The San Diego Padres are on the verge of being sold for a record price of $3.9 billion to Jose E. Feliciano, co-owner of Chelsea Football Club, and his wife, Kwanza Jones, a source confirmed to ESPN on Friday.
The sale price easily tops the previous record of $2.4 billion for an MLB franchise, set by Steve Cohen when he purchased the New York Mets in 2020. Before being finalized, the sale must be approved by 75% of Major League Baseball's owners, with the next owners meetings scheduled for June.
Feliciano, 53, is co-founder and managing partner of Clearlake Capital, a private-equity firm based in Santa Monica, California. In 2022, Clearlake and Todd Boehly, part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, led a consortium that purchased Chelsea for $5.24 billion.

San Diego Padres sold of $3.9 billion
San Diego Padres sold of $3.9 billion
Living in the San Diego area, naturally I'm a Padre fan but I couldn't believe someone would pay $3.9 billion for the team. San Diego is a small market team and IMO, isn't worth anywhere near that amount. Perhaps $1.5 billion at the most. Listening to the local sports talk on the radio, they were saying the buyer, Jose E. Feliciano, co-owner of Chelsea Football Club, spends money on players in soccer so it would follow he'll spend money on players in baseball as well. Time will tell.

Re: San Diego Padres sold of $3.9 billion
My guess is that Jose Feliciano (no relation) doesn't know any more about sports than Guggenheim Partners, a New York investment house which owns the LA Dodgers. Sports owners are now investors like any others. They know a lot about capital. However, expecting them to know anything about sports is like expecting your real estate person to know what kind of driveway surface lasts the longest.

Re: San Diego Padres sold of $3.9 billion
That's because the term "millionaire" became obsolete, due to the inflation every president says they're going to control just before they make it worse. Let's just say that a paper megabuck ain't what it used to be. Just about anyone who has paid off their mortgage on a house in LA qualifies. Hell, dumb jocks get more than that in bonuses for signing with sports teams.
It was time to bump it up to "billionaire." That means something, at least this year. If inflation continues at its current rate, we'll have to change it again sooner than you think.
