Dems target small cluster of states in battle for House

The Democratic Party’s chances of recapturing the House of Representatives are increasingly centered on a relatively small number of states where an outsized number of battleground districts will decide who wields the Speaker’s gavel for the next two years.

Three weeks before Election Day, both parties and their supportive outside groups are spending tens of millions of dollars on clusters of House districts in states like Pennsylvania, where eight districts are in play, and California, where at least seven districts are competitive.

Turnout on first day of Georgia early voting more than triples from last midterm

ATLANTA - Voters across Georgia rushed to the polls on the first day of in-person early voting Monday, with 69,049 people casting their ballots.

That’s a sharp increase from the last midterm election in 2014, when 20,898 people showed up on the first day of in-person early voting, according to numbers from the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office.

Cuomo, Union PACs Give Dems Spending Edge In State Senate Races

ALBANY, NY (WSKG) – The state Senate races are among the closest contests in New York on Nov. 6. Democrats need just one seat to take the majority away from Republicans. Spending on the races is growing intense, and accusations are flying.

Senate Democrats in the past have been outspent by the Republicans, who are in power in the chamber. This year, Democrats still have a smaller campaign account, with about $700,000 still on hand, according to filings with the state Board of Elections. The GOP Senate campaign committee had $2.3 million at the time of the last filing in early October.

Fourth former Scott Walker administration official blasts the governor ahead of election

MADISON - A fourth former official in Gov. Scott Walker's administration has publicly denounced the governor as he seeks a third term — this time, leaving his six-figure job to do so.

Paul Jadin, the first CEO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp., resigned from his $208,000 position as president of the Madison Region Economic Partnership just before he and two other former Walker officials released a letter to the Wisconsin State Journal blasting the governor.

Black senior citizens ordered off Georgia bus taking them to vote

Government officials in an east Georgia county told about 40 African-American senior citizens to get off a bus taking them to vote Monday, leading to complaints of voter suppression.

The bus, run by the group Black Voters Matter, was preparing to depart from a senior center operated by Jefferson County when the center’s director said they needed to disembark, said LaTosha Brown, a co-founder of Black Voters Matter.

Iconic Dodge City moves its only polling place outside town

WICHITA, KAN. Access to the ballot box in November will be more difficult for some people in Dodge City, where Hispanics now make up 60 percent of its population and have remade an iconic Wild West town that once was the destination of cowboys and buffalo hunters who frequented the Long Branch Saloon.

At a time when many rural towns are slowly dying, the arrival of two massive meatpacking plants boosted Dodge City’s economy and transformed its demographics as immigrants from Mexico and other countries flooded in to fill those jobs.

Democrats spotlight criminal records of four Republican candidates for the Legislature

AUGUSTA –The Maine Democratic Party released documents Friday highlighting the criminal records of four Republican candidates for the Legislature, including one sitting lawmaker seeking reelection with a 25-year record of guilty pleas and convictions for drug trafficking and other offenses.

One of the other candidates is no longer running for a seat in Belfast and another, who was previously asked by Republican leadership to withdraw, remains on the ballot in South Portland but has not been actively campaigning. Neither of the two have formally withdrawn their candidacies, according the Maine Secretary of State’s office.

Yes, children, early voting starts on Monday, October 22nd in Florida.

And yes, for the first time, almost all state universities and community colleges will be early voting locations.

For which I have only one question: what took so long?

Gerrymandering to go into Missouri Constitution?

Four constitutional amendments are an the ballot for Missouri in the November elections (as downloaded for absentee voting). Item 18 on the ballot paper is : “State of Missouri Constitutional Amendment No. 1” This deals with five issues at once. All but the first one are clearly explained, dealing with assorted political matters. Item one in the list says only: “- change process and criteria for redrawing state legislative districts during reapportionment.” There is no explanation of the change on the ballot paper, no pros or cons, no detail at all. But it could provide a legal way to gerrymander congressional districts in the hands of a political appointee whose map could only be amended with the greatest difficulty before becoming law.

The details of the change are described in the website of the Missouri Secretary of State, but the implications are left to the reader. First, we are told that “Currently, bipartisan house and senate commissions redraw boundaries and those maps are adopted if 70% of the commissioners approve the maps.” This means that currently 31% of the bipartisan committee can block a partisan map from being adopted.
