A New Petition From House Democrats Could Complicate Nancy Pelosi’s Future

In a move described as a direct shot at Nancy Pelosi, some Democrats are trying to make it more difficult for one of their own to become speaker of the House.

At least 10 Democrats in the lower chamber have signed on to a letter to Caucus Chair Joe Crowley seeking a change to caucus rules that would raise the number of votes required to nominate a candidate for speaker. Current rules mandate that a nominee receive support from only a simple majority of caucus members before advancing to the floor for a vote. The letter requests that threshold be changed to 218, a majority of the House.

New York's Worst-in-the-Country Voting System

Clumsily designed ballots. An antiquated registration process. Confusing deadlines and outdated laws. Long lines and no early voting. New York State—caricatured as a bastion of progressive politics—has some of the most retrograde voting laws and practices in the nation. Reports of dysfunction from Thursday’s primary only add to the evidence: New York is disenfranchising its citizens.

How dire is it? A few numbers. Only 57 percent of eligible voters cast a ballot in the 2016 presidential election, ranking the Empire State 41st in the nation for turnout. In the last midterm election, turnout statewide hit an abysmal 34 percent, almost the lowest in the country. In New York City, just 12 percent of eligible voters showed up for the 2017 mayoral primary.

Conservative Democrats Making Pitch to Win Back Rural Voters

A group of conservative House Democrats is making an appeal to the rural voters who’ve mostly abandoned the party at a time when they say Donald Trump’s agenda on issues such as tariffs, health care and the rural economy has created an opening.

The 18-member Blue Dog Coalition, which has been working to prevent a leftward shift in the Democrats’ House delegation, released Thursday what it calls a plan to address those issues, along with infrastructure and veterans affairs, in rural areas.

I'm happy to see this ad because Duncan Hunter is an embarrassment to his constituents and the nation.

Harckham Wins State Senate Democratic Primary

HUDSON VALLEY,N.Y. - Peter Harckham (D-South Salem) will challenge incumbent state Sen. Terrence Murphy (R-Yorktown) in November’s general election after defeating Robert Kesten (D-South Salem) in yesterday’s Democratic Party primary, according to unofficial election results.

More than 21,000 votes were cast in the 40th State Senate District primary, with Harckham, a former Westchester County legislator, picking up 53.6 percent of the vote between Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties.

GOP heading for midterm wipeout as 'blue wave' scenario gives Democrats a 12-point generic ballot lead: NBC-WSJ poll

Congressional Republicans are facing a mid-term election wipeout fueled by voter resistance to President Donald Trump, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

The survey, six weeks before Americans head to the polls, shows Democrats leading Republicans by 52 percent to 40 percent for control of Congress. If it holds, that 12 percentage point margin would suggest a "blue wave" large enough to switch control of not just the House but also the Senate.

Scott Taylor Staffers Submitted at Least 59 Fraudulent Signatures — For His Opponent

Rep. Scott Taylor’s campaign staff submitted 59 fraudulent signatures on ballot petition documents for another candidate who is running as an independent against the Virginia Republican and his Democratic challenger.

The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk reached 115 of the 584 people whose names appear on the papers that five Taylor staffers, including his campaign manager, filed on behalf of Shaun Brown.

Been reading about this...so far the husband wont say how she died.

Democratic seat lost now?

I will be suspicious, sorry. If that is the case, I dont know enough about the district.

Putin will kill any and all democrats he can. So yes, that is where my first thought goes and it is not ridiculous. Now the facts may well be very non suspicious, but until I know those facts I will wonder.

The district is solid R. She had virtually no chance of winning. 538 has it down as 63% to 37% projected vote share.

Analyst Finds Gov. Scott Walker May Have Cost Wisconsin 80,000 Jobs

When Gov. Scott Walker mounted his first gubernatorial campaign he made a bold claim: that during his first term as governor he would create 250,000 jobs for Wisconsinites. He is just now nearing that figure after nearly two terms on the job.

Most economists believe that governors have a limited impact on how many jobs are created in a given state. That being said, local economist Bruce Thompson believes Walker’s policies may have actually resulted in a loss of 80,000 jobs in Wisconsin.

House Dems punt action on rule change for Speaker nominee

House Democrats on Wednesday punted on consideration of an internal rule change that would have made it tougher for Speaker hopefuls to secure the party’s nomination, marking a victory for Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who wants to reclaim the gavel next year.

Leaving a weekly meeting of the House Democratic Caucus in the Capitol basement, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said “there was a parliamentary discussion and the motion was withdrawn and we’ll consider it after the election.”

LIKE OTHER PROGRESSIVE CANDIDATES IN NEW YORK, JULIA SALAZAR WAS BUOYED BY NEIGHBORHOODS EXPERIENCING GENTRIFICATION

WHEN ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ won her upset victory over Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley, many pundits assumed that this was entirely due to demographic changes in the district that were unfriendly to a white congressman.

But a post-election survey of Ocasio-Cortez’s race suggested that this was not the case: Her upset was due in large part to high voter turnout in gentrified neighborhoods in Queens. The bulk of her votes came from areas that were experiencing rapid gentrification, and were less uniformly black or Hispanic than districts that turned out in high numbers for Crowley.
