Having a union pays off for UPS

Post by gounion »

As i’ve always said, you get what you pay for:
Helminski’s dream industry has lately become more of a nightmare scenario at rival FedEx Corp. The massive labor shortage that’s rocked the U.S. since the pandemic and disrupted long-established employment relationships hasn’t had much impact on UPS, which pays its unionized drivers the highest wages in the industry. That’s helped it maintain a stable workforce and rising profits throughout the current disruptions. Meanwhile, lower-paying, nonunionized FedEx racked up $450 million in extra costs because of labor shortages. And while UPS easily beat earnings expectations and predicted a rising profit margin in the U.S. for the fourth quarter, FedEx signaled that its profit margin will fall further. The lack of workers is taking a toll on its reliability, too. FedEx’s recent on-time performance for express and ground packages has sunk to 85%, while UPS has met deadlines on 95% of those packages, according to data collected by ShipMatrix Inc.
Much more at the link. Having a union provides UPS with a experienced, reliable workforce. FedEx is penny wise and pound foolish.

I would tend to agree with the interpretation of the "labor shortage" as more a covid-induced result of a good-contract shortage, causing many temporarily idled employees to look for better work during the shutdown. Obviously, quite a few of them found it.

I have a friend who worked for UPS as a delivery driver. He injured his back when he made a delivery at night. The homeowner had a deep hole in his yard by the driveway that wasn't covered or marked and there were no lights in the front where someone could see the hole. He fell in and hurt his back and was out of work for a long while. He got workman's compensation as well as having job provided health insurance. He sued the homeowner and won a judgement but he couldn't return back to work because of his back. He got a better job with a Navy contractor and is doing well. Had he not had a union job with benefits I doubt he would have recovered physically, mentally, and financially as fast.

We live in the country and our mail is delivered by non-union contractors. I have no clue as to what they earn but it must be ok as we have had the same carrier for decades.

Did you know we're not taking about the postal service? Yes or no?

And that's NOT what they did with the pensions in the postal service. They are trying to bankrupt the postal service in order to shut it down and privatize it.

But we ARE lucky the Democrats were able to pass the Butch Lewis Act, which protects private pensions.

His friend drove for UPS. That is what we were talking about, UPS vs. FedEx.

Sad thing is, you didn't realize there's a difference between the United Parcel Service and the United States Postal Service.

Well damn I f##ked up I thought this was about the USPS.

FedEx over the road trucks until recently were always driving to fast and dangerously.
Recently they have slowed them down to 65. When that happens it is either because the insurance companies forced them to, or the federal dot.

As for the local package guys where I live they are almost all contractors and fedex works them like dogs.

So you are correct on this issue.

Your first reaction is always to argue AGAINST. If I were to say the sky is blue, you'll scream that it's actually green.

You should realize that I do know my shit on labor issues. For instance, I know that the GOP regulations on the USPS (United States Postal Service, so as not to confuse you) were NOT to protect the workers, but instead to bankrupt the service so they could privatize it.
