It was bound to happen.
I'm so old I remember the Five and Dime. There was also TG&Y, which we referred to as "Turtles, Girdles and Yo-Yos".
What's the future? The "Five-Spot"? Or even the "Century Store" where everything's a hundred bucks?
Dollar Tree no longer selling items for a dollar.
Re: Dollar Tree no longer selling items for a dollar.
I remember candies at the “Community Store” that were 2 for a penny.

I remember F.W. Woolworths, Ben Franklin stores, the small Five-and-Dime stores, and the one we had here called Coromart. My dad was stationed at NAS Memphis and there was a Ben Franklin store about a half-mile away from the base. We'd walk to the very back part of base housing, where the base's chain link fence was, and someone had dug a hole under the fence where we could scoot under and walk the half-mile to spend our allowance on candy and comics.
We had a store in Coronado that fit the description of a five-and-dime. The aisles were very narrow and the shelves high and full of everything, sometimes in a state of disarray. But, if you needed something, chances are they had it. The store closed in 1996 and has stood vacant ever since. Vons grocery recently, after many years of negotiating with the owners of the empty building, signed a long-term lease with the owners to expand the store into the old Coromart building giving them an additional 5,500 sqft of retail space.

We had five and dimes, and others of that ilk like TG&Y.
Anyone remember Western Auto? We shopped there a lot.

Five and Dime?
Penny Candy?
Ben Franklin?
Jesus. How old are we?
I remember all of these things fondly as well.

Someone once told me I was old enough to remember when Christ was a corporal. My retort to him was "Who do think recommended him for corporal?"
I make no bones about being 71 so my memory of things happening in the 50s and 60s is still clear. Those were my formative years so a lot of what happened back then was imprinted on me. As I got older, I was able to decide which things were more memorable and which were less. Kind of like rank ordering of memories. Would I like to have been born in the 80s or 90s instead of 1950? No!

Never take the names of these stores TOO seriously.
There are things in "Five Below" that cost more than $5 too.
The cashier will tell you - it just means "most" things are less than $5.

There's an old saying, 'You get what you pay for" meaning the cheap the price the cheaper the quality. I've bought things from The Dollar Store but quality wasn't what I was looking for. What I bought was a couple of binder for $1 each whereas Office Depot was selling them for a couple of buck each. I tend to look at The Dollar Store as the swap meet of retail store.
