It was a democratic party president in charge when our government contributed to the disaster in Waco
Nobody forced that apocalyptic cult maniac David Koresh to abuse children, stockpile illegal weapons, fire on & kill ATF agents who attempted to take him in without violence; or set his own compound on fire, killing almost all present, including the children. That's all on him. The government showed restraint; they waited months before finally deciding it was time for his reign of terror to end.
It was a democratic party president who sent armed military into the home in Florida to kidnap a little boy then send him back to a communist hell hole.
Unfortunately, his relatives in Hialeah were not his closest living family members, but his father in Cuba wanted the child back. That did not give the great uncle in Hialeah a license to kidnap. Doesn't work that way.
BTW, I've been to the house where it all happened. Family doesn't live there anymore.
I was hearing about everything going down in local papers. Boy oh boy, the whole family was nutty, including the fisherman who found the kid and had apparently fallen in love with Marisleysis and decided to become an honorary family member.
Oh, and Mr. "people should protest lawfully" let me point out Cubans in this area were burning tires in the streets and committing vandalism after then-INS removed the child. I accept their right to protest. But not do THAT shit. Did you know there were people who said the child Elian made a statue of the Virgin Mary cry tears in a local church? That the Virgin Mary's face appeared in their bathroom mirror and then later on a nearby bank window. (I don't believe it but I met people who told me that.) Then there were the ones who said a Santeria voodoo priest would kill the child if he went back to Cuba under Fidel's orders. Uh huh.
I'm not lying when I say, with all honesty, Janet Reno was a family friend. This is kinda why I bristle at people trashing her over these incidents. I think she made the right call in both cases, if not the most popular one with certain groups. (Militia nuts, RW Cubans.)
It was a democratic party president who put Americans in concentration camps.
Against the over-arching objections of every conservative and Republican in the country. and in Congress. Right? (Got any examples?)
No - you don't - never mention that; interesting. I would argue he did it because conservatives, largely from Western states, pressed him to do it. Now to be clear - I'm not excusing his action, just pointing out where the pressure to do it was coming.
Just like I too blame him for failing to admit more Jewish refugees from the Shoah in the 30s, but I also know that it was (largely anti-Semitic) conservatives in the State Dept. that were largely pressuring him not to lift refugee quotas.
If only FDR had listened to Eleanor, he would have done the right thing on Japanese internment, Jewish refugee quotas, and the anti lynching law. Without getting into all the speculations on their relationship, all I can say is, I wish he had.
