Secret Service official central to Jan. 6 testimony on Trump's actions retires

Tony Ornato, the senior Secret Service official who broke with agency precedent to serve as a political adviser during former President Donald Trump's administration and who was at the center of testimony by former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson about Trump's actions on Jan. 6, announced his retirement, Monday.

The 25-year veteran of federal law enforcement who served under five presidents became eligible for retirement earlier this year and departs the agency in "good standing," according to a Secret Service official. His departure from his post as head of training was announced within the U.S. Secret Service, Monday afternoon. It follows the announcement of President Biden's next pick to lead the agency: Kim Cheatle.

New political restrictions set for Justice Dept. appointees

Attorney General Merrick Garland, who is currently overseeing investigations including the FBI search of former President Donald Trump’s home and the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, said in a memo that the restrictions are to ensure that politics “both in fact and appearance” won't affect the way the law is enforced or how inquiries are carried out.

Appointees, hired under presidential administrations rather than making long careers at the Justice Department, have been allowed to attend political events passively on their personal time with prior approval. The new policy bans attendance altogether.

Arizona judge slaps down Finchem, Gosar over defamation suit

PHOENIX (AP) — An Arizona judge has ordered three Republicans, including secretary of state nominee Mark Finchem and U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar, to pay $75,000 in attorney fees for filing a defamation suit against a former Democratic lawmaker “primarily for purposes of harassment.”

The Republicans filed the lawsuit last year against former Democratic state Rep. Charlene Fernandez after she called for an investigation of their roles in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The judge dismissed the lawsuit in April, saying Fernandez's request was protected by the First Amendment’s rights to free speech and to petition the government.

Feel better Mikael all the best.

Mikael Hakkarainen Retires Due To Heart Condition

Mikael Hakkarainen will always have the honor of being traded straight up for the reigning Vezina Trophy winner. He was the sole return for the Vegas Golden Knights when they sent Marc-Andre Fleury to the Chicago Blackhawks last year in a salary dump. Unfortunately, he will no longer get a chance to further his hockey story. Hakkarainen has announced his retirement due to a heart condition that could threaten his life if he continued to play.

Selected in the fifth round of the 2018 draft, his story is one of unrealized potential, after starring in Finland minor hockey and then playing well at the USHL level for several years. After just one game with Providence College, he decided to leave the NCAA circuit, which could have potentially helped his development far more than the path he chose. After another year in the USHL, he entered professional hockey and barely played, suiting up just 14 total times in the AHL and another nine in the ECHL.

Juul to pay nearly $440M to settle states’ teen vaping probe

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Electronic cigarette maker Juul Labs has agreed to pay nearly $440 million to settle a two-year investigation by 33 states into the marketing of its high-nicotine vaping products, which have long been blamed for sparking a national surge in teen vaping.

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong announced the deal Tuesday on behalf of the states plus Puerto Rico, which joined together in 2020 to probe Juul’s early promotions and claims about the benefits of its technology as a smoking alternative.

It’s been an amazing run best wishes to the cast & crew of Phantom of the Opera.

'Phantom of the Opera' is closing on Broadway

The Broadway show The Phantom of the Opera will close after nearly 35 years, Time Out’s sources said on Friday afternoon. The show is slated to close in February.

Broadway's longest-running show, Phantom has delighted audiences at 13,733 performances since it opened in 1988, per the New York Post, which broke news of the closing earlier today. But the Post also reported the show has struggled since the pandemic and is losing "some $1 million a month."
