How to have an argument with a right-wing Trump defender

In his new book “The Right Side of History: How Reason and Moral Purpose Made the West,” Ben Shapiro argues that reason is essential to the advancement of human progress. The 35-year-old conservative commentator has positioned himself as something of a latter-day William F. Buckley Jr. — an intellectual superstar in a quadrant of politics that seems increasingly resistant to facts or rational inquiry. Shapiro has denounced white supremacists and the alt-right, and distanced himself from President Trump (much as Buckley denounced the John Birch Society and other right-wing extremists of his day), while frequently calling upon the venerable classical and biblical Western thinkers.Shapiro has also frequently discussed occasions when he has been threatened or faced what he describes as efforts to silence him, especially on college campuses. In a society with a healthy culture of free speech, of course, Shapiro would be able to argue his points as fearlessly as he wants, without the specter of violence or being otherwise persecuted.

Whether Shapiro himself actually models the open dialogue he claims to advocate, however, is a different question. In his book, he writes:

Trump’s Fed pick Stephen Moore was held in contempt of court over $300K alimony and child support debt: report

President Donald Trump’s pick for the Federal Reserve Board was held in contempt of court in 2012 over failure to pay more than $300,000 in alimony and child support.

The Guardian reported Saturday that court documents show Stephen Moore, a conservative economist recently nominated by the president to serve on the board of the Federal Reserve after penning a flattering column, owed the money to his ex-wife Allison Moore in the wake of their divorce.

Rep. Justin Amash considers Libertarian challenge to Trump

The Libertarian Party has urged Rep. Justin Amash to consider mounting a third-party challenge to President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

The Michigan Republican told his hometown paper that while he would not “rule out” a bid, he has not completely “thought through” his plans.

Great!

Democrats are taking a page out of Trump’s playbook to blow him out of the water in 2020

Democrats looking to not only win their party’s presidential nomination, but unseat President Donald Trump, are stealing a page from his 2016 playbook to fight fire with fire in 2020, reports Politico.

Noting the changing nature of how the public receives information — with social media leading the way — some Democratic contenders are ceding more power to their digital directors in an effort to reach more voters.

Warner Bros. Shut Down Trump’s 2020 Video For Using The “Dark Knight Rises” Score

President Donald Trump on Tuesday posted a video on Twitter that appeared to be part of his 2020 reelection campaign. In less than three hours, it had already amassed over 1 million views, but by late Tuesday night, the video was no longer available.

BuzzFeed News has learned that Warner Bros. Pictures filed a copyright infringement complaint to have the video taken down because it uses part of the score from the studio's 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises.

Nancy Pelosi reveals her secret to predicting whether Trump and the GOP will go down in 2020

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has revealed how she plans to ensure sweeping Democratic wins in 2020 — and her simple metric for predicting their chances a year ahead of time.

Roll Call reported that during an annual retreat, Pelosi told fellow Democrats that she can “predict how well we will do in an election one year in advance because one year in advance is where you see where the president of the party is,”

Bill Weld officially announces he is challenging Trump for GOP nomination in 2020

(CNN) Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld announced Monday he is officially entering the race for president, becoming the first Republican to challenge President Donald Trump in the 2020 race.

"Ours is a nation built on courage, resilience, and independence. In these times of great political strife, when both major parties are entrenched in their 'win at all cost' battles, the voices of the American people are being ignored and our nation is suffering," Weld, who had previously formed an exploratory committee, said in a statement.

The US government is preventing investigations into war crimes in Afghanistan

On April 12, 2019, the International Criminal Court said that it would not pursue a war crimes investigation against the U.S. military for its actions in Afghanistan. A very thick file was closed in The Hague.

