Facebook moves 1.5bn users out of reach of new European privacy law

Facebook has moved more than 1.5 billion users out of reach of European privacy law, despite a promise from Mark Zuckerberg to apply the “spirit” of the legislation globally.

Mmph.

Well, and then there is Google, which is Android, collecting data even when the location services are turned off. (And good luck doing much with your phone these days with location services turned off....)

Android phones still track you when location services are off: Even phones that have been reset to their factory settings can tell Google where you are. - CNET

Is Facebook’s Campbell Brown a force to be reckoned with? Or is she fake news?

It was another terrible day for Facebook and the company had dispatched Campbell Brown, its head of news partnerships, to do some damage control.

It's too bad about Campbell Brown, man.

I had the craziest raging crush on her for years and then she started shilling for charter schools. Oh that girl gave me heart palpitations.

Anyway, she took this gig at Facebook, and then Facebook imploded. Or at least there was a ton of bad press about it. I don't think Ms. Brown is "fake news." Her stupid problem is she's just a moderate Republican, which really only speaks to her bad judgment and likely slant on whatever nooz is going to come out of "news partnerships".

Lol but then, she could be replaced by an algorithm at any time, though, so I recommend she watch her back.

Police are using genetic testing companies to track down criminals - Fast Company

:problem:

Quote:
Privacy advocates have long been concerned that consumers are unaware that by submitting their DNA to these companies they are agreeing to let the companies share their DNA with law enforcement. There is also concern that the imperfect tests could put innocent people at risk. All the major commercial genetic testing companies’ policies state they will turn over your DNA to law enforcement when required to with a subpoena or warrant.

Update: The Mercury Daily News is reporting that the lead investigator in the Golden State Killer case has confirmed which DNA company law enforcement used to track down the fugitive. That would be open-source genealogy website GEDmatch. The site allows users to share their genetic profiles for free. Because the site is open-source no court records were needed to access the DNA records on it.

Emphasis in original.

Exclusive: Facebook commits to civil rights audit, political bias review

To address allegations of bias, Facebook is bringing in two outside advisors — one to conduct a legal audit of its impact on underrepresented communities and communities of color, and another to advise the company on potential bias against conservative voices.

Yeah, Facebook employees were practically embedded in the Trump's digital campaign in 2016. Sure shows how much they are biased against conservatives ...

Democrats plan to release 3,000+ Facebook ads linked to Russia

House Democrats are ready to pull the curtain open on more than 3,000 Facebook ads bought by Russians that aimed to disrupt the 2016 US presidential election.

"We have been in ongoing discussions with Facebook and hope to have the final redacted ads in our possession within a matter of days," Rep. Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, said in a statement. "As soon as we receive them, it is our intention to share them with the public."

Facebook suspends ~200 suspicious apps out of “thousands” reviewed so far

Did you just notice a Facebook app has gone AWOL? After reviewing “thousands” of apps on its platform following a major data misuse scandal that blew up in March, Facebook has announced it’s suspended around 200 apps — pending what it describes as a “thorough investigation” into whether or not their developers misused Facebook user data.

The action is part of a still ongoing audit of third party applications running on the platform announced by Facebook in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica data misuse scandal where a third party developer used quiz apps to extract and pass Facebook user data to the consultancy for political ad targeting purposes.

Why does she still need a campaign page?

Her primary election attempt is over. She lost by a 40% margin.

Dem lawmaker: ‘Looks like Zuckerberg lied to Congress’

A Democratic Congressman hammered Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg following a report that the company is sharing large amounts of its users’ data with other companies.

“Sure looks like Zuckerberg lied to Congress about whether users have ‘complete control’ over who sees our data on Facebook.’ Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) tweeted on Sunday.
