Honk for Jesus

Post by ProfX »

Yep, I'm putting this in Politics and Current Events, not Entertainment.

Jordan Peele is baaaaaack ..... :D
(Jordan Peele is an executive producer; Daniel Kaluuya, just a producer)

Review: In ‘Honk for Jesus,’ a megachurch mockumentary
https://apnews.com/article/honk-for-jes ... bb7427e7d0

Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown give fully committed performances in “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul,” so why does the film lack faith in itself?

“Honk for Jesus,” Adamma Ebo’s directorial debut based on her own short film, is centered on a pair ripe for parody: Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Brown) and his loyal wife, Trinitie (Hall), leaders of an Atlanta-area Southern Baptist megachurch called Wander to Greater Paths. It takes about half a minute to realize Childs’ spiritual center is more designer label than Deuteronomy. Showing off their closets, Lee-Curtis gives thanks for being “blessed with some beautiful Prada.”

After a quick montage of brighter days for Wander to Greater Paths, “Honk for Jesus” catches up with the pastor and his wife on the heels of a scandal that has emptied their congregation of 25,000. Their faces are still bright, though, as they welcome a documentary crew outside the church to chronicle their revival, leading up to an Easter reopening. When Lee-Curtis steps in chewing gum and Trinitie asks the camerawoman to edit around that, she gets no reply. “Oh, that’s right,” she says. “You’re the fly-on-the-wall type.”

The mockumentary has always been a dependable way to satirize not just a character or two but a subset of society. After what Christopher Guest did to the world of dog shows and Rob Reiner did to rock bands, Ebo and her producer sister, Adanne Ebo, have aimed at the rich realm of megachurches, taking inspiration from a real 2010 scandal at Georgia’s New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.

A Black Slavery Baptist Convention megachurch?

Haha no thanks.

Sounds, though, like it's based on perverts like Bishop Eddie Long (Missionary Baptist), crooks like Henry Lyons (National Baptist Convention USA, Inc.), and some of these other con/conservative a-holes.

The people depicted in this one-sheet do look rather repugnant, though I give them one very small point for racial balance. Repugnant people do, of course, come in all races, but I have to agree with those who say the white repugnant people often do more damage to the culture as a whole since they are granted a privileged position from which to spout their crap.

But then, it appears that the film makers want us to see them as repugnant, like the repugnant dollars-for-Jesus tradition that they represent. I like movies that expose hypocrisy and mass media fraud in the way this one looks like it might. I still consider Wag the Dog to be one of the best movies ever made about the intersection of mass media and politics. In its own humorous way, it says as much about us as did the far grimmer Citizen Kane.

We'll have to see on this one, though.

Looks to me like a satire of televangelism and the so-called prosperity gospel. Perhaps a very good moment for that.

There are both black and white pimps for it; I don't think Jordan Peele would be making this movie otherwise.

It's done in a kind of funny, mockumentary "Spinal Tap" style.

Now I haven't seen it; this is what I'm mostly taking from trailers, reactions, the film site, and reviews.

I think I'm gonna like it. Sci-fi and fantasy isn't ALL I enjoy. :D

BTW, I showed Wag the Dog for my Sociology Through Film course.

Website (and elsewhere) says "In Theaters and on Peacock September 2nd".

Of course ... I seriously doubt it's going to free Peacock streaming right away, will prolly be on Peacock Premium.

I love satire it is my favorite form of comedy. I grew up a few miles from the true father of TV Evangelists, Rex Humbard.
He had a buffet restaurant next door to his church " The Cathedral of Tomorrow" that was open on Sunday.
We also had Earnest Angley the faith healer with the bad wig. His wife died of cancer he told his listeners God took her because god didn't want to share him with anyone.
He also buried his wife with a telephone and had a 1 million dollar monument built as her headstone.
Here in SC we used to swim at Jim Bakkers water park. PTL pass the loot, pay the lady.
Can't wait until that flick makes Amazon or Netflix

When I lived in the Chicago area there two guys, Steve Dahl and Ed Vrdolyak, who, iirc, were involved in exposing Angley’s faith healing scam.

