The first term can confuse people in Europe, because European liberal parties are more or less classically liberal (right-libertarian), perhaps even what we might today call neoliberal, i.e. believe in laissez-faire, free trade, and unfettered free markets. Whereas liberal in the U.S. has come to mean favoring government intervention in the economy/private sector.

The second term has roots in the Progressive Era, and Progressive populist reforms. Not as a way of hiding from being called liberal.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_Era

In a U.S. context, the terms are relatively interchangeable.

Interesting.

It says Ventura may even run for president next time. Why not? If Donald Trump and all the assclowns in the GOP can do it...

OUR LIST OF DEMANDS

Posted on | July 15, 2015 | 0 Comments
Some people have asked us what would it take. They ask why we dislike him so much. What would it take for us to support Bernie Sanders for President? Good question.

Here’s a short list of our demands:
1. Accept and embrace Trickle-Down Economics
2. Deport Elizabeth Warren
3. Unite the Banks. We want a Uniter, not a Divider
4. De-regulate…everything
5. Privatize Social Security
6. Promise at least 1 profitable new war each year
7. Shift tax burden even more from top 1% to…those other people
8. Raise the Minimum Voting Income from $0 to no less than $15 million
9. Did we mention deregulation?
10. Never mention the words “Income” and “Inequality” in the same sentence again

I saw a segment on Up with Steve Kornacki this morning. Sanders and Martin O'Malley got shouted down at Netroots Nation by a group of protesters chanting "black lives matter." Sanders told them he had been at the fore front of civil rights and has been working on equality issues since joining congress. They continued to shout him down and he said "If you don't want me to be here, I'll leave."

Bernie draws biggest crowd yet---11,000---in Phoenix AZ!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/pos ... ll-places/

Quote:
Bernie Sanders drew more than 11,000 people to a rally Saturday night in downtown Phoenix -- the largest crowd to date for a presidential candidate whose audiences have been swelling in recent months.

The Vermont senator, who has emerged as the leading alternative to Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democratic nomination, got a rock-star-like reception from supporters who streamed into a cavernous lower-level room of the city's convention center.

Aides to the self-described democratic socialist had originally booked a Phoenix theater that could accommodate fewer than half the number of people who turned out. The crowd estimate of more than 11,000 people was provided by staff at the convention center, where Sanders also appeared Saturday at a convention of progressive activists.

DALLAS — U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent running for president as a Democrat, rallied thousands of Texans here Sunday afternoon....

"One of the problems that exists in American politics today, in my view, is that the Democratic Party has conceded half of the states in the country at the national level, and that's wrong," Sanders told a raucous crowd inside a downtown hotel ballroom. "We've got to fight them in 50 states, including Texas." ...

Organizers estimated the rally drew more than 7,000 people, though a more official count was expected later in the day. In any case, the event appeared to be the largest held by any presidential candidate in Texas so far this election cycle.

7,000 in Dallas! Wow!

It's gonna be a lot tougher for Clinton to kick Bernie out of the debates, unlike the success she had with Kucinich back in 08.

National Review Calls Bernie Sanders - who's Jewish and lost parents in the Holocaust - a "Nazi".
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/n ... nders-nazi

Yes, it's a conservative rag, and William F. Buckley was a arrogant sneering prick, but at least he tried to get the anti-Semites out of the magazine. Now they're publishing nonsense like this.

Most of the article is nonsensical. The Bernie is a racist xenophobe meme just won't fly.

But it's the ultimate silliness that drives me crazy. Yes, Bernie is a democratic socialist who wants socialism in one country, i.e. yes technically "national socialism". Well, duh, so do all other socialist parties in the world not trying to create a global one-world government.

And while the Nazis did technically call themselves "national socialists," they were really fascists, and suppressed labor unions and attacked other ACTUAL left wing socialist parties ... we might say they were SINOs (socialists in name only), and their use of the name no more makes them ACTUAL socialists than the Democratic Peoples' Republic of North Korea is an actual democracy.

Of course, I don't expect much from National Review ... but maybe at least not crap like this.

THIS ^

Nationalist Socialist is a dog whistle. Maybe he didn't write "nazis" but that's what he meant.

Barney Frank to Progressives: Ditch Bernie Sanders

Former Representative Barney Frank (D-MA) — who, until recently, was caught in an John Updike/John Irving vortex of confusion with other Northeastern liberal Bernie Sanders (I-VT) — told his fellow liberals to ignore the appeal of the surging Democratic candidate and stick with frontrunner Hillary Clinton.
