Seems to be a growing toxicity in relation to American societal relations and the truth and I think it is in line with the change in wealth distribution and budget priorities over the past few decades. The more that is withheld from the public and human needs and infrastructure the more money that has been instead redirected towards destabilizing all things protect people, their freedom and ability to live. All of the news stations have become mis information machines that dont even resemble what they used to be, not that they were ever perfect but its just become so ridiculous what they do now and how much more they misinform us than inform us.

Our leaders’ contempt for the truth has led us into war
Then as now, it began with lies. On Sept. 1, 1939, Adolf Hitler’s forces crossed the border into Poland. The German chancellor did so on the pretext that ethnic Germans were being persecuted. German operatives, disguised as Poles, even staged an attack on a German radio station, yelling anti-German threats into the microphone.

With that lie, the most devastating war in the history of the world began. It is far too early to know how devastating this latest European war will turn out to be, how many will die, how many will be left homeless and stateless, how the repercussions will play out across the globe. There is, however, an ominous resonance in the lies from which it arose.

First, Russian leader Vladimir Putin claimed he had no intention of invading Ukraine, even as he massed troops on that country’s border. Then he announced Russia would recognize two separatist regions. Finally, shortly before Russian ordnance began to pound the smaller country, he announced a “military operation” aimed at “peacekeeping” and “denazification.”

Now, as then, lies. And now, as then, what strikes you is not just the utter brazenness of them, but the threadbare flimsiness of them. Hitler, granted, put some work into his lie, but at the end of the day, was anyone really expected to believe that Poland, which had more horses than tanks, had suddenly decided to attack its heavily armed neighbor?

Putin’s lies are even shoddier. He would have us believe his forces were needed to keep the peace in a nation that was at peace and to evict Nazis from a nation whose democratically elected president is a Jew. These are the kinds of lies you tell when you don’t care what anyone thinks. Their very shabbiness is an expression of contempt.......

There is clearly a lot of contempt for truth and disinformation out there, thing is at the moment there is a specific locus (and you just touched on it).

Yes, social media is increasingly a big part of what we might call media ecology, and the disinformers are focusing on it.

Facebook, Twitter remove disinformation accounts targeting Ukrainians
The larger of the two disinformation groups operated in Russia, as well as the Russian-dominated Donbas and Crimea regions of Ukraine.
https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/internet/f ... -rcna17880

Facebook and Twitter removed two anti-Ukrainian “covert influence operations” over the weekend, one tied to Russia and another with connections to Belarus, the companies said.

One of the operations, a propaganda campaign featuring a website pushing anti-Ukraine talking points, was an offshoot of a known Russian disinformation operation. A Facebook spokesperson said it used computer-generated faces to bolster the credibility of fake columnists across several platforms, including Instagram.

The other campaign used hacked accounts to push similar anti-Ukraine propaganda and was tied to a known Belarusian hacking group.

[snip]

The announcement also demonstrates that Russia continues to use disinformation strategies first identified years ago around the 2016 election, albeit with some advancements — most notably the use of software that can create realistic and original human faces.

The larger of the two disinformation groups operated in Russia, as well as the Russian-dominated Donbas and Crimea regions of Ukraine, said Nathaniel Gleicher, Meta's head of security policy, and it is tied to the websites News Front and South Front, which the U.S. government has designated as part of a broader disinformation effort that had connections to Russian intelligence. (Meta is the parent company of Facebook.)

[snip]

Facebook removed profiles related to News Front and South Front in 2020, and the company confirmed to NBC News that the new group shared connections to the accounts that were previously banned. Both websites have pushed misleading articles, questioning the results of the 2020 presidential election and the efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines. The State Department identified the websites as Russian disinformation outlets in a 2020 report.

The websites featured articles pushing Russian talking points like “Zelensky is building a neo-Nazi dictatorship in Ukraine” and “Why Ukraine will only get worse.” As of Sunday night, the sites still featured the biographies and computer-generated faces of the columnists and linked out to their accounts on VKontakte, Russia’s Facebook competitor.

[snip][end]

All I'm gonna say is RT is also part of this crap, and I will repeat Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, and many other liberals should never have been on it.

Nielsen Files Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against TVSquared

Nielsen has sued potential rival TVSquared, alleging that TVSquared infringed on a Nielsen patent covering measuring audience exposure across platforms while protecting viewers’ personal information.

TVSquared was acquired last week for about $160 million by Innovid, which said “the transaction unlocks a new currency-grade standard for cross-platform TV measurement, powered by the scale and automation of a global ad server.”