I remember the Cathedral of Tomorrow and the Cathedral Buffet restaurant that was part of the whole thing. The complex is empty now.

My parents loved these crooks, including that pervert Angeley.

Alleged pervert, anyway. https://www.forbes.com/sites/michellefa ... 375bb45508

Like Eddie Long, Ted Haggard, George Rekers, Paul Crouch, Matthew Makela, Bishop Jim Swilley, Paul Barnes, and the rest of these conservative men, they’re the biggest freaks around.

But don’t they weep prettily when they are caught? They always “fell short” as though they didn’t know or realize what they were doing.

And the “faithful” fork over the bucks.

Locals called thsr unfinished tower where he had planned to build a circular rotating restaurant Sexy Rexy's last erection.

( he didn't have the correct permits and the tower wasn't built to code)

Back when I sold cars they used to tell stories about Earnest buying new caddy's. Turns out he had no sense of style and would order cars that the interior colors didn't match the body.
Killing any resale value.

My mom was a big Jimmy Swigart fan. I used to tell her if he ever got caught with just one more prostitute that was it I would quit supporting him.
She would then call me an asshole while my dad laughed.

THEY fell short or had a moment of weakness or were tempted by a Jezebel, or whatever.

When everyone else does the same thing, the same people immediately condemn them to hell. :problem:

Conservatives are not the only people who congregate around this kind of deep self-loathing. But conservatives sure have perfected it. Especially the conservative Christians. :?

We were talking about Jay Bakker a few days ago viewtopic.php?t=1147, who is the son of "Jim and Tammy." When Jim and Tammy went their separate ways, we saw a different side of her. No less over-the-top, no less fervently Evangelical, but she was able IMO to break free a bit.

OTOH, Jim Bakker is STILL on the air, STILL has followers, and is crazier than ever. It's why I respect Jay Bakker's work, as well as Tammy Sue Bakker for just saying effffff thissssssss and staying out of the limelight.

Christian Evangelicalism is some truly "only in America" stuff, FBOFW.

There are both black and white pimps for it;
Don't I know it.

Latino, Asian, and Asian-American, as well. It's not lost on anyone that the largest church in the world also happens to be a prosperity gospel church, Yoido Full Gospel in Seoul. My parents were really into founder David Yonggi Cho, who at the time went by Paul Yonggi Cho. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoido_Full_Gospel_Church

Somewhat like the Moonies, the draw in mid-centiry Korea to this ideology was via anti-communism, and Korea having been horribly occupied and mistreated by Japan.

It will surprise no one that Pastor Cho is another fleece-the-flock crook. But I wish people who do these types of articles would take the time to look into things like what distinguishes Korean Christianity, Korean Protestantism, and Korean Evangelicalism. These things develop the way they do for a reason. They end up having an effect on the motherland, the USA, when they reach our shores, not just via the air waves but via the people who immigrate here and bring these religious cultures with them.

Why the World’s Largest Church Still Worships Its Embezzling Former Leader - Vice

This headline is a mistake. I've never visited this church, and if there's a cultish element to Yoido Full Gospel, that would not surprise me at all. But I can guarantee they do not worship the leader, they worship Jesus Christ.

Interestingly, the prosperity gospel has also really taken off in post-colonial (and corrupt dictator-era) western Africa. Anecdotally, one of the first groups to take advantage of Perestroika and Glasnost were the Charismatic Evangelicals, which is where the prosperity gospel comes from. I really wish a religion scholar would look into this because in my view, it explains a lot as to why there are such strong ties now with the extremist racist right and their love for Putinism.

I don't think Jordan Peele would be making this movie otherwise.

Sigh, looks like I'm going to have to see it sooner or later.

Lol it will probably be pretty hilarious, really.
