Eagles security DiSandro banned from sideline for Sunday Night Football vs Cowboys, AP source says

The NFL has banned Eagles security chief Dom DiSandro from the sideline for one game for his role in an altercation with 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw, a person familiar with the details told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Saturday because the league is still reviewing all aspects of the altercation.

Sounds to me like a slap on the wrist. The guy that had a player take his phone for a pic after a touchdown is basically banned for life.

He don’t have the pull that DiSandro has, obviously. It’s a shame.

I sure don't miss the almost religious examination of the weekly audience shares as if they were the revealed word of God. Careers rose and fell on what was then the 18-34 demographic. They raised it to 42 later when the population aged and when common sense made a brief appearance.

In movies as opposed to TV, it was more like the 13-25 demographic. 2/3 of the population was considered too old to make movies for. This too has relaxed somewhat, but it's still big with business types looking for metrics in computer output.

Epic win: Jury decides Google has illegal monopoly in app store fight

Three years after Fortnite-maker Epic Games sued Apple and Google for allegedly running illegal app store monopolies, Epic has a win. The jury in Epic v. Google has just delivered its verdict — and it found that Google turned its Google Play app store and Google Play Billing service into an illegal monopoly.

After just a few hours of deliberation, the jury unanimously answered yes to every question put before them — that Google has monopoly power in the Android app distribution markets and in-app billing services markets, that Google did anticompetitive things in those markets, and that Epic was injured by that behavior. They decided Google has an illegal tie between its Google Play app store and its Google Play Billing payment services, too, and that its distribution agreement, Project Hug deals with game developers and deals with OEMs were all anticompetitive.

It's both good and bad. If it allows others to serve apps, that's good. Also good if it means that getting an app to Google Store is easier. Still, the requirements for having an app there are such that it makes it difficult to make apps available that are less than trustworthy.

True. Other app stores have all manner of shitty apps. Of course, 2/3 of all cell phone apps are crap anyway.

Goodbye Showtime.

WTF Is Going On Over At Paramount+ With Showtime?

Streaming rebrands and repackages will continue until morale improves! Problem is, they kinda suck for morale and none of them make any sense. Today’s WTF du jour is the news that Showtime’s linear cable channel is no longer called “Showtime.” Starting in January 2024, it will be called Paramount+ With Showtime, a wordy and unwieldy name for a streaming add-on, let alone a cable channel, but it gets more annoying!

Despite rebranding the linear channel with the same name, and releasing some of Paramount+’s streaming originals on the linear channel, viewers who subscribe to the cable channel will not necessarily have access to the Paramount+ With Showtime streaming platform, and the original Showtime Anytime streaming app is sunsetting on December 14.

You reap what you sow Oregon GOP.

‘Thank God they walked out’: Oregon’s partisan divide highlights heightened animosity in statehouses

Ten Oregon Republican senators may face the end of their legislative careers for a six-week legislative walkout aimed at thwarting what they see as a radical Democratic agenda on guns, abortion and transgender health care.

The lawmakers are banned from running for reelection for accumulating at least 10 unexcused absences during this year’s legislative session.

Not every app lasts forever.

Google Play Movies & TV Is Ending. Here's How to Find Your Past Purchases

Google Play Movies & TV won't be available on Android TV devices and the Google Play website for much longer. Google last week announced a final cutoff date along with alternate ways to buy movies and shows through Google and access your previous purchases.

Google has already done much to move away from Google Play Movies & TV. In 2022, the company announced that Google TV would become the default destination for buying, renting and watching titles on Android mobile devices and tablets instead of Movies & TV in the Google Play app. In September, Google said that the Shop tab would similarly fulfill the role of the Google Play Movies & TV app on Android TV devices starting Oct. 5.

‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Officially Ending With Season 12 at HBO

The time has come to say goodbye to Curb Your Enthusiasm.

After eight seasons, a six-year hiatus and three-season revival — with one more season still to come — Larry David is officially ending his run as TV’s Larry David, a version of himself that he will have played for nearly a span of 25 years on the hit Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning HBO comedy.

After the L.A. Chargers lose to the Las Vegas Radiers 63-21, the Chargers fire head coach Brandon Stanley and general manager Tom Telesco.
After 2½ seasons highlighted by lofty expectations and routine letdowns, the Los Angeles Chargers have fired coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco, the team announced Friday.

Giff Smith, the team's outside linebackers coach, has been named interim head coach. JoJo Wooden, the Chargers director of player personnel, will step into the GM role on an interim basis.
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/391 ... om-telesco
The Chargers rarely fire a coach during the season but this firing was long overdue. The problem with the team wasn't just with the coach and GM, but with the owners; the Spanos family. For years, they've fielded a decent team but they always left a couple of pieces out mainly on the offensive line protecting the QB. I'm of the opinion the Spanos family is happy with the money they make off the NFL's TV deal and merchandising. When they were in San Diego, they seemed to be happy with the stadium filled with fans of the visiting team rather than fans of the Chargers. I hope the Chargers hired a great coach and staff and they give him the power to really build a team that can make it to the playoffs.

