ran away from my explanation. Didn't respond to it at all. Care to explain what Kiss's makeup meant?

Now, I WILL say this - on TikTok, there are some hilarious pieces where they've replaced the music on the videos, having them dance to things like The Muppet Show theme and music from Charlie and the Chocolate Factor. Very funny!

The interesting thing about the mainstream of today's pop is that it hasn't changed in any kind of real way since the 1980s. I miss having a new style every six or so years. For a while, towards the end, it was more like every two years.

We just got done publicizing a really good live stage show by a Black writer that celebrated the 50th anniversary, give or take a few years, of hip-hop. Seriously, it was a compelling show, with social issues that would get run out of Florida schools, so at least there's still some life in the genre.

The best halftime show, IMO, was in 1999 when you had Gloria Estefan, Stevie Wonder, and the Big, Bad Voodoo Daddy Band performing.

I love the Big, Bad, Daddy Voodoo Band. I heard them on an interview on PBS radio a few months before the Super Bowl and went out and bought their CD. I still play it.

Yeah, back in the nineties there was a small revival of big band music, which I enjoyed. Big Band Voodoo Daddy was one of the best. “Hey Scottie, what’s it gonna be?” “a gin and a tonic sounds mighty mighty good to me!” They also did a good version of Minnie the Moocher.

Too bad, they were BIG TIME right wing, and even played at Trump’s inauguration. But still love their music.

Yep. Just like Rihanna’s Super Bowl show. But I’ll bet Glenn loved Kiss’s makeup. He’s just being a grouchy old man, and ready to attack modern acts while not remembering what it was like when HE was young. You should NEVER expect to use logic in the areas of show biz and fashion.

Like I said, I liked the 1999 halftime show and this years halftime show didn't bother me. The only thing that concerned me was the safety of Rihanna and the dancers suspended above field but it worked our fine in the end.

Disco was an important part of music history. Say what you will but there were a lot of great, super catchy songs, innovations, grooves and beats that came out of that era. I still listen to Saturday Night Fever now and then. I'm not ashamed to admit the songs are killer.

I also watched a Bee Gees doc last year - they spoke about Demolition Night and the entire Disco sucks movement. It pretty much killed the Bee Gees. The Bee Bees were super talented, wrote a shit ton of songs for themselves and other artists and were a huge part of the Miami Sound.

I also remember the "Disco Sucks!" movement as a kid, and the slurs that came with if it was found out you listened to it.

The Death of Disco - Racism and bigotry

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disco_Demolition_Night

In the late 1970s, dance-oriented disco was the most popular music genre in the United States, particularly after being featured in hit films such as Saturday Night Fever (1977). However, disco sparked a major backlash from rock music fans—an opposition prominent enough that the White Sox, seeking to fill seats at Comiskey Park during a lackluster season, engaged Chicago shock jock and anti-disco campaigner Steve Dahl for the promotion at the July 12 doubleheader. Dahl's sponsoring radio station was WLUP (97.9 FM, now WCKL), so admission was discounted to 98 cents for attendees who turned in a disco record; between games, Dahl was to destroy the collected vinyl in an explosion...

Rolling Stone critic Dave Marsh described Disco Demolition Night as "your most paranoid fantasy about where the ethnic cleansing of the rock radio could ultimately lead".[2] Marsh was one who, at the time, deemed the event an expression of bigotry, writing in a year-end 1979 feature that "white males, eighteen to thirty-four are the most likely to see disco as the product of homosexuals, blacks, and Latins, and therefore they're the most likely to respond to appeals to wipe out such threats to their security. It goes almost without saying that such appeals are racist and sexist, but broadcasting has never been an especially civil-libertarian medium."[43]

Dave Marsh is a brilliant critic and historian of rock music, and related to "The Boss" somehow, thru marriage I think.

The anti disco movement was taylor made for cons like those here, meant to be a hate movement towards Gay folks as well as POC as your article points out.

For a while Dave had a show on XM, and I called him once. We had many musical things in common AND he was very critical Bernie Sanders, who he said was a do nothing phony.
