It was only a matter of time. LA gets an earthquake that size pretty much once a year, but in LA the stores don't stack stuff all the way to the ceiling. There's a positive correlation between earthquakes and eclipses due to tidal forces. One of LA's biggest was a few hours after a lunar eclipse.

NOAA predicts hotter temperatures for May through July for all states but the Dakotas.
You may want to clean out the kiddie pool and dust off the patio furniture early this year. We’re in for a hot start to summer, according to a national weather outlook released Thursday by the National Weather Service.
All but two states on the new national forecast map are show in shades of orange and red. The darker the color, the more likely an area is to see above-average temperatures between May and July this year.
The highest probabilities of an extra-hot start to summer are found in the Northeast, Washington state, New Mexico, south Texas and southern Florida.

The primary driver this year seems to be an anticipated El Nino/La Nina switch in the Southern Oscillation. Those are tricky and unpredictable. My own experience suggests that the results will either be spectacular or practically nonexistent. There seems to be no intermediate case here.

Look for shooting stars this weekend: Lyrid meteor shower will light up sky. What to know.
There are all sorts of neat things going on in the sky, and there are different ways of seeing them.
This week, there is a five-planet alignment happening but the other event occurring is what's called a Lyrid meteor shower.

Big wind storm in Paris knocks the blades off the Moulin Rouge windmill.
The falling blades took out some of the neon sign, so it now says, " LIN ROUGE."
They're hoping to have it fixed in time for the Olympics in two months.

Tornadoes destroy homes in Nebraska as severe storms tear across Midwest
A tornado plowed through suburban Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday, damaging hundreds of homes and other structures as it tore for miles along farmland and into subdivisions. Some injuries were reported but there were no immediate reports that anyone was killed.

Re: EARTH....
Red sky at night, Elon's delight.
SpaceX isn't the only company launching thousands of satellites into low earth orbit, but it gets all the publicity. Lately, there have been reports of a strange red glow in the sky in the evening hours. It might get confused with aurora, but it's most prevalent in latitudes that rarely get that. Turns out that the cause is discharge of various gases from the almost daily launches of huge boosters by commercial space companies all competing with SpaceX to participate in the switch from cell towers to space comm that all the phone and data service providers can't wait to control.
The future does not look good. The extreme case is that all this shit dumped into orbit might short out the Earth's magnetic field. Nothing's certain on that yet, but the projected worse case scenario includes human extinction.
For a more down to Earth consequence, consider the new US TV standard. It's still in work, but the draft proposals basically hand all communication off to our favorite media and telecom conglomerates. No more free-to-air media AT ALL. No more home DVRs. All streaming, all the time. Any time you watch anything it's ka-CHING time. No more broadcasting whatsoever except from space and for money, meter's ticking, AND still with commercials.
This is a long way from becoming law, but I have seen the future and it costs like you wouldn't believe. They'll have to recoup from all that investment in space comm, and guess who gets handed the tab.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-lin ... e-68908558
The photo does not give an idea of its actual size. It's a very interesting object, made of thick metal, and having little balls on the outside that make it stable in any position. The surfaces have different sized holes. My own hunch is that it looks like something that would be used for a game of chance.Richard Parker, secretary of the Norton Disney History and Archaeology Group, said it was a "privilege to have handled" the object, thought to have been buried about 1,700 years ago.
However, he said: "Despite all the research that has gone into our dodecahedron, and others like it, we are no closer to finding out exactly what it is and what it might have been used for.
"The imagination races when thinking about what the Romans may have used it for. Magic, rituals or religion - we perhaps may never know.

I saw something that looks a lot like that object on one of the history-style programs. Their take on it was it was used by soldiers to weave gloves and socks. It might be that or something else altogether.ZoWie wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2024 12:54 pm British dig unearths mysterious dodecahedron:

He missed a chance to be the first Black astronaut. Now, at 90, he's going into space
Edward J. Dwight Jr. has waited a long time for his ride into space.
In the 1960s, he seemed poised to become America's first Black astronaut. That dream was never realized. Now, at age 90, he's about to finally get his shot, aboard a Blue Origin rocket.

Re: EARTH....
That is a good guess.
I remember years ago reading that if we would all vanish immediately then our planet discovered by aliens. That they would probably think McDonald's was some sort of religious shrine.
I would love to know what that is. Maybe a training tool for teaching whatever they used for welding back then.
The possibilities are endless.

There was a funny story decades ago in the Reader's Digest about how in 1,000 years archeologists are uncovering a motel destroyed by a nuclear war. Among the things they found was a large box (TV) which people worshiped at, an unusual piece of jewelry (toilet seat) around the neck of a skeleton, and other things. The story reminds us that one or two thousand years ago, there were a lot of object that were common but which we have no clue today as to what they were used for.
If it's ever found out we'll probably say that was clever of them.I would love to know what that is. Maybe a training tool for teaching whatever they used for welding back then.

I think it was on an early episode of The Twilight Zone where they had aliens trying to figure out what TV and Stereo was.
