It's a worldwide phenomenon, with many local franchises. For example:

But really, as any (other) artist can tell you, it's a pretty shitty job:

See signature.

Well now, that's interesting.

You've removed the images and your signature.

What's up?

Every single image I ever posted to this board has been changed by the host to a tacky little nag graphic with a bad drawing of a meter saying I've maxed out my 3rd party hosting, and a link to fix that. I'm sure it's about money, since they're always nagging me to subscribe for just one low monthly fee. I'm doing too many low monthly fees as it is. I'm over the edge on low monthly fees, both fiscally and philosophically. Data should not cost as much as food and housing, but that's the way it's going.

There's a discussion in the tech section, and some good suggestions have been made for a different host. But right now, all the links to all the graphics I ever posted here, ever, are blooey. The signature for a while had text about corporate BS, but I have since deleted that too. Fooey.

I broke down and checked. $400/yr.

No thanks. Take your ransomware and stuff it where photons don't penetrate.

That's interesting.

Seems that I was still able to see the images you posted in this thread (until you removed them, of course).

Perhaps your computer is infected with some sort of malware, as though someone is trying to trick you into believing there is a problem (with third-party hosting), while said problem does not actually exist?

It didn't change until yesterday morning. I finally checked out the link, with all shields up, and it was for real. I didn't do anything from that particular connection. I had already nuked my account at a different URL. It's the same one that I've been using since goober bush was telling us that we were terrorists if we didn't support his invading the only country in that part of the Middle East which had nothing to do with 9/11.

Also, I'm not the only one complaining about it online. If it's a malware or phishing scam, it's an awfully big one.

More likely it's Photobucket's own version of ransomware. Give us $400 a year or you'll never see your images off our site again.

Apparently it changed in late June. In fact, they were slow getting to me.

Anyway, it's for real, and others agree that Photobucket's ransom demand will likely lead to corporate suicide. It's causing broken images all over the Internet.

http://www.csoonline.com/article/320576 ... emand.html

Quote:
If you’ve been shopping online over the last week or so, you may have run across listings that do not include an image of the product but do include a Photobucket error message image. That’s because the company quietly did away with free image embedding on third-party websites. It’s a move that is being compared to Photobucket holding its users’ photos for ransom.

Over the last 14 years, Photobucket claims to have hosted over 15 billion images for 100 million registered users, serving up more than “120 billion photos and videos to over three million websites.” The difference in the number of the photos served as opposed to hosted is because a user may embed the same image on multiple shopping sites, such as eBay, Amazon and Etsy, as well as on forums and other sites. By doing away with free hotlinking, Photobucket has effectively broken billions of images on the internet.

Sure, bandwidth is expensive, but the company previously made money by serving up ads to its users as they used the site. While it’s not a crime to try to make a profit without depending on ads, Photobucket seems to have shot itself in the foot, aka corporate suicide, after replacing countless embedded images with an unsightly image saying, “Please update your account to enable 3rd party hosting.”

It has also been said that Imgur isn't what it used to be, and it might not be the best choice. Investigating...
