Affordable Housing Bill

Post by Glennfs »

Governor DeSantis just signed a 711 million dollar affordable housing bill into law.

On both the state and federal level the republican party is enacting and trying to enact laws to help everyone especially everyday regular folks like most of us.

While the democratic party panders to a small but vocal minority worried about teaching adult sexuality to 6 year olds.

Better late than never, I suppose.

Chris King: Florida housing prices are bad; Ron DeSantis makes it worse
While Florida families struggle to afford rent, Ron DeSantis is playing politics.

Housing in Florida is more unaffordable than ever. And unfortunately for all of us, the policies of Gov. Ron DeSantis are making it worse every year.

Under DeSantis, there has been no vision, no compassion, and no eye to the future housing needs of Florida. He touts the sheer number of people moving into our state as a badge of honor, without bothering to care if these new transplants have any place to live. In fact, last year alone, DeSantis signed a law permanently cutting the housing affordability trust fund in half. This comes on top of year after year of the legislature’s cuts and DeSantis’ veto pen. In case it wasn’t already crystal clear whether our Governor cares about skyrocketing rents, he failed to mention housing affordability even once during his hourlong State of the State address.

I'm glad he decided to do something beyond just waging culture wars with cartoon characters.

The link strongly endorsed Charlie Crist and his plan. Which leads me to ask what if anything did Crist do about the problem when he was governor.

Governor's Budget Shows Continuing Support for Affordable Housing in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, FL - When Gov. Charlie Crist presents his 2008-09 state budget recommendations today, there will be more than $300 million earmarked for affordable housing programs in the State of Florida, including a $75-million-dollar increase to help stimulate economic recovery in the state.

This is what he ran on in 2022.

Charlie Crist announces affordable housing plan in campaign for governor
Crist’s plan would aim to limit the influence of large investors on Florida’s housing markets.

U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist lays the blame for Florida’s lack of affordable housing on two things: Wall Street investors and Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Crist, a Democrat running for governor, on Thursday released his proposal to address Florida’s housing crisis that focuses on curbing the influence of large real estate investment firms he says are buying up housing stock in Florida neighborhoods and driving up rent prices.

“We’re in an affordability crisis like I’ve never seen,” Crist said in an interview with the Tampa Bay Times. He called large investment firms “vultures” that prey on tenants, homebuyers and the housing market.

Under the plan, Crist would direct an appointed state “housing czar” to assist local governments in bringing down home prices. Those efforts could include setting limits on the number of single-family rental properties an investment firm can own in a given market and taxing properties purchased by investors and left vacant.
