First we have the dead horses at Santa Anita. Going into the Kentucky Derby, the count stood at 23.

In the Derby, the first place horse was disqualified for blocking another one, and a 65-1 shot ended up the winner.

In the runup to the Preakness, they had a Miss Preakness for fillies. At the end of the race, one horse dropped dead. Just like that. Fell down and stopped moving, right on NBC. Cardiac arrest, apparently.

At more or less the same time, horse #24 died at Santa Anita.

The real Preakness started minus the first 4 horses from the Derby, who had all dropped out for various reasons. So much for a Triple Crown. In said real Preakness, someone messed up the start. It's hard to see, but whoever was at that slot in the gate supervising the horse and jockey didn't let go soon enough when the gate opened. The horse threw the jockey (Velasquez), who fell to the track and got up fairly quickly. He says he's fine. The horse ran the whole race without a jockey. He knew what to do. He ran all the way around. In fact, they had so much trouble catching him that he might have gone around the track twice.

One waits with bated breath to see what the next disaster will be for horse racing.

I read an article about that at CNN. A gloss over the size of the Titanic was apparent after reading just a few sentences. They have horse death statistics without truth in statistics. They say:

"Many have pointed to Southern California's wettest winter in almost a decade, saying the rain has made the dirt track where most of the deaths occurred too soft."

And:

Deaths happen, no matter where horse racing events are staged. From 2009 to 2018, there were 6,134 horse deaths in 3.4 million starts nationwide, according to a tally kept by The Jockey Club, an organization focusing on the integrity, health and safety of horse racing.

:|

What they are not saying is those horses for the most part are being killed for having sustained an injury which rendered them worthless for the racing world. Cutting costs while saying what they are doing is oh so humane.

:|

I'd hate to be their grandpa.

The track was checked, and checked again. No horses ran on it for a couple of weeks. They banned medication on race day, and whip rides in the stretch. The problem stopped briefly, but then started again.

Indeed, a surprising number of race horses die in the normal situation. The argument for euthanasia is that they'd die anyway from circulation issues or whatever. I don't know whether this is true.

Shit, this sucks.

My father owned race horses and went to OTB 6 days a week for 40 years.

I of course was hooked also. Why are these horses dying?

Gambling habits, they're very destructive habits.

Destroyer of the person and all which touches their habit. Not just horses, wipes out the lives of gambling sport athletes as well.