FCC begins implementing rules on foreign government leasing agreements

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced on Tuesday that it has begun implementing rules requiring broadcasters to report when airwave time has been leased by foreign governments or representatives.

Under the rule, new leasing agreements are immediately subject to the mandate, while existing ones have up to six months from the Federal Register publication date to comply with the rule, which was adopted last April.

Lately, the NYT, at least in its editorial page, has been engaging in a lot of what I like to call "bothsiderism".

So, Ted Lieu on Twitter excellently called them out on a recent editorial.

[ted lieu tweeted]

"Americans are losing hold of a fundamental right as citizens of a free country: the right to speak their minds and voice their opinions in public without fear of being shamed or shunned," writes the New York Times editorial board.
[end[

Uhhhh ... NYT, that's an imaginary right. Nothing in the 1st amendment (or really any principle of logic or ethics) says you have the right to say something without other people criticizing or critiquing it.

Now ... to be clear ... if your criticisms of someone else's speech are mistaken, taken out of context, baseless, misrepresented, or otherwise unfair or even potentially slanderous ... they or other people also have the right to respond to YOU and point this out. (In the most severe situation, it could even result in legal action.)

This is really how this free speech thing is supposed to work. :D

Nielsen Agrees To Be Acquired for $16 Billion by Private Equity Group

Nielsen Holdings reached an agreement to be acquired by a group of private-equity investors led by Elliott Investment Management and Brookfield Business Partners in a deal worth $16 billion, including Nielsen debt.

The deal comes as Nielsen has been under pressure from investors for a falling stock price and by the media industry for its slow response to measuring a more complex media environment in which fewer people are watching traditional TV and more are streaming.

Stations Often ‘Last Local News Source Standing,’ Says Emily Barr at B+C Hall of Fame

Emily Barr, former president and CEO of Graham Media Group, gave an impassioned speech at the B+C Hall of Fame as she was inducted April 14. Barr urged local broadcast to stay strong amidst its mounting challenges.

“I have never been known to be shy so tonight I want to take a moment to speak a little truth to power,” she said. “If 42 years in local broadcasting has taught me anything, it is that each of us fundamentally identifies with the communities in which we live.”

Less advocacy, more journalism. Changes at CNN and New York Times may signal push to the centre

The highest echelons of the US media were once again in the spotlight this week, after CNN this week abandoned a newly launched streaming service and the New York Times appointed a prominent Bostonian to lead it.

CNN+ will shut down on 30 April, about a month after it was launched with a $300m investment. The new owner of the network, Warner Bros Discovery – itself the product of a $43bn merger between AT&T and the Discovery Network – decided a subscription-based streaming service was unfeasible. Only 100,000 users had signed up.

At News 12 New Jersey, A Staff Exodus Over Workplace Toxicity Claims

Mass resignations have rocked the editorial staff at News 12 New Jersey. According to three sources close to the situation, who spoke under conditions of anonymity in part because they fear retribution from Altice, the cable news channel’s owner, recent and pending departures of News 12 New Jersey’s news director, assistant news director, two executive producers and a senior producer came down to charges of a toxic work environment cultivated by upper management for the past two years.

Leadership has been insincere, dishonest and condescending toward staffers, sources tell TVNewsCheck. They exhibited a lack of compassion when workers communicated personal and professional needs during the global pandemic and in individually challenging moments. And micromanaging has rendered employees uninspired, disillusioned and afraid to make independent decisions

Gigi Sohn’s FCC Prospects Fading Absent Senate Action ASAP

It’s not looking good for Gigi Sohn’s nomination to fill the third Democratic seat on the Federal Communications Commission, one that’s extremely long-vacant — for well over a year — and would give the Biden FCC the majority it needs to restore network-neutrality rules or do other things Republicans won’t sign off on.

The legislative days are dwindling down to a precious few. There are only about four weeks left on the Senate legislative calendar before the August recess, after which lawmakers will be focused on getting themselves re-elected in the midterms.

US newspapers continuing to die at rate of 2 each week

NEW YORK (AP) — Despite a growing recognition of the problem, the United States continues to see newspapers die at the rate of two per week, according to a report issued Wednesday on the state of local news.

Areas of the country that find themselves without a reliable source of local news tend to be poorer, older and less educated than those covered well, Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media and Integrated Marketing Communications said.

And many surviving newspapers are in a classic death spiral, having lost all their advertising. They get smaller and less consequential, which loses more readers, which loses more ad dollars, and the decline accelerates.

