Several fashion company CEOs, two B-list TV actors, and many others with high net worths have just been indicted for bribing their kids' ways into prestigious colleges and/or athletic scholarships. Falsified test data and sports records are mentioned. This is a big one.

Dick's Sporting Goods removes guns and ammo from 125 stores

New York (CNN Business)Dick's Sporting Goods will stop selling guns and ammunition at 125 stores where firearm sales have struggled.

The company removed firearms and hunting accessories from 10 stores last fall as a test. The test went well and sales grew in those stores, Dick's said. Australia cancels right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulous’ VISA in wake of New Zealand attack

According to the Guardian, Australia’s immigration department “has the ability to block a visa from a person on character grounds if it perceives there’s a risk they will commit a crime, harass people, vilify a segment of the Australian community or incite discord.” And, as the country’s minister announced on Saturday, it has done so in the case of former Breitbart commentator Milo Yiannopolous.

Australia’s immigration minister David Coleman cited the recent comments about Islam the right-wing provocateur made in the wake of the attacks on Christchurch, where the commentator said in a Facebook post that the establishment “mollycoddles extremist leftism and barbaric, alien religious cultures.”

Businessman Sentenced to Prison for Investment Fraud Scheme

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – A local businessman was sentenced today to 2 1/2 years in prison for orchestrating a $1.3 million Ponzi scheme that caused losses to more than 40 victims.

According to court documents, Amrit Jaswant Singh Chahal, 31, of Fairfax, operated an investment fraud scheme through The Kane Capital Investment Group, LLC (Kane Capital), a company he established and operated. Chahal held out Kane Capital as a private capital investment group that sought to earn profits and investment returns on behalf of its clients by purchasing, trading, or otherwise investing in commodities for future delivery and other financial instruments. Chahal executed this fraud through falsely representing that Kane Capital had earned returns of roughly 28 to 34 percent annually, when in fact, Chahal had suffered substantial losses in managing investors’ funds. Chahal also created falsified brokerage statements to conceal the losses he had sustained and siphoned off some of his investors’ funds by transferring the money to accounts he controlled or by spending the funds on personal items. When investors asked for returns on their investment, Chahal frequently used money from newer investors to pay disbursements to older investors, without disclosing this fact to his investors. In addition, Chahal opened an unauthorized bank account in the name of one of his investors to further divert funds to his personal use.

Strict Airbnb rules in Santa Monica upheld by appeals court

In a blow to Airbnb, a federal appeals court upheld Santa Monica’s strict vacation-rental rules, which ban home stays unless a resident is present.

The beach town’s regulations, among the strictest in the nation, prohibit rentals of whole homes to travelers for less than 30 days. Vacation-rental hosts in the 90,000-person city can only rent rooms to tourists and must be present throughout the stay.

I'm opposed to Airbnb and similar businesses because they change the nature of local neighborhoods and cause the long-term residents headaches.

Buffalo man pleads guilty in Morgan mortgage fraud scheme

The U.S. Attorney’s office says a second suspect has pleaded guilty in a multi-million-dollar mortgage fraud scheme in Western New York. Authorities say Patrick Ogiony, 35, of Buffalo has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud.

Officials say between March 2011 and June 2017, Ogiony conspired with his co-defendants to defraud financial institutions, by providing false information overstating the incomes of properties owned by Morgan Management or certain principals of Morgan Management.

Cold case cracked? Alabama police charge truck-driving preacher with 1999 killings

A truck-driving preacher was charged Monday with killing two Alabama teenagers nearly 20 years ago after a DNA match linked him to the slayings.

Police said they analyzed genetic genealogy, matching evidence saved in a freezer to Coley McCraney, 45, of Dothan, Alabama. He may face a death penalty for murder and rape.

I understand the situation in Santa Monica very well, and it applies to any place near the ocean. Short term rentals tend to become commercial opportunities for the people listing them, and they attract a steady stream of outsiders who piss on the neighborhood, sometimes literally. Quite a few are for weekend parties or one-nighters, then there's a constant noise and parking issue too. They also create scarcities in long term rentals or home sales, and drive up the price of housing.

Other "digital disruption" businesses are also more detrimental near the beach. Santa Monica has had a huge problem with the non-docking scooters, which threatened to take over at one point. There was a death a few days back when someone hit one that darted in front of their car, then fled the scene a la hit and run.

One one level, it serves Santa Monica right for basing its economy on "Silicon Beach" and "digital disruption," but that doesn't make it any better.

Radovan Karadzic Gets Life As Hague Court Upholds Genocide Conviction

Appeals judges of the U.N. War Crimes Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia have upheld Radovan Karadzic's conviction for genocide in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre that claimed the lives of some 8,000 Muslim men and boys.

They also ruled that the 40-year sentence of Karadzic handed down in the first trial, in 2016, was too light given the gravity of the crimes.

New Zealand PM announces ban on semi-automatic weapons and assault rifles - CBS

Quote:
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced Thursday all assault weapons and "military-style automatic weapons" would be banned in the wake of last week's mosque shootings in Christchurch that left 50 people dead. Ardern said she expects the new law to be in place by April 11 and buy-back programs will be put in place for banned weapons.

Ardern said the shooting suspect had purchased his weapons legally and a "simple online purchase" of 30-round magazines had enhanced their capacity.

"We're taking out of circulation the guns that can be modified that way and are designed essentially to take lives," Ardern said in a press conference.

Within hours of the deadly attack, Ardern said the country's gun laws would change. It was the country's deadliest shooting since 1990.

Southern Poverty Law Center President Richard Cohen to step down

Southern Poverty Law Center President Richard Cohen said in a statement Friday he has asked the board of the troubled organization to "to immediately launch a search for an interim president in order to give the organization the best chance to heal," and took responsibility for problems that have swept out the senior leadership of the group in just a week.

Cohen, who has worked at the SPLC since 1986 and served as president since 2003, said in the statement that "we'll emerge stronger" after an audit of the organization's practices by Tina Tchen, a former White House official and Chicago-based lawyer.
