And it's not only them.

The NHL is political, whether you like it or not

In the immediate aftermath of raising his fist, Lightning forward J.T. Brown received death threats.

Yeah, I think all sports are political. For some reason, the NFL gets all the focus. But it's NBA players we send to North Korea.

Obviously, most of the leagues have managers, and they have workers/employees often with a union - called players - a political situation that exists elsewhere throughout the economy.

Players have constantly throughout a long history made political messages on the field. Take Muhammad Ali. Or the Miami Heat saying "We are Trayvon Martin." Often at the Olympics because they can get the entire world's attention. The Olympics is often very political, especially over who gets to send athletes, eh, Russia?

There's a long history of racial barriers and segregation in sports - a long political battle. Not finished, either. Then we have female participation in sports, and should women athletes deserve equality, or at least parity, hence Title IX.

We could go on. Only fools say people are politicizing sports, just suddenly, or just now. Sports have always been that way.

Yes, Gladiators squaring off in their arenas have always been used by the Emperors to further their rule.

I wish they still had lions. And those pigs with razor sharp tusks.

I don't know if I would call all our non-contact sports gladiatorial.

Curling, for example.

I understand in that sport, they start young.

Better keep Roy Moore from the competitions.

Then there's baseball.

OK. Maybe not the best example. :D