For example, I give the LA Times ten more years max. It's gone from a mighty empire with a huge building across from City Hall to a thin rag published reluctantly from a hole in El Segundo, right next to the refinery.

Licht Names CNN Leadership Team

Chris Licht, chairman at CNN, has selected the executives to make up his leadership team. Virginia Moseley is the new executive VP of editorial, reported the NY Times, with oversight of much of CNN’s newsgathering on television and online. She had been overseeing TV newsgathering, with digital news overseen by another executive.

Michael Bass is executive VP of programming, Amy Entelis is executive VP of talent and content development, and Ken Jautz is executive VP of news. Jautz will maintain oversight of HLN, reported Variety. The three had similar roles under Jeff Zucker, who stepped down as CNN president in February.

T-Mobile settles to pay $350M to customers in data breach

NEW YORK (AP) — T- Mobile has agreed to pay $350 million to customers affected by a class action lawsuit filed after the company disclosed last August that personal data like social security numbers had been stolen in a cyberattack.

In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Friday, the mobile phone company said the funds would pay for claims by class members, the legal fees of plaintiffs’ counsel and the costs of administering the settlement. It also said it would spend $150 million next year and in 2023 to fortify its data security and other technologies.

Nexstar Media Group to Acquire The CW Network

IRVING, TX – Nexstar Media Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: NXST) (“Nexstar”) (the “Company”) announced today that it entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a 75 percent ownership interest in The CW Network, LLC (“The CW” or the “Network”). Warner Bros. Discovery (Nasdaq: WBD) and Paramount Global (Nasdaq: PARA, PARAA), the current co-owners of The CW, will each retain a 12.5 percent ownership interest in The CW and will continue to produce original, scripted content for the Network.

Nexstar, together with its partner stations, is the nation’s largest local television broadcasting company and the largest CW affiliate group with 37 CW and CW Plus affiliates, including affiliates in five of the top ten DMAs, accounting for 32 percent of the Network’s national reach. The proposed transaction is expected to create value for Nexstar shareholders by solidifying the Company’s revenue opportunities as the largest CW affiliate, diversifying its content outside of news, increasing its exposure to the national advertising market, establishing it as a participant in advertising video-on-demand services and improving The CW ratings, revenue, and profitability, by prioritizing programing for the Network’s broadcast audience.

Three media articles on who John Malone really is

Trump Donor John Malone Could Soon Be Calling Shots at CNN

What will CNN become under John Malone?

“I would like to see CNN evolve back to the kind of journalism that it started with, and actually have journalists, which would be unique and refreshing,” the media billionaire Malone told CNBC (11/18/21) in November.

https://fair.org/home/trump-donor-john- ... ts-at-cnn/

Malone, GCI Liberty Board Get Nod for $110 Million Settlement

“Cable cowboy” John Malone, other former members of GCI Liberty Inc.'s board, and a group of investors secured the approval of a Delaware judge for a $110 million settlement resolving a challenge to the telecom holding company’s merger with an affiliate, Liberty Broadband Corp.

Vice Chancellor Sam Glasscock III signed off Wednesday on the deal, ending litigation in Delaware’s Chancery Court over the combination between the two Malone affiliates, each of which holds a large stake in operating subsidiary Charter Communications Inc.

JOHN MALONE’S CNN MISCALCULATION

Far be it from anyone to question the wisdom of John Malone.

Though he may not be a household name, the 80-year-old is revered among those in the know in the media business for his peerless strategic acumen. The Liberty Media Corp. chairman is essentially the architect of the profit machine that is the modern pay TV business, and you don’t get that successful without knowing how to play multi-level chess while the rest of the industry plays checkers. Just think of him as the mogul’s mogul.

Yup, he's a key figure in the righty media takeover, just like Murdoch.

Even on its own, CNN has had conservative phases before. One of them foisted drumpf on us in the first place, with the help of Putin and Cambridge Analytics. Zucker, who had worked with him before, made him a daily hero on CNN. It would appear, though, that you ain't seen nothin' yet.

And Liberty Media currently also owns Formula 1. Make of that what you will.

The FCC has fined a low power TV station $60,000 for palming off paid appearances as news appearances, violating the FCC's sponsorship identification rules.

The FCC's Media Bureau entered into a consent decree earlier this month with Reynolds Media over segments in what was purported to be a news and public affairs program on Reynolds Media's K26GS-D Harrison, Arkansas.

But unless Republicans can take over both houses of Congress in the midterm election, the bill is unlikely to get traction.
