Flashback From the Past

Post by Number6 »

I had an eye examine yesterday and got a new prescription for glasses. I was going to go to an eyeglass store to order a pair but since my eye were dilated I decided to wait until this morning when they'd be back to normal. I went to one of the national franchise stores and picked a style I liked. After going through the options like adding anti-glare, transitions, etc., it came time to pay.

Normally, when it comes to paying you slide or put your card into a reader and it will send the information over the internet. For this transaction, the clerk pulled out a credit card imprinter and form and did it manually. Back in the old days, the clerk would take your credit card and put it on an imprinter and then place a credit card form on top of it. Once everything was in place, the clerk would push a carriage over the card and form causing the raised letters on the credit card to be printed on the top of the form as well as on the carbon copies. I remarked that I hadn't seen one of those imprinters for decades. The clerk said their phone and internet had been out for two days so they had to process the credit card manually. It also meant they couldn't make the eyeglasses that day because their machine that makes the lens uses the internet so it will be a couple of days. That's no problem and I told her I would need them by next Saturday and she put a note on the order to expedite them when the internet is restored.

Like I said, I hadn't seen a credit card imprinter used in decades. I used to work a K-Mart in the very early 70s and that was the way we processed credit cards. I was surprised to see it still being used today. I guess their company had the foresight to plan for contingencies like their phone and internet are down. I doubt many born after 1985 have seen or used a credit card imprinter for their credit card buys.

In the early 70s we had to call an 800 number and get a 3 digit approval number.
It is how I got my first real job. I was 19 working at a home improvement center. Waiting on a customer who looked like he didn't have 2 nickels to rub together.
He whipped out a card from Morgo Lincoln Mercury, I figured he was the maintenance guy. I told him I was going to get a job selling cars when I was old enough. Turned out he owned the place and hired me on the spot.

How much were they? I find Costco to be considerable cheaper than most.
I sigh in your general direction.

We used to have to do that if it was over a certain amount. Also, before ringing up the sale when had to look up the card number in a book to see if it matched the list of stolen credit cards.

I normally get mine at Costco also but Costco usually takes a 10 - 14 days for bifocals and I’m leaving for Las Vegas next Monday and I wanted them before then. My new glasses should be ready by Saturday. Normally, they would have been ready by now but the store’s phone and internet were down. As for price, their about the same as Costco.

How are you travelling?

I sure wish Joe would sign EO and make it so only people with vax and negative test can get on a plane. I diont know if he needs an EO or not.

I also wish he would set up thousands of test sites immediately, force mfg to make a billion masks a month, etc. Utilize the defense production act and do it now and in a big way or this is gonna be super super bad. It already is. dammit

I’m driving by myself. I’m going to a bowling tournament at Southpoint Hotel and Casino. It’s away from The Strip just south of the airport. I feel comfortable going in that I’m fully vaccinated (three shots), masks required in the hotel, casino, and bowling center. I have N95 masks I’ll wear indoors and my team is also fully vaccinated. Oour team consists of six bowlers and we’ll bowl on one set of lanes, in masks, and not with another team. I don’t plan on going anywhere and I’m not planning on being around crowds so that means very little gambling. Overall, I don’t think the danger is any higher than here at home. BTW, I bowl at two different base bowling alleys with about 40 bowlers in one league and nearly 100 in another league where the bowlers are socially mixing with other bowlers.

Have fun!

Know the name Connor or Conner Ames? Friend of ours, I guess he is getting good, young pro, under 20 or something.

Las Vegas was serious about COVID when I was there in November. EVERYONE was masked. I'd feel as good there as anywhere.

No, haven't heard of him. There's a young teenage girl who bowled where I do and she could beat most adults. She's won a couple of Junior USBC tournaments as well as a major amateur National tournament. I've seen her practicing with her coach and from what I saw and with continued practice she has the skills to turn pro when she's 18 in a couple of years.

Thanks, like I said I'll be staying at a hotel/casino south of the airport and away from the rest of Las Vegas. I don't plan on hitting The Strip or the Fremont Experience or any of the other tourist areas. I'll be staying in the hotel/casino and bowling center from most of my stay.

Got right eye done Tuesday. It was working great yesterday but feels a little off today. I am hoping I didn't hit it in my sleep.

A lot of those items brought back memories of them. I still have:
CDs - My car has a 6-CD in-dash CD player, fully loaded, as wells a binder with CDs I like to take with me.

The peeler - Still use it on potatoes and carrots.

Two sets of keys for one single car - Yep, as well as a valet key.

Metal ice tray - I don't have an ice machine in my refrigerator and the plastic ones can sometimes be hard to empty. The metal one works the best.

Give it a couple of days. Your eye was changed and it'll take some time for it to recover.
