MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. —
Residents in a Central Coast neighborhood are being evacuated due to a wildfire in the area, officials said.

Cal Fire said what is being called the Colorado Fire was reported around 7:15 p.m. in the Palo Colorado Canyon and Rocky Creek Road area in Monterey County. So far, it has burned anywhere between 75-100 acres.

The Monterey County Office of Emergency Services said all areas west of the 3800 block of Palo Colorado Road to Highway 1 and south to Bixby Creek were ordered to evacuate. The office also announced that an American Red Cross shelter will be available for those impacted by the wildfire at Carmel Middle School, located on 4380 Carmel Valley Road at Carmel-By-The-Sea.

In your opinion as a resident of California are they building homes in places that are prone to wildfires..I know where I live they seem to be building every where even in places that would be better off left undeveloped

I live about 1/4 Mile from part of the Golden Gate Recreation Area. I love the area, but I am aware of the huge fire danger.

People who build their homes in wild fire areas assume a lot of risk. I mean, I know people who have moved up Pollock Pines (El Dorado County, one of the stops on famous Pony Express) because of beauty of the area, they are in IMHO, idiots.

Just recently plans were shelved for building homes in Sonoma and Napa (we have some nasty fires up there recently). People with money like to prove they live where they want, but they ignore fire danger at their risk.

Gail and I our go bags at the ready in case of a fire. Our Mink Cat, Khawn Jai is a rescue who found in one of the burn areas a few years ago, she just plain freaks out if she sees fire on the TV (she is only cat we have ever had that will watch TV. The smell of wood smoke freaks her out.

You build in a wildfire area, you should know the risk going in. I have little or no mercy for these people who their "Vacation Homes" in forested areas and then upset when their homes burn to cinders, they act all surprise and amazed it would happen.

I love visiting the National Forests, but building home near them is kinda like Nature Weeding Out The Stupid.

I know of very few areas that aren't in danger from one natural disaster or another. Should we just depopulate the west coast for earthquakes? The east coast for hurricanes? Tornado alley? Flood plains?

I'd say that depopulating the parts of the nation that are forested will certainly be problematic. How do you propose to do that? Do you plan for them to be compensated for losing their land and maybe their jobs, since they may lose them when relocated.

And do you want to let us know where these people are to be relocated to that isn't prone to natural disasters?

There are no perfect solutions for the problem, which is getting worse for a lot of reasons.

Here are some suggestions, none of which would represent a full solution.

1. National resilience must be our #1 priority. It is an integral part of any viable common defense, which is enumerated in the constitution as a fundamental reason for government in this country. This means beefing up the Federal and state emergency capability to match our military readiness, using much the same kinds of structures and capabilities we keep ready for the eventuality of war. It also means creating a culture of readiness and a comprehensive set of contingency plans that activate as needed.

2. There are many places which, if they don't already have old indigenous American names meaning the same things already, should be given them, on an informal understanding that could lead to legislation and sane land use.

Place where you will burn
Place where you will sink
No Escape Gulch
Avalanche Hill
Place where you don't drill for oil, water, or anything else
Place that eats roads
Place that eats bridges
Place of large flames
Place of big waters
Death Valley (oops, that one's already official)
What you put here will burn
What you put here will wash away
What you put here will be buried
What you put here will be shaken into small pieces with you at the bottom
What you put here, you don't bother to insure
If you live here, have your will ready in safe deposit in a vault elsewhere

3. Until we find more habitable planets, we take better care of this one. That includes finding a humane and equitable means of limiting damage to its natural cycles.

4. Recognition that laissez-faire capitalism has failed every time it's ever been tried. Sane limits on real estate speculation, land clearing, river damming, coastal construction, unsafe power transmission lines, oil drilling, water injection down old wells, gas storage in voids left by earthquake faults, amassing of huge personal wealth absent equitable taxation, and private profit from national lands dedicated to use by the whole population.

5. Get serious about the climate, and solve a whole bunch of social problems by getting everyone involved in the solution, such as it is.

6. Think.
