Re: The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
From the title I thought it was a line from Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence song.
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence"

Re: The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
Its a country song
Ringo Starr - Look Up
Its a long way down and there's no bottom
You had the blues but you forgot em
Look up in the midnight hour look up
Love is the higher power
Keep your eyes on the skies
Don't look down in a shadow town look up
Like every storm the rain wont last
The future never comes and the past has passed
Look up roll away the stone
Look up when your all alone
Up above where the music plays
Theres a light that shines in the darkest days
Theres a burning fire piercing through the haze
Look up Look up
No matter where you place in the human race
There is mercy there is grace
Look up over the clouds Look up
Over the crowds up above your head where the music plays
Theres a light that shines in the darkest days
Theres a burning fire leading through the haze
Look up Look up
Live to fight another day good things are gonna come your way
Live to fight another day good things are gonna come your way

That works too. I always liked S&G's NYC references.
So many great bands came from Queens.
No great bands came from Pacific Palisades, though several of them bought houses there after they made it. The house where the Doors wrote LA Woman burned in the fire.
See your hair is burning
Hills are filled with fire
If I said I didn't love you
You know I'd be a liar
-- words of the prophets indeed --
----------------------------------------------------
There once was a union maid
She never was afraid
Of the goons and the ginks and the company finks
And the deputy sheriffs who made the raids
She went to the union hall
When a meeting it was called
And when the company boys came around she always held her ground
Oh, you don't scare me, I'm sticking to the union
I'm sticking to the union
I'm sticking to the union
Oh, you don't scare me, I'm sticking to the union
I'm sticking to the union
Till the day I die.

TURN! TURN! TURN!
Yeah, heard that song once and I had to have an electric guitar. Got pretty good at it, though voice wise I'm a total loser. Best that I stuck to movies. Actually in movie school they let me take electronic music, and then I could use the sound studio, and I mixed most of my own music tracks there. Then you'd transfer it to magnetic film (I know... I know... different world then before SMPTE time code) and into your final sound mix with picture it would go.
The words of course are pretty much straight out of the Bible, book of Ecclesiastes I believe, though that peace thing at the end is a change, and a good one especially for the time. Not too bad for now either.

All good things got to come to an end
The thrills have to fade
Before they come 'round again
The bills will be paid
And the pleasure will mend
All good things got to come to an end
God I wish I was home
Laying 'round with my friends
The call of the wild
Caution thrown to the wind
The fall of the child
Where the longing begins
All good things got to come to an end
Like a river flows
Rolling 'til it ends in the sea
Our pleasure grows
Rolling 'til it ends in you and me
Now as the dark gathers into the sky
And legions of might go thundering by
Regions of light grow dim and then die
And we with our wings
Wait for morning to fly
Like a river flows
Rolling 'til it ends in the sea
Our pleasure grows
Rolling 'til it ends in you and me
Here where the angels
Have appeared and are gone
Your face like an ember
Glows in the dawn
But I want you to remember
All wild deeds live on
All good times, all good friends
All good things got to come to an end

Some of them were dreamers
And some of them were fools
Who were making plans and thinking of the future
With the energy of the innocent
They were gathering the tools
They would need to make their journey back to nature
While the sand slipped through the opening
And their hands reached for the golden ring
With their hearts they turned to each other's hearts for refuge
In the troubled years that came before the deluge
Some of them knew pleasure
Some of them knew pain
And for some of them it was only the moment that mattered
And on the brave and crazy wings of youth
They went flying around in the rain
And their feathers once so fine grew torn and tattered
And in the end they traded their tired wings
For the resignation that living brings
And exchanged love's bright and fragile glow for the glitter and the rouge
And in a moment they were swept before the deluge
Now let the music keep our spirits high
And let the buildings keep our children dry
Let creation reveal its secrets by and by, by and by
When the light that's lost within us reaches the sky
Some of them were angry
At the way the earth was abused
By the men who learned how to forge her beauty into power
And they struggled to protect her from them
Only to be confused
By the magnitude of her fury in the final hour
And when the sand was gone and the time arrived
In the naked dawn only a few survived
And in attempts to understand a thing so simple and so huge
Believed that they were meant to live after the deluge
[Chorus]
Now let the music keep our spirits high
Let the buildings keep our children dry
Let creation reveal its secrets by and by, by and by

