Abrams camp rejects ‘false rumors’ about her no-show at Biden event
https://www.ajc.com/politics/politics-b ... 64VYDOXXI/

Stacey Abrams’ campaign slammed the “false rumors” about her decision to skip President Joe Biden’s voting rights event in Atlanta and called on anonymous operatives to stop spreading inaccuracies about the Georgia Democrat.

Abrams spokesman Seth Bringman said Wednesday that “unnamed aides” in Washington anonymously promoted a falsehood published by several national outlets that the gubernatorial candidate bypassed the event Tuesday after she was refused a speaking slot.

“Stacey did not presume she would receive an invitation, nor did she or any member of our team ask for her to have a speaking spot at an event she could not attend,” Bringman said in a statement to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Abrams hasn’t specified what led her to bypass Biden’s event, though Bringman on Wednesday said it was a private “commitment she could not break.” He said by the time a colleague was sent an invitation from the White House for Abrams to attend, her plans were already set.

[snip][end]

Maybe she was upset she didn't get an invitation to speak. Maybe she felt the speech didn't go far enough. But in the end - that's all speculation, and is not the reason she stated as to why she didn't attend.

Politicians (or would-be running for office ones) may lie, but unless you have evidence she's doing so, I accept her explanation. It definitely wasn't "because Biden is so unpopular."

How is it a person running for governor especially an African American would believe they would not be invited to a speech in their home state given by a president who is a member of their party not be invited.
Please surely you do not believe the excuses coming from the Abrams camp. The truth is she didn't want to be seen on the same stage as Joe Biden.

There WERE some civil rights groups who chose not to attend. Again, I will only say, maybe this was Ms. Abrams' reason but it would be speculation. What is definitely NOT her reason is "Biden's unpopularity".

Georgia voting rights groups boycott Biden's Atlanta speech: 'We don't need even more photo ops. We need action'
https://www.cnn.com/2022/01/10/politics ... index.html

A coalition of voting rights groups in Georgia announced Monday that they will not attend events surrounding President Joe Biden's expected visit to Atlanta, urging for concrete action instead of what they called a "photo op."

Cliff Albright, co-founder of Black Voters Matter, and representatives of several voting rights groups urged Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to remain in Washington on Tuesday if they don't have a clear plan to advance voting rights legislation. Some of the groups that urged Biden to skip his Atlanta trip are the Asian American Advocacy Fund, GALEO Impact Fund Inc. and New Georgia Project Action Fund.

"We don't need even more photo ops. We need action, and that action is in the form of the John Lewis Voting Rights (Advancement) Act as well as the Freedom to Vote Act, and we need that immediately," Albright told reporters on Monday.

Several major civil rights leaders are scheduled to attend Biden and Harris' speeches in Atlanta on Tuesday, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson and the Rev. Al Sharpton. Marc Morial, the president of the National Urban League; Derrick Johnson, the head of the NAACP; Melanie Campbell, the chief executive of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation and many other civil rights and voting rights leaders will also be attending.

But the decision by the coalition of voting groups to skip the speech underscores the risks to Biden and Democrats of failure on voting rights legislation as crucial midterm elections loom. Republicans in state legislatures around the country have tightened voting laws and installed loyalists to former President Donald Trump on election boards. Two major pieces of legislation that would aim to counteract these GOP measures are stalled in the Senate, unable to overcome the 60-vote filibuster rule needed to end debate on a bill, leading to growing frustration among activists.

[snip]

Last month, Martin Luther King III, his wife, Arndrea Waters King, and their daughter, Yolanda Renee King, called for "no celebration" of MLK Day without the passage of voting rights legislation.

The Kings plan to mobilize activists on MLK weekend and march across the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in Washington, DC, on January 17.

[snip][end]

So, again to summarize:
1. many civil rights groups and leaders did attend. I also haven't seen whether Warnock was there.
2. some chose not to, but felt it was over the issue of "less talk, more action"
2a. MHO: the action has to come from legislators in the legislature, but a POTUS can push the ball rolling through the bully pulpit, which is what I think he was doing in Atlanta. It also was a good speech, and explained the moral imperatives for action. So I don't think it was a bad thing, and it was a good speech.
3. Until I see reasons to think Abrams isn't telling the truth, I accept her explanation.

You and most liberals wouldn't know common sense if it bit you in the ass.

Changing filibuster rules would result in short term gain for liberal Democrats. Followed by long term setbacks for our country.
The things you and most other liberals support would result in the first steps towards the end of our union.
People who reside in all that red area would not sit still for long once the extreme left took away their political voices.

But you folks are so myopic and partisan you can't or refuse to envision the inevitable of what would happen once you take the political voice away from so many.

Joe Biden and the liberal agenda he has been pressing is so unpopular that people running for office in Georgia refuse to be seen with him. The liberal agenda he has been supporting has resulted in trumpian approval numbers.

Here we go again with the commie bullshit.

Biden has been successful. Economy is doing well. Unemployment is low. His low approval numbers are the result of a corporate owned media that went on the attack since last summer.

The ones who didn't attend said they felt Biden was giving it too much lip service, and not enough action.

That point might be interesting to discuss. There were other civil rights leaders who did attend. I also pointed out where I think their criticism misses a certain larger picture.

Again, your claim they didn't attend because they think Biden is "far left" or "unpopular" (with whom?) is your speculation. That's all.

It’s disappointing that Abrams wasn’t there. However, she claims to have a legitimate reason, and she put out a statement outlining the importance of what Biden and Harris had to say.

Yes she did and that legitimate reason was being seen at a public event in Georgia with Joe Biden would hurt her chances of winning
