Disney World reaches deal with union on minimum $18 hourly wage

Unions for service workers at Walt Disney World reached a tentative deal with the company on Thursday that would raise the starting minimum wage from $15 to $18 an hour by the end of the year in a pact that could set the basement for starting pay throughout central Florida’s sprawling tourism industry.

Disney World service workers who are in the six unions that make up the Service Trades Council Union coalition planned to vote next Wednesday on the contract proposal after rejecting an earlier offer that fell short of the $18 hourly minimum wage last month. The agreement covers around 45,000 service workers at the Disney
theme park resort outside Orlando. Workers could see their hourly wages rise between $5.50 and $8.60 by the end of the five-year contract if it’s approved, union leaders said.

Key Fed inflation gauge rose 0.3% in February, less than expected

An inflation gauge the Federal Reserve follows closely rose slightly less than anticipated in February, providing some hope that interest rate hikes are helping ease price increases.

The personal consumption expenditures price index excluding food and energy increased 0.3% for the month, the Commerce Department reported Friday. That was below the 0.4% Dow Jones estimate and lower than the 0.5% January increase.

"Bootstrapped": Alissa Quart on Liberating Ourselves from the Myth of the American Dream
We speak with journalist Alissa Quart, executive director of the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, about her new book, _Bootstrapped: Liberating Ourselves from the American Dream_, which examines myths about individualism and self-reliance that underpin the U.S. economy and the inequality it fosters.

She says a focus on succeeding through hard work obscures the degree to which many rich and powerful people have benefited from social support, resulting in a cycle of "shame and blame" for those who fall short.

Factory explosion survivor, on fire, fell into chocolate vat
A woman pulled alive from the rubble of a Pennsylvania chocolate factory after an explosion that killed seven co-workers says flames had engulfed the building, and her arm, when the floor gave way beneath her. That might have been the end, if she hadn’t fallen into a vat of liquid chocolate.

The dark liquid extinguished her blazing arm, but Patricia Borges wound up breaking her collarbone and both of her heels. She would spend the next nine hours screaming for help and waiting for rescue as firefighters battled the inferno and choppers thumped overhead at the R.M. Palmer Co. factory.

“When I began to burn, I thought it was the end for me,” Borges, 50, told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview from her hospital bed in West Reading, Pennsylvania, just minutes from the chocolate factory where she worked as a machine operator. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board interviewed Borges on Friday, according to her family......

........Speaking in Spanish over videoconference, her eyes bruised and her burned right arm heavily bandaged, Borges recounted her terrifying brush with death.

The factory was getting ready for a product switch that day, so instead of running a candy-wrapping machine as usual, she was helping to clean.

At 4:30 p.m., Borges told the AP, she smelled natural gas. It was strong and nauseated her. Borges and her co-workers approached their supervisor, asking "what was going to be done, if we were going to be evacuated," she recalled.

Borges said the supervisor noted someone higher up would have to make that decision. So she got back to work.

Just before 5 p.m., the two-story brick building exploded.

Borges, who'd been on a ladder, was thrown to the ground. She heard screaming. There was fire everywhere, and the flames quickly overtook her. “I asked God why he was giving me such a horrible death," she said. “I asked him to save me, that I didn’t want to die in the fire.”

Private payrolls rose by 145,000 in March, well below expectations, ADP says

Private sector hiring decelerated in March, flashing another potential sign that U.S. economic growth is heading for a sharp slowdown or recession, payroll processing firm ADP reported Wednesday.

Company payrolls rose by just 145,000 for the month, down from an upwardly revised 261,000 in February and below the Dow Jones estimate for 210,000.

US Jobless Claims Show Emerging Cracks in a Strong Labor Market

Applications for US unemployment benefits last week signaled that the labor market still remains relatively strong, even though data revisions indicate some emerging signs of softening.

Initial unemployment claims were 228,000 in the week ended April 1, Labor Department data showed Thursday. For the week before that, the government revised the numbers up by 48,000 to 246,000, likely explaining why the latest reading exceeded almost all economists’ estimates. This report included updated seasonal factors going back to 2018.

Jobs report: US economy adds 236,000 jobs in March, unemployment rate falls to 3.5%

The March jobs report showed hiring slowed last month, though the U.S. labor market will likely keep pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates in its efforts to slow inflation.

The U.S. economy added 236,000 jobs last month while the unemployment rate fell to 3.5% from 3.6% the prior month, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released Friday showed.

IMF cuts GDP forecasts, says global economy heading for weakest growth since 1990

The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday released its weakest global growth expectations for the medium term in more than 30 years.

The D.C.-based institution said that five years from now, global growth is expected to be around 3% — the lowest medium-term forecast in an IMF World Economic Outlook since 1990.

Exclusive: Old National Bank CEO on the SVB fallout's impact on regional banks

Old National Bank CEO Jim Ryan discusses how his bank is doing in the wake of the Silicon Valley Bank collapse.
Old National to buy back $200 million in stock
Old National Bank made a profit of $414.2 million last year or $1.50 per share in 2022. In the fourth quarter, it brought in $196.7 million in profit, earning 67 cents per share.

It's the successor of Chicago-based First Midwest Bank, which gained a large footprint in Northwest Indiana after acquiring Bank Calumet and Standard Bank and Trust before vanishing from the banking scene after an acquisition by a larger bank.

