Brilliant.

New Year's began in the traditional way here. Up late, get the LA Times, usual screaming headlines. Today's grim covid numbers (always highest ever). Today's environmental catastrophe (old pipes; raw sewage; beach). Today's crime stats (up; up; up). Today's dead celebrities (beloved; famous; tragic).

Being January first, time for this year's Rose Parade, a tradition that never dies. Sunny as always, sunniest day in a month. Bands from Ohio, where we are assured it's not as warm. Floats. This one wins the Royal Trophy for corporations grossing between 1-2 billion a year.

This year's unenforceable laws. Throw your food waste in with the grass clippings. The big one is that apparently single family residences are dead in California. And one more reason not to abandon ship and move to a real city bites the dust, presumably though after the routine years of court fights. More of everything, fewer good ideas. Business is as usual in the sodden Gloden State.

Everyone's talking about the Andy/Andy show on CNN. Apparently it was the hit of the year. I watched about 10 minutes. Mostly I noticed how they were drowning it all, or at least acting as if they were. They kept knocking back shots of something reputed to be Tequila. Not a bad idea, actually, after that year. Probably why it was so popular. It made me chuckle, then the ball dropped, and here we're still going over footage trying to establish if the light in it really did fail halfway down the drop. I still say it did. (It came on 5 minutes later, but still, perfect last gasp of wretched 2021.) Have a better year, all!!!!!!!!!!

I gave up on New Years Eve shows decades ago. They're hosted by a couple of B- or C-listers trying to fill air time between commercials until the big ball drops. Why people brave the cold weather in Times Square for 10-seconds of action is beyond me.

Like I said, I watched about 10 minutes. Andy/Andy were good schtick in the context of Times Square and all the lights and hype going on, and the millions of dollars that could go to covid emergency measures but went to put on a TV show designed to separate the people from even more of their money for the sponsors' products.

It did look pretty chilly in NYC. Not much wind, though. That is what really does it to you when it gets between buildings and blasts you out. Later on it rained, and once the lighting crew finished swarming all over the stages, everyone got the fk out of there. The bare superstructure was still there this morning, sodden and sad.

Times Square, as I keep saying, is a total pain in the ass, but I still like it. It's a good place to take street photos. People are all clicking away at the flashing lights and the tall buildings, and they don't notice me clicking away at them with considerably more formidable equipment and training in its use. Ditto Rockefeller Center. Midtown has its moments.

I don't think anyone rushed the gate this year. The 15,000 people with tickets seemed meek and docile in their police-guarded cow pens, all in their identical hats with the sponsor's name on them, and apparently nothing whatsoever to eat or drink allowed. Somehow whoever else was in midtown was kept at bay. Maybe no one else was out. NYC gets hit pretty hard in these covid surges. The bars they showed on CNN's celebration of alcohol looked unusually empty.

LA was certainly quieter than most years. It sounded like a war for about 15 minutes instead of an hour before and after midnight like usual. Maybe covid is starting to take its toll.

Watched today on ABC the video of "Journey" playing with whoever the singer is they have.

Sounded very good. I am a fan of a few of Steve Perry's songs but mostly the pre Steve Perry Journey which sounded NOTHING like the latter.

Your braver than I am, I could never sit down and watch I love Lucy, or various incarnations.

One thing I like about watching old episodes of the show ... think you can still find it on the "classics" channels etc. ... just to show you where TV was in the 1950s.

Lucy and Ricky slept in separate beds. So did Fred and Ethel. I mean, they were married (and in IRL as well as on the show). But they wouldn't show that at the time. So funny.

I liked the Being The Ricardos movie. It’s getting panned so i didn’t have great expectations, but I enjoyed it,

The casting isn’t great though. At no point did Nicole Kidman or Javier Bardem really convince me they were Lucille Ball or Desi Arnaz. Nicole Kidman sort of had the voice down, I dunno. There’s certain icons that can’t be replicated.

I've watched old episodes of Texico Star Theater and the Charles Bronson series, Man WIth A Camera. There is the old Drag Net and San Francisco Beat. Great shows, though some the acting was hamhanded at first.

I Love Lucy with its 1950s TV production values still stands up with the best stuff TV ever did. Lucille Ball's performances are as silly-funny as ever. VitaMeataVegaMin and the chocolate balls and the wine grapes will stay in the pantheon for the foreseeable future.

Of course the 50s production value is part of the fun. Yes, married people sleeping in separate beds were part of the old Hays/Breen content code as adapted to TV. Difference being that in the movies they were unofficially allowed to throw in little cues so we knew that the leads still cranked one off before falling asleep. On 1950s TV, nice folks just didn't do that. All those cute kids were brought by the stork, I guess.

Without Desilu Productions, there likely wouldn’t be a Star Tek. Or Twilight Zone.

Well, DesiLu had more or less become merged with Paramount by then, I think, but still yes, it was a big time player in TV until fairly recently. Those are obviously immortal shows.

Lucy and Ricky were one of the original TV franchises that came over from radio. The other one they still run on cable channels is Ozzie and Harriet. Both married couples in real life. The 1950s were like that. But the shows are true classics.

Both are now shown without the parts where the actors went out of character and over to the other corner of the set to hawk the title sponsors' snake oil. Even with the stagey 1950s b/w 2000-footcandle 525-line flat-light one-take heavy-makeup production values, they're immortal. They deserve to be. They somehow managed to create top notch comedy on one of the more intractable media ever invented.

I mentioned to you earlier about Phil Silvers insisting on a Black cast member, the first I guess.

Then I read that Desi wasnt the first to do 3 cameras, but I guess he utilized it more than anyone else had at that time. And they make a point in the movie that it made it easier for the studio audience to see the show, not sure exactly how unless by moving them way off to the side?

I don't know who invented 3-camera live TV. DesiLu is certainly known for it. Directorially, it was a good way to cover a scene where you couldn't edit it together later. It also adds a certain amount of life to the product.

I like to watch a couple of old TV programs devoted to rerunning old shows from the 50, 60, and 70s. Not because it brings back memories of when I watched them back then but I like to see the actors who later became well-known as well as seeing a lot of lesser known character actors you always see but didn't know who they were. I was watching Maverick yesterday and in addition to watching the lead star, James Garner, I notice others like Adam West and Troy Donahue.

The SciFi Channel had a Twilight Zone marathon over the weekend and in one episode you could easily identify a young Burt Reynolds, along with Jack Weston, Howard McNear (Floyd the barber from The Andy Griffith Show, and long-time character actor John McGiver.