Almost a decade ago, on February 12, 2010, U.S. Special Operations Forces arrived at the home of Haji Sharabuddin in Khataba (Paktia Province, Afghanistan). The family of Sharabuddin was celebrating the birth of a grandson. Inside the home were close family members (including a police investigator and a government prosecutor) as well as the vice-chancellor of Gardez University, Sayed Mohammed Mal. At 3 a.m., the U.S. forces attacked the home, killing five members of the family including Sharabuddin’s son—Mohammed Dawood—who was the police investigator. After the killing, the soldiers carried the bodies into the house and removed the bullets with a knife. They did not want to leave evidence of their actions. They then ransacked the home—including stealing money—and left. The U.S. military said that those whom they killed were insurgents. Both the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission and the Criminal Investigations Department of the Afghan Ministry of the Interior found this allegation to be false. A war crime had been committed here.

House takes Trump’s wall-building plans to court

The House of Representatives went to court on Tuesday trying to block Donald Trump from building a border wall with money appropriated for other purposes. The Trump administration is moving to spend about $6 billion in money intended for military construction and counterdrug efforts on Trump’s wall, and House lawyers have asked U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden for a preliminary injunction to block the process of moving the money, rather than take on the national emergency declaration directly.

“Defendants are moving quickly to construct the border wall, and they have awarded contracts against funds that Congress did not appropriate for that purpose. And more contracts are coming soon,” the House’s 56-page legal motion reads. “Once made, these unconstitutional expenditures cannot be undone, and the grave institutional injury inflicted on the House cannot be remedied.”

Liberal activists occupy Venezuelan embassy in Washington to oppose Trump policy

WASHINGTON – Liberal activists are bracing for a showdown with the Trump administration Thursday at an unusual location: Venezuela's embassy, a stately four-story building in one of Washington's most exclusive neighborhoods.

That building was vacated earlier this year after President Donald Trump denounced Venezuela's president Nicolas Maduro as illegitimate and recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country's true leader. Maduro quickly blasted the move and recalled most of his diplomatic staff from the U.S., leaving Venezuela's embassy nearly empty.

This Trump-linked super PAC is part of an ‘explosive’ plot to push Europe’s voters into the arms of the far right

A controversial Madrid-based campaign group, supported by American and Russian ultra-conservatives, is working across Europe to drive voters toward far-right parties in next month’s European Parliament elections and in Spain’s national elections this Sunday, a new openDemocracy report reveals.

Open Democracy’s findings have caused alarm among lawmakers who fear that Trump-linked conservatives are working with European allies to import a controversial U.S.-style super PAC model of political campaigning to Europe—opening the door to large amounts of dark money flowing unchecked into elections and referenda.

Unless the House investigates Gorsuch & Kavanaugh then he's screwed big time

Trump believes the Supreme Court will give him a ‘get out of jail free’ card for ‘all’ his crimes: report

According to a report in the Washington Post, President Donald Trump is of the belief that the Supreme Court — which contains two of his own appointees — will keep him from having to face jail time.

The president is banking on a longheld tradition that sitting presidents can’t be indicted, with the Post noting that Trump tweeted “I DID NOTHING WRONG. If the partisan Dems ever tried to Impeach, I would first head to the U.S. Supreme Court.”

Trump's washing machine tariffs are costing Americans almost $100 more per appliance

A little more than a year after President Donald Trump slapped a 20 percent tariff on imported washing machines, new research finds that American shoppers have been the ones to pay the price.

A study conducted by two researchers at the University of Chicago and a Federal Reserve Board Governor found that washers cost an average of 12 percent more after the imposition of the tariffs, or roughly $86 to $92 more per appliance.

California Senate passes bill that would keep Trump off 2020 ballot unless he releases tax returns

The California state Senate on Thursday approved a bill to require candidates appearing on the presidential primary ballot — including President Trump — to release five years' worth of income tax returns.

The measure was approved in a 27-10 vote, according to The Associated Press. California, for the first time, will be one of the first states to hold its presidential primary in the 2020 cycle.

States Sue to Learn Why Trump Changed IRS Donor-Reporting Rules

New York and New Jersey have sued to find out why President Donald Trump’s administration scrapped an Internal Revenue Service rule requiring some tax-exempt organizations to disclose their donors.

The change, announced in July 2018, eliminates from federal and state filings a category of information the states rely on to identify potential self-dealing transactions, criminal conduct and other risks in the nonprofit sector, New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement Monday.
