Happy winter solstice! At last, we've made it to 'The Shortest Day'
Author Susan Cooper knows what it is to be scared of the dark. As a child growing up in England during World War II, she remembers long, dark nights, with Nazi bombers flying overhead.
"We would be sitting in a raid shelter underneath the back lawn with Mum reading books to us by the light of a candle," she recalls. "When the bombs came closer, the candle would shake."
Now, nearly a lifetime later, Cooper's book The Shortest Day, is a celebration of light gradually returning after the winter solstice. Saturday, Dec. 21, is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
"I've spent my life writing about the light and the dark," Cooper says. And this latest book is "a family celebration of the light coming back after the dark threatens to take over the world."....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiwPEGPWbFQ...Cooper says she hopes the book helps communicate a universal and timeless message of hope and peace.
Working on the book helped Ellis see beyond specific religious traditions associated with winter holidays. "It's more universal ... " she says. "It really is just kind of light triumphing over darkness. And once that year switches and those days begin to lengthen, it's a new year — and light is always a cause to celebrate."

Re: Happy Holidays
Right, no way shepherds would have been "abiding in the fields" in winter, even in the Middle East. All these holidays are around the solstice for a reason. Even if it's true that the early Christians chose to have their holiday during the pagan Saturnalia in order to have a cover story, the fact remains that the solstice was already being celebrated. It's pretty universal.

Now for a little Holiday humor. A woman in Kentucky put up a “Cousin Eddie” display from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and someone called the police because there was a man standing in the yard exposing himself.
A “Cousin Eddie” display in Kentucky apparently looked a little too real and police were called to check it out.
After receiving the call, a dispatcher described the scene to responding officers as “a male standing outside. He is naked. He has a robe covering part of his body. He is exposing himself, and he has a hose between his legs.”
Officers arrived at the Shepherdsville home to find a mannequin in the yard that looked like Cousin Eddie from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” It was decorated with a robe, a hat, a cigar and a beer and was holding what appeared to be an orange hose, WDRB-TV reported.
Homeowner Joni Keeney said she decided to put up the display from her favorite Christmas movie to have some fun.
“Everybody has a ‘Cousin Eddie,’ in their family, everybody,” Keeney said. “I just want people to have a good Christmas and get a laugh,” Keeney said.
Responding officers did get a laugh and took some photos of the display, WDRB reported.
“Never a dull moment,” Shepherdsville Police Chief Rick McCubbin said.

Hope everyone has a good holiday. Not planning on leaving until Monday when it warms up some.
As per my tradition, I won’t be on the board tomorrow, well, at least for politics. I figure one day a year we don’t have to argue.
Everyone take care.