Oh sure, the refugee thing was about one of his lady friends who was also a victim of bad relationships, familial and otherwise.
Right now we need marching songs.
(tune of Battle Hymn of the Republic aka Glory Glory Hallelujah)
1. When the union's inspiration through the workers' blood will run
There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun
For what force on Earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one?
But the union makes us strong.
Ch: Solidarity forever, solidarity forever, solidarity forever
For the union makes us strong.
2. They have taken untold millions that they never toiled to earn
But without our brains and muscle not a single wheel can turn
We can break their haughty power, gain our freedom when we learn
That the union makes us strong.
-- etc -- there are a lot of verses. Solidarity songs tend to grow like weeds. And of course you can substitute "people" for "union." Remember the first three words of the US Constitution. That was their struggle, this is our struggle.

Long ago in days untold
Were ruled by lords of greed
Maidens fair, with gold they dared
To bare their wombs that bleed
Kings And Queens and guillotines
Taking lives denied
Starch and parchments laid the laws
When bishops took the ride
Only to decieve
Oh I know I
Lived this life before
Somehow I know now
Truths I must be sure
Tossin' turnin', nightmares burnin'
Dreams of swords in hand
Sailing ships, the viking spits
The blood of father's land
Only to decieve
Living times of knights and mares
Raising swords for maidens fair
Sneer at death, fear only loss of pride
Living other centuries
Deja vu or what you please
Follows true to all who do or die
Screams of no reply
They died
Screams of no reply
And died
Lordy, Lordy, they died
Live and do or die

Re: The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
The refugee thing resonates with me because first the middle class was priced out of Pacific Palisades, and then a generation later the stupid rich kids did fireworks on New Year's Eve in the most dangerous fire zone perhaps on the entire planet at that time, following a climate cycle that guaranteed the worst danger in many decades.
Oh, OK, it took a week for their fire to re-ignite and take out the whole town in a few hours' time, but still, the evidence is there and professional fire fighters say yes an ember can stay hot that long if it's covered up, and yes the 100 MPH gusts coming over the hill would be enough to start another fire. Congratulations, kids, you very likely burned down the whole Palisades and half of Malibu.
And a week later we found out that Elon Musk was our new president.
"May you live in interesting times" is a Chinese curse for a reason.

Re: The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
Seem to be making a run at the lower upper class and calling them the middle class while robbing the poor. Use to be a middle class to go after but that was before the bi partisanship posed for the exact opposite reasons they said it was for. The lower upperclass has homes and money in the bank and retirement employment, prosperity that has mostly been undisturbed also some things to lose and gain unlike the people that get the most of the finger wagging directed at them.
We see the federal workers now experiencing the uncertainty that has been going around for others for the past several generations and with it protests. But you gotta figure its inherent when a handfull of people have as much wealth concentrated as half the country and for that handfull of people to become increasingly more and more and more unhinged and controlling and violent and feeling more entitled to everything and to feel slighted and cheated and robbed of all they can see accruing and even things that have yet to be realized.
Well started out on a dirty road I started out all alone
And the sun went down as I crossed the hill
And the town lit up and the world got still
Im learning to fly but I aint got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing
Now the good old days may not return
And the rocks might melt and the sea might burn
Im learning to fly but I aint got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing
Now some say life will beat you down
Break your heart steal your crown
So I started out for god knows where
I guess I'll know when I get there
Im learning to fly around the clouds
What goes up must come down
Im learning to fly but I aint got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing

