My internet is running slow as it does every year at this time as little Johnny fires up his new computer.

My Internet runs so slow all the time it's a bit implausible that little Johnny's new computer could slow it down any more.

Try unplugging your modem for 30 seconds and then plug it back in and wait for it to come up to speed and see if that fixes it. Most of the time, for me, that works.

Have you done a virus check on your computer to make sure nothing strange has been downloaded without your knowledge?

You can also check you internet speed at Speed Test

I find if the upload and download speeds are normal then it's something to do with my computer. If they're low then it's either increased usage or a problem from your provider. A couple of months ago my internet speed, as well as my neighbor, was slow for two or three of days so I called the cable company. When they came out they checked my modem and connections and found nothing wrong. They then went down the alley and found there was a piece of equipment starting to go out so they replaced it and everything was back to normal.

We have a speed test thread, my speed was by far the lowest speed here. I've been hooked up at other peoples houses. And at my house I have hooked up using all of the computers I've owned during the last ten years. I've changed modems and routers when they have died. It's the provider who is slow.

It's slow because it is slow, and it is the same amount slow foe everyone up here in the hills. It has been that way since internet first came to the area. The telephone company is the provider and there's no competition because there are so few people here no one wants to have half of a market they would lose money on it they had all of the market.

I don't expect it will get better. :|

I just ran the speed test you linked to: "DOWNLOAD 4.67 Mbps"

Where Sam lives, there's a perennial bandwidth problem. I've had it too up there. His description of the situation is right on, so I don't have to repeat it.

Oh, jeezuz, don't make me look at Agit Prop on Christmas.

If it's at your provider's end and not because of the line equipment then there's not much you can do about it. Have you looked at a satellite internet provider? They don't have the speeds of cable companies but it sounds like they're a lot faster than what you have now.
