Happy Thanksgiving!

Post by gounion »

Well, when I woke up this morning, I was still feeling political (I’m in Vegas on late time). Now, not so much. Having the holiday with my wife’s two uncles and family I’ve never met. Having a good time! Hope everyone else is, we’ll return to the debates tomorrow! Or at least I will. Feeling peaceable today.

Happy Thanksgiving GoU.

I'm watching a replay of the parade, as shot by a single camera, lots of whip pans, right in front of the NY Historical Society at 77th & CPW. Last time Covid permitted, I was right there with my extreme coffee from the espresso joint nearby, watching them inflate the balloons. Now I'm stuck here in LA with a migraine induced by the inevitable Santa Ana wind that passes for late November weather in the era of climate change.

Turkey and fun later.

The power stayed on. If you'd heard our house shaking in the 7% humidity 80 degree F downslope wind blasts in the dead of night, you'd be as amazed as I am. Farther up in the hills, they turned the power off on purpose. Ahh, the joy of November in SoCal.

Happy Thanksgiving, all!

Glad you folks are all able to celebrate the holiday where we commemorate that winter where the pilgrims helped out and fed the starving natives.
;) Happy Thanksgiving and holiday season to each and every one of you.
As for us the Thanksgiving deal started Wednesday and ends Saturday as my kids and grandchildren are spread out.

Okay, Thanksgiving is over. Anyone have any horror stories about sharing Thanksgiving with their crazy uncle or obnoxious brother-in-law? I get a kick out of reading in the new about how to deal with these types of family members but I've never experienced it.

It's not that folks are humorless, it's that you are NOT funny.

I am surprised nobody here started a thread about this. I am even more surprised that the president wasn't advised of the political fallout

But I am not surprised he didn't have Thanksgiving at the WH or Camp David for his children and grandchildren

Not exactly the history of Thanksgiving, just White Christian Version.

I'm a huge fan of good humor. Love it.

Dennis Miller thinks he's often funny, and does not get why he isn't. It's a related problem.

I always thought the Native Americans kept the settlers from starving by showing them what would grow on this side of the pond. Hardly matters, though, since the First Thanksgiving is a made up story. The real thing was in October. It was a harvest festival, as is traditional in a lot of cultures.

The November holiday was proclaimed by Lincoln, a Republican, to give thanks for the end of the Civil War, not nature's bounty. It became more about the bounty of shopping. FDR, a Democrat, moved it a week earlier as an economic stimulus, to make Black Friday earlier and entice people to shop longer before Christmas, as a Depression era economic measure. Even Congress thought that was a bit much, and they moved it back to where it is now. It does seem still to be the day before Black Friday for a lot of people, though. Gives you some idea of what they're really giving thanks for.

Point being that the holiday has been part of presidential politics from the first one on.
