Senate races: GOP up in Texas, Tennessee; Dems up in Arizona, New Jersey — CBS News poll

The battle for Senate control finds Democrats trying to mount upset challenges in a string of typically Republican states, and this round of Battleground Tracker polls shows them having at best mixed results so far. In the closely watched race in Texas, incumbent Republican Ted Cruz has a lead over Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke, at six points among likely voters, 50-44.

In Arizona — an open seat in a state that went for President Trump in 2016 — Democrat Kyrsten Sinema has a slight edge over Republican Martha McSally, 47-44.

Advocates Encourage Voting Rights for NY Parolees

Albany, NY – The politics of fear and the false connection between race, dangerousness, and criminality have served as obstacles to parole justice for far too long, according to Anthony Thompson, the director of the New York University Law Center on Race Inequality and the Law.

“We should be working to change that paradigm, and implementing reforms that help get people who have paid their debt to society and changed their lives for the better out of prison and successfully reintegrated into their communities,” Thompson said on Monday, as advocates rallied in New York’s capital to call out Senate GOP leadership’s agenda which Democrats and others claim is an interference in independent parole board decisions and the people’s right to vote.

SCOTUS Lets North Dakota Enforce Full Voter ID Law For Upcoming Midterms

The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed North Dakota to enforce for the midterm elections its full voter ID law, which a federal judge had previously sought to relax in a lawsuit brought by Native Americans in the state.

The law lets voters who don’t have the required ID show certain supplemental documentation with their name and street address. Native Americans in the state had challenged a provision in the law requiring that the address be a residential street address, rather than a PO Box or other kind of address, given that some members of some tribes don’t have residential street addresses.

Kansas GOP Official Mocks KS-03 Candidate Sharice Davids With Homophobic and Racial Slurs

The Kansas Republican Party’s racism has been on full display since Nixon’s Southern Strategy, turning a state which once bled and burned to expel slaveholders and their supporters into a bastion of intolerance. Former Governor Sam Brownback and current Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Kris Kobach have thrived and risen politically, buoyed by white backlash.

The past weekend, Republican Precinct Committeeman Michael Kalny of Shawnee responded on the Kansas City Star’s comment section to a few negative posts about Third Congressional District incumbent Kevin Yoder. Kalny skipped the issues entirely, attacking Democratic challenger Sharice Davids, a Native American and out lesbian:

Poliquin and Golden slug it out in first debate in 2nd Congressional District race

In the first debate of the election campaign for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, two-term U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin called his Democratic challenger a radical at least five times, a socialist twice and young three times.

Within minutes of the start of the televised debate, Poliquin, a Republican, strung all of them together to declare that Lewiston state Rep. Jared Golden “is a young radical who embraces a socialist agenda.”

Democrats Dominate First Day Of Early Voting In Iowa

Democrats in Iowa leapt at their first chance to cast a ballot in the 2018 election yesterday, far outpacing the number of Republicans who did the same.

The Secretary of State’s office reported this morning that 7,870 votes are already in the bank from the first day and a half of early voting. Of those, 4,421 came from registered Democrats, 2,403 from registered Republicans and 1,008 from registered No Party voters.

GOP state legislator snatches mic from the hand of his female opponent — then throws it back at her during debate

A Republican state legislator in Minnesota snatched the microphone out of his female Democratic opponent’s hands during a debate to make a point — and drew gasps from the crowd watching them.

Rochester, Minnesota’s Post-Bulletin newspaper reported that the state Rep. Duane Quam (R) made the aggressive gesture towards challenger Jamie Mahlberg during a debate hosted by the city’s League of Women Voters in a public library.

Missouri judge rules officials can't tell voters photo ID required to cast ballot

A Missouri judge on Tuesday ruled that state election officials can no longer spread materials that indicate voters must provide a photo ID in order to cast a ballot, Reuters reported.

The news outlet reported that Judge Richard Callahan, who sits on the Cole County Circuit Court, ruled that the materials must also specify other forms of identifications that voters can show. He additionally wrote that state authorities can't require people who are otherwise qualified to vote to sign a sworn statement.

Hill.TV poll finds Dems hold 30-point lead over GOP among millennials

Democrats beat Republicans by 27 points among millennials on the generic ballot, according to a new American Barometer survey.

The poll, conducted by Hill.TV and the HarrisX polling company found that 53 percent of 18-34 year-olds said they would support a Democratic candidate in November's midterm elections, while 26 percent said they would support a Republican candidate in their district.

Voting Rights Become A Flashpoint In Georgia Governor’s Race

Marsha Appling-Nunez was showing the college students she teaches how to check online if they’re registered to vote when she made a troubling discovery. Despite being an active Georgia voter who had cast ballots in recent elections, she was no longer registered.

“I was kind of shocked,” said Appling-Nunez, who moved from one Atlanta suburb to another in May and believed she had successfully changed her address on the voter rolls.

Federal Judge Upholds Ohio’s Voter Purge Again

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A federal judge rejected a voting rights group’s latest arguments Wednesday that voters were illegally purged from Ohio’s voting rolls.

U.S. District Judge George C. Smith largely sided with the state’s arguments defending confirmation notices sent to voters that set off a removal process tied to failure to participate in the election process, in another blow to the A. Phillip Randolph Institute.

appointed by Reagan, i.e. traitor I guess

just so everybody knows there is NO reason to purge voting rolls, legally, just like there is NO reason to require people have physical addresses to vote

unless you are in Russia

BASIC reading of our constitution and voting rights makes this clear, ANY other interpretation is activism

A Month Before Election Day, Democrats Poised for Legislative Gains

The last time we handicapped the state legislatures in May, the Democrats were in a good position to gain ground this fall. Five months later, their chances look even better.

Since then, Democrats' chances of gaining the majority have improved in nine chambers, compared to just one for the Republicans. Republicans currently have 11 chambers at risk of flipping party control, compared to just four for the Democrats.

Larry Sabato: "Red Wave Ain't Going To Happen, It's Just A Question About How Big The Blue Wave Is"

University of Virginia Center for Politics Director Larry Sabato joins MSNBC's 'MTP Daily' with host Chuck Todd to discuss the Republicans struggling in states Trump won in 2016.

Sabato said Trump is in trouble in the Midwest, a part of the country where he did well in 2016, and it "seems to be flipping" in the midterm year. He said the states he carried, it appears, to elect Democratic Senators.
