Re: Hello
The payout is confusing to me. The article says you win $1 million a year for life but then says it will be paid as an annuity. So does that mean you get a portion of the prize each year or the $1 million?ap215 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 30, 2026 10:24 pm Lottery to Launch New Multi-State Game: Millionaire for Life

All things being equal, I'd take the lump sum, because a predetermined payout of a fixed amount of money in the future is always worth less than it is now, at least as long as the current oligarchy runs the economy and makes its profits off inflation.

He goes after someone every day. It's how he keeps the Nooz about him, distorting our perception of the real situation in this country. There will be some kind of scare every day while this clown is running it. The only thing that keeps us sane is to ignore it until something actually breaks for real, then to protest it.

New York officials to re-raise pride flag removed from LGBT monument
New York officials plan to re-raise a rainbow Pride flag at the Stonewall National Monument in Manhattan after the Trump Administration removed it in recent days from the site known for kickstarting the modern LGBT rights movement.
Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal, an openly gay Democrat, posted a video on X on Tuesday evening, showing where the flag was supposed to be and saying, “Our community is not going to stand by idly as the Trump Administration tries to erase our history.” Hoylman-Sigal said that he and other officials would reinstall the flag at the monument at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Very good. The Republicans have read all the right books, and they know all about the power of changing history. If we can't change them out of office, we can at least change history back to the way things really happened.

The people of Minneapolis-St. Paul are being honored with a John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for their response to the federal immigration enforcement operation this winter, the JFK Library Foundation announced Wednesday.

How much did this poorly conceived enforcement campaign cost US taxpayers? The damage done was incalculable, and it would have been one of the greatest presidential shit shows of all time had Trump not committed a greater one a month later by doing the only thing he was elected NOT to do, and starting another war in the Middle East.

New York’s pied-à-terre tax deal shows progressive politics can deliver
In a significant breakthrough for New York’s strained public finances, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has reached agreement with Governor Kathy Hochul on a new tax targeting ultra-luxury second homes owned by out-of-state residents. The measure, focused on properties valued above $5 million, is expected to raise around $500 million annually for the state.
The proposal – often described as a “pied-à-terre tax” – marks a rare moment of alignment between a democratic socialist mayor and a more cautious state executive. It also signals a shift in how policymakers are approaching inequality in one of the world’s most expensive cities.

That seems to be aimed at Billionaire's Row, and the other Manhattan condos/co-ops where billionaires and their kids crash when in NYC. These multi-megabuck apartments stand mostly empty while the city still has to provide services for them.
Therefore, I thank Mamdami for putting his policy where his mouth is. Glad someone does.

Hawaii Legislature passes first-in-nation bill targeting Citizens United ruling
HONOLULU (CN) — Invoking America’s Founding Fathers, the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom and the outsized influence of the sugar industry over island politics, Hawaii lawmakers on Friday passed a first-in-the-nation bill to strip corporations of the power to spend money in state elections.
The bill takes aim at the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission ruling, which allowed corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money in elections. Lawmakers, drawing from a legal theory developed by the Center for American Progress, argued that because states create corporations and grant them their powers, Hawaii could simply decline to grant corporations the power to spend in elections.

Tennessee man jailed over Charlie Kirk post wins $835,000 settlement
Tennessee officials will pay $835,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a man who was jailed for more than a month over a Facebook post he made about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
While many people across the U.S. lost their jobs over social media comments about Kirk’s death, Larry Bushart’s case stood out as a rare instance in which such online speech led to criminal prosecution. The 61-year-old retired police officer spent 37 days behind bars before authorities dropped the felony charge against him in October.

See, there's the difference. The LA city council spends months arguing over whether any money should go to move homeless camps off public sidewalks, and who should should pay to fix the streets and put out fires. (Hint: not the rich.)
Oil drilling in Santa Barbara is an issue... again. Bet you thought that one was a dead horse. I know I did. Trump is all for it, and one oil company has been permitted to start pumping oil again, despite many state and local ordinances banning same. It won't do much to help pay for his war, and the locals are organizing all manner of resistance.
Everything old is new again.
