On the other side of the Rockies, everything's gone to shit. They don't have the resources to fix everything that the weather broke in any kind of timely manner. Power, data, all that stuff. A society governed by the flow of electrons and photons.
Since the whole world is now interconnected, the whole world gets to share in the consequences. AI has made the problem worse, because it has increased class tensions while at the same time making everything harder for ordinary people. I spent all day yesterday fighting with various automated information systems which can't fix things that humans used to fix with one phone call.

It doesn't suck any worse than the era before, when wealth was based on who could start wars and grant huge contracts to their buddies who made weapons and "delivery systems." In LA you drove past where Dow Chemical Company made the napalm, and where Rand Corporation did the DoD contract research on where nuke strikes would kill the most people in the least time. Half the fathers on the street where I grew up couldn't talk about what they did at work, because it would have violated their lifetime secrecy oaths.
