"Dignity" in South Dakota

Not sure why this hasn't received more publicity, but this fifty-foot sculpture called "Dignity" was unveiled several years ago in Chamberlain South Dakota.

Created by artist Dale Lamphere to honor the women of the Sioux Nation. It's absolutely stunning.

It's really an amazing thing to see in person and you can see it at no cost.

The statue is located high above the Missouri River within the boundaries of a rest area on I-90. The same rest area also has a Lewis and Clark information center inside with many pieces of gear from their journey.

I have been there many times and I will stop many more times. Absolutely a great place to stop.

DALE LAMPHERE ARTIST STATEMENT
Dignity of Earth and Sky is a soaring sculpture of a native woman standing high on a bluff above the Missouri River.

The starquilt is made of 128 diamonds in the colors of the water and sky that surround her.

Dignity is 50' tall, weighs 12 tons, and is made of hundreds of pieces of stainless steel.

Dignity honors the Native Nations of the Great Plains.

"My intent is for the sculpture to stand as an enduring symbol of our shared belief that all here are sacred and in a sacred place."

- Dale Claude Lamphere

Dignity of Earth and Sky began in 2015 and was dedicated September 17, 2016.