Cardin staffer linked to sex tape leaves Senate

A junior aide to Sen. Ben Cardin is no longer employed by the Senate, the Maryland Democrat’s office said Saturday, following news reports linking the staffer to a sex tape filmed in a Capitol Hill hearing room.

Portions of the tape were published by the Daily Caller on Friday showing two men having sex in the cavernous Hart Senate Office Building hearing room that has played host to Supreme Court nominees, 9/11 Commission meetings and former FBI Director James Comey’s blockbuster 2017 testimony on Donald Trump. The American Spectator previously reported that a Cardin staffer was involved.

Florida Republican Party suspends chairman and demands his resignation amid rape investigation

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The Republican Party of Florida suspended Chairman Christian Ziegler and demanded his resignation during an emergency meeting Sunday, adding to calls by Gov. Ron DeSantis and other top officials for him to step down as police investigate a rape accusation against him.

Ziegler is accused of raping a woman with whom he and his wife, Moms for Liberty co-founder Bridget Ziegler, had a prior consensual sexual relationship, according to police records.

Cardinal Becciu: Vatican court convicts former Pope adviser of financial crimes

A Vatican court has sentenced Italian Cardinal Angelo Becciu, a former adviser to Pope Francis, to five-and-a-half years in jail for financial crimes.

Becciu, 75, was the most senior Vatican official ever to face such charges and once seen as a papal contender himself.

Good mergers suck.

Figma and Adobe are abandoning our proposed merger

Figma and Adobe have reached a joint decision to end our pending acquisition. It’s not the outcome we had hoped for, but despite thousands of hours spent with regulators around the world detailing differences between our businesses, our products, and the markets we serve, we no longer see a path toward regulatory approval of the deal.

We entered into this agreement 15 months ago with the goal of accelerating what both Adobe and Figma could do for our respective communities. While we leave that future behind and continue on as an independent company, we are excited to find ways to partner for our users.

Japan oil firm ENEOS president dismissed after hugging woman while drunk

Tokyo - Japanese major oil company Eneos Holdings Inc. said Tuesday it has dismissed its President Takeshi Saito after finding out he inappropriately hugged a woman while drunk.

The company was notified of Saito's misconduct in November through its whistle-blowing system and subsequently asked outside lawyers to launch an investigation, which verified the allegation, it said in a statement.

Rite Aid Banned from Using AI Facial Recognition After FTC Says Retailer Deployed Technology without Reasonable Safeguards

Rite Aid will be prohibited from using facial recognition technology for surveillance purposes for five years to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that the retailer failed to implement reasonable procedures and prevent harm to consumers in its use of facial recognition technology in hundreds of stores.

“Rite Aid's reckless use of facial surveillance systems left its customers facing humiliation and other harms, and its order violations put consumers’ sensitive information at risk," said Samuel Levine, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “Today’s groundbreaking order makes clear that the Commission will be vigilant in protecting the public from unfair biometric surveillance and unfair data security practices.”

Toshiba ends 74-year history as public firm, set for turnaround

Tokyo - Toshiba Corp. was delisted on Wednesday, bringing down the curtain on its 74-year history as a listed company following a 2 trillion yen ($14 billion) buyout from a consortium led by Japan Industrial Partners Inc.

Under the new owner, the major Japanese tech company will focus on turning around its business, which was undermined by a spate of problems in the 2010s, ranging from an accounting scandal to massive losses in its U.S. nuclear business.

Is John Fetterman changing or were progressives mistaken about him? Yes.

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., has been making enemies on the left in recent months. After Israel retaliated against Hamas after its Oct. 7 attacks, he staked out a position as a staunch pro-Israel partisan and taunted pro-Palestinian activists pushing for a cease-fire. More recently, he angered progressive activists with his willingness to compromise with the GOP on restrictive immigration policies. Then on Friday, in what was a bombshell declaration, he told NBC News, “I’m not a progressive.”

Fetterman’s recent statements and positions have confused some progressives and delighted some Republicans. It’s striking to see Fetterman butt heads with groups who saw him as an ally, given that he’s a politician who has frequently described himself as a progressive, campaigned for Sen. Bernie Sanders and received plaudits from America’s foremost socialist magazine for providing a compelling model of populism.

One experiment from Elon's Empire kaput.

The hyperloop is dead for real this time

Hyperloop One, the futuristic transportation startup that promised to whisk us through nearly airless tubes at airline speeds, is shutting down, according to Bloomberg.

The company is selling off its assets, closing down its offices, and laying off employees. It will formally close at the end of the year, at which point all of its intellectual property will shift to its majority stakeholder, major Dubai port operator DP World. Whoever buys the test track in the Nevada desert will have one hell of a Slip ‘N Slide if they want it.
