Snowstorm unleashes blizzard conditions across Plains, Midwest

A powerful storm has begun to unleash heavy snow and blizzard conditions across the north-central United States, prompting severe weather warnings, school closures and major road closures.

Meteorologists say the storm could dump between 6-12 inches from central Nebraska to northeastern Minnesota, according to the National Weather Service, which added that, in heavier bands, snow could fall at rates of 1-2 inches per hour.

LA had another one of those warnings for "life-threatening" weather yesterday. We were promised 50 MPH wind, torrential downpours, and massive floods.

Once again, it rained for about 5 minutes, and there was one (1) one thunderclap. No wind. Cool rainbow though.

We weren't so lucky. Woke up to almost a foot of heavy wet snow. Finally put the snow blower to use for the first time. Winter is finally here!

That this much snow coming so late isn't a new one on us. The odd thing was winter being like one long drawn out fall. Besides a bit of a cold snap at the very beginning we missed winter this year. 40 years working outdoors and i've never experienced anything like it. At this age i gotta admit it was nice but i worry what the warming trend will bring this summer.

those pine needles protected the moisture...they held it in so the roots and the tree were always getting sufficient root moisture.
cut down those trees and lose the carpet.

i cant recall when i last saw...a pine needle. the few struggling now dying pinions shed a few needles but theyre way dead.
the ground is just dirt now. no protection just dirt.
Before this snowfall we had been in red alert for fires. It's been dryer than a popcorn fart all winter long here.

The disappearance of pine trees is disturbing, and it is real.

Logging hasn't helped. They still clearcut, they just don't do a whole forest at once. They do it in sections. No one objects to thinning the forest, it provides more light for trees that remain, and of course fire has a role in a healthy forest if it takes out underbrush and doesn't get so hot that it crowns and takes everything.

The problem was and is greed.

Pollution too. As my cities arborist explained to me, conifer trees are more sensitive to pollution. That's why my pine tree's were thinning out and losing branches. And the beautiful blue spruce trees that are now gone were planted wrong. Apparently they grow along river bottoms and lakes. i didn't have either in my yard. Without that water they can't make it past 20-30 years.

Ya notice it around this area. The pines are looking really thin and stressed.

We had the high winds but not much rain. Next weekend, we're supposed to get a "big" storm but I'll waiting until Thursday or Friday to worry about it.

The Worst Climate Disaster You Haven’t Heard Of Just Got More Deadly
When Mongolia’s extreme weather killed 700,000 livestock in 2018, it was a record. This year, that number is 5.2 million — and could soon quadruple.

In Mongolia, where nearly a third of the population still lives as nomadic herders, a winter so cold that livestock either freeze to death or starve as snow and ice make grazing impossible is called a “dzud.” These extreme seasons used to come once a decade. With climate change destabilizing the landlocked Asian country’s weather pattern, the dzud has haunted Mongolia for six of the last 10 years.

In 2018, when a dzud wiped out roughly 700,000 livestock, it was a devastating record. Last month, the death toll for this winter eclipsed 2 million, as HuffPost reported at the time. Weeks later, that figure has nearly tripled.

As of this week, at least 5.2 million animals have died since winter began, a particularly brutal event that combined the effects of two different types of dzud.

This is still just the start of the catastrophe, as the die-off is expected to reach its peak sometime in early May. The final death toll could reach 20 million, the United Nations told HuffPost on Tuesday.

It’s the worst winter in at least 50 years, according to the

You see the effects everywhere. Everything's changing. There's no argument any more, just denial. Denial is abroad in the land, as we see every day on this board.

The climate in LA, supposedly a place where there is no climate, has changed profoundly. All the changes are bad. I just spent money on an air purifier, doctor's advice on that one, and it does seem to be helping the headaches I was waking up with every morning for the past two years. I never used to get these. Now I do. The only change is that climate related allergies in LA have gone absolutely vertical in the past few years when the changes in the weather became more pronounced.

What are we doing about it? Launching hundreds of thousands of more satellites and filling the low Earth orbital zone with megatons of space junk so 15 year old hormone cases can talk about boys on their cell phones between classes. And you can't sit with them either.

Also filling the lower atmosphere with gases that cause profound changes in temperatures. They're long term changes, and don't have an equally profound effect on whether or not it rains... not yet anyway. Therefore, who cares?

Other parts of the world aren't as lucky, but don't worry, soon the guy who bankrupt a casino will be our president again, and he'll see to it that all those millions of people fleeing the global collapse of law and order will get shot at the border.

All absolute denial. The barbarians won't storm Rome. There's an army for that. No problem, keep killing slaves and having orgies.
