I did several years ago. But with the way things are in this world I regret doing it now. And honestly, it didn’t show me a significant amount that I didn’t sort of already know through researched genealogy. I was hoping maybe there’d be some surprises. I mean at the time I thought it was cool. I’m just worried about m privacy now.

My brother did it about 10 years ago. The results confirmed what we already knew about where our ancestors came from. One of my aunts did a family tree and it showed we came from Germany, England, France, and Denmark. The DNA results confirmed her findings.

the privacy..yah.

i didnt like the privacy loss feeling back in W98. neighbor was doing two week trial deals with ancestry
but i wouldnt even give a card number back then.
i realized quickly that ancestry had limited info on my family, and that what I typed in become more info
for them. which sure yah is fine i guess to an extent but thats the key: whos extent.

i never trusted the lil punk tek boys. im sure peoples are having tons of fun and all but it wasnt my thing.
and gee its still not...

I thought that the DNA thing would finally confirm that my mother's side came over on the Mayflower. Literally.

However I learned too much about information technology to trust anybody with my DNA, let alone my family history. It's always been insecure. Most of the info security looks real good in theory, but in the real world a lot of it comes down to "Don't do that," which in practice usually comes down to "Don't get caught." I never sent it in.

Friend of a friend who's in the IATSE camera union did the DNA thing and found out he was Native American. His family had always thought they were Hispanic. He sent his info to the tribe and got his ID card, and eventually moved to the rez in NM. I guess there's work for cinematographers there too.

It turns out that DNA data that was supposed to be private... isn't.

Yes, they might have caught a murderer this way, but it reveals that the database is not off limits to law enforcement. Maybe DOGE gets to see it too, who knows?

Most of Musk's people have far less sophisticated modes for removing anyone not suited for business employment from the population. You just decommission them and leave them to seek menial employment for starvation wages. This was once known as The American Way the last time we allowed robber barons to run the country.