Re: The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
You are spot-on in your analysis, as usual. The problem's been a long time coming, so it'll undoubtedly be a long time going.
When the middle class was still just that, and was first priced out of the Palisades, there still was one. Middle class, that is. There is now no Palisades either, but we're talking about 30 years ago. Presumably it'll be rebuilt as a lower upper class enclave, since that's who can afford new houses now.
It started out as a big city problem. Now, following the final triumph of the rich, it's everyone's problem. The reason the problem is so galling for me is just that. It's a very old problem in SoCal, but as long as the rest of the country outside the big cities wasn't as bad off, it stayed under the radar.
I've been fighting this one for most of my life. I've bashed my head against a brick wall for so long that I don't feel it any more. The scar tissue has made me 2 inches taller.
I wrote a punk rock tune once... cut a demo of sorts... never shopped it around, punk died about then.
Walkin' through Hollywood, whaddya see
Looks more like Guatemala to me
Black limousines but no place to pee
No middle class
No middle class
Lady used to work in the factory
Had a Jacuzzi and a big TV
Now she's in the street giving people VD
No middle class
No middle class

Teacher had three kids and a wife
Went to school for most of his life
Now he's on Sunset, blood on the knife
No middle class
No middle class
No middle class
etc

Turns out that Woody Guthrie wrote a song about The Donald's father Fred Trump, a racist real estate baron with possible klan leanings who saw to it that his developments had white-only covenants. Guthrie's family still owns the copyright.
Tune of "I ain't got no home"
Beach Haven ain’t my home!
I just can’t pay this rent!
My money’s down the drain!
And my soul is badly bent!
Beach Haven looks like heaven
Where no black ones come to roam!
No, no, no! Old Man Trump!
Old Beach Haven ain’t my home!
Tune of "I ain't got no home"
Beach Haven ain’t my home!
I just can’t pay this rent!
My money’s down the drain!
And my soul is badly bent!
Beach Haven looks like heaven
Where no black ones come to roam!
No, no, no! Old Man Trump!
Old Beach Haven ain’t my home!

Watching LA "news" again? Did you catch the one where the perp stole a tow truck and took the cops on a ride through half the city?
These, of course, are LA's version of bread and circuses, at least between fires, floods, and earthquakes.

A Song for Gaza: The Ballad of Rivka and Mohammed
I was watching the news from Gaza
And I fell asleep on my chair
And when I awoke from my slumber
A young girl was standing there.
She said, My name is Rivka
They killed me because I’m a Jew
I died in the ghetto of Vilna
In nineteen forty two.
The ghetto was like a prison
They wouldn’t allow us to leave
Some said they were going to kill us all
We didn’t know what to believe.
That day I wore my new red dress
My bubbe had made for me
And in that crowded ghetto
It made me feel proud and free.
I looked up at the soldier
I looked him in the eye
I forgot to bow my head down
And so I had to die.
He smashed my head with his rifle
Because I was too bold
I was killed in the Vilna ghetto
When I was seven years old.
And then out of the darkness
A young boy’s gaze met mine
He said, My name is Mohammed
My country is Palestine.
I’ve lived all my life in Gaza
And the only time I feel free
Is when I go down to the harbour
And feel the wind from the sea.
That day I went with my cousins
We ran down to the beach to play
Then the soldier fired a shell at me
And blew my life away.
They want to crush our spirits
They want us to be afraid
Locked up in the prison of Gaza
The prison that they have made.
To them our lives don’t matter
They force us to live in a cage
I was killed on the beach in Gaza
At eleven years of age.
They don’t think that we deserve freedom
Or belong to the human race.
Mohammed, my brother, said Rivka,
This world is a cold, cold place.
Mohammed, my friend, my brother,
Let us leave this world of war.
Then each took the hand of the other
And then they were seen no more.
But I saw spokesmen and politicians
Lining up to speechify
And every word was a hypocrite
And every word was a lie.
I saw children still being slaughtered
The monster must have its fill
While the people with power sat on their hands
And supplied the weapons that kill.
I weep for the people of Gaza
And they are weeping still
And I curse the ones who did nothing
And enable the monster to kill.

Green Day - Good Riddance (Time of your life) Munich
Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time
[Chorus]
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
[Verse 2]
So take the photographs and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while
[Chorus]
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life

Re: The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
This punk tune is more relevant than ever. Maybe the pogo is the true dance of our time.
Green Day, 2004
Don't wanna be an American idiot
One nation controlled by the media
Information age of hysteria
It's calling out to idiot America
Welcome to a new kind of tension
All across the alien nation
Where everything isn't meant to be okay
In television dreams of tomorrow
We're not the ones who're meant to follow
For that's enough to argue