Following the merger, Old National Bank is now the sixth largest bank in the Midwest with $47 billion in assets and $28 million in assets under management. It ranks among the top 35 banks headquartered in the United States by asset size......
Old National Bank hit with federal complaint alleging discrimination
According to a federal complaint against Old National Bank, only 45 of its over 2,550 mortgage loans between 2019 and 2020 went to Black borrowers.

“We went through their numbers with them and the individuals at least that I met with did acknowledge that their data was not where it needed to be,” said Amy Nelson, the executive director of the Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana.

Two maps provided by the organization show the number of loans made to Black borrowers over a two year period compared to loans made to white customers during the same time.

The practice is called red lining, which means keeping people of color inside certain geographical areas by limiting or outright refusing mortgages to Black people to buy homes in what are considered white neighborhoods......

....The federal complaint filed by the Fair Housing Center also says that Old National Bank deliberately closed branches in predominantly Black areas to focus their residential lending to white neighborhoods.

“In 2010, they had 53 branches across the Indianapolis metropolitan area. By 2020, they were down to 21. In 2010, they 27 branches in Marion County. By 2020, it was nine, and those branches are in majority white areas,” said Nelson.......

Nashville Walgreens worker shoots pregnant shoplifting suspect, forcing emergency C-Section
A 24-year-old woman is in critical condition and required an emergency cesarean section after she was shot by a Nashville Walgreens employee during a confrontation over stolen merchandise.

The shooting took place just before 8 p.m. in the parking lot of the store in East Nashville, less than four miles northeast of downtown, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department......

......The incident began when a Walgreens employee told their 21-year-old team leader that two women were stealing items from the store, police said.

The team leader told police he saw the pair placing items into a store cart and into a large over-the-shoulder bag. He said he then began recording the suspects with his cell phone and followed them outside after they left the store without paying for the items.

As the pair began placing items into the trunk of their car, police said the team leader made his way to the rear side of the vehicle. At that point, he said, one of the suspected shoplifters pulled a can of mace and began spraying it at him.

"(The employee) said he then pulled his semi-automatic pistol and began shooting, saying he was in fear and didn’t know if they were armed," police wrote in press release......

Rutgers, unions announce agreement, classes to resume

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers University and union representatives have announced an agreement on a framework for new contracts with several faculty unions, allowing a halt to a five-day strike that was the first such job action in the 257-year history of New Jersey’s flagship university,

Rutgers said early Saturday that the agreement on the framework on economic issues was reached late Friday night with the aid of Gov. Phil Murphy, and closure on that framework “will allow our 67,000 students to resume their studies and pursue their academic degrees.”

Indiana lawmakers advance controversial “union-busting” bill denounced by Hoosier teachers

Indiana lawmakers are one step closer to advancing a contentious bill to the governor’s desk that has been decried by the state’s teachers unions as “unnecessary” and “union-busting.”

The House voted 63-36 Monday — with seven GOP legislators opposed — to send the proposal back to the opposite chamber for final approval. The bill barely passed the Senate earlier this session after facing bipartisan opposition.

Colin Kaepernick to pay for autopsy of inmate who died in insect-infested jail cell
Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick will pay for the autopsy of a man who died in an insect-infested jail cell in Georgia, national civil rights attorney Ben Crump said.

Crump made the disclosure Thursday during a news conference outside the Fulton County Jail, where Lashawn Thompson was incarcerated when he died in September at the age of 35.

Family members say Thompson was eaten alive by bed bugs.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner did not immediately respond to a request for the report on Thompson’s autopsy findings. But the Washington Post reported it said Thompson had an “extremely severe” infestation of small insects across his body but that his cause of death was undetermined.....

....Kaepernick last year announced last year an initiative to pay for second autopsies for family members of anyone whose death is "police-related."

Crump said, “We want to thank Colin Kaepernick for helping [Thompson’s] family get to the truth,” according to the Washington Post.......

German government, unions reach pay deal for public workers

BERLIN (AP) — German government officials and labor unions have reached a pay deal for more than 2.5 million public-sector workers, ending a lengthy dispute and heading off the possibility of disruptive all-out strikes.

The ver.di union had pressed for hefty raises as Germany, like many other countries, grapples with high inflation. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said as the deal was announced around midnight Sunday that “we accommodated the unions as far as we could responsibly do in a difficult budget situation.”

AFGE Wins Backpay, Restored Leave for Over a Thousand VA Employees in Oregon

In a victory for AFGE and employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs Roseburg Healthcare System in Oregon, an arbitrator ordered the VA to restore all vacation and sick leave and reimburse all leave without pay for employees who took time off or were told to stay home due to COVID-19. The arbitrator found that the agency should have offered employees other leave options available through various laws passed in response to the pandemic.

At the beginning of the outbreak, the VA screened workers as they entered the facility and sent them home if they had COVID-19 symptoms or had been exposed to the virus. The agency required that employees use their personal leave, including those who cared for children whose school or childcare facility was closed due to COVID. Many were marked AWOL because they got sick and ran out of personal leave.

Tesla broke U.S. labor law by silencing workers, official rules

April 26 (Reuters) - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) supervisors at a Florida service center violated U.S. labor law by telling employees not to discuss pay and other working conditions or bring complaints to higher level managers, a U.S. labor board official has ruled.

Managers at the Orlando repair shop illegally silenced workers in 2021 after some of them complained that new hires were being paid more, according to the decision issued Tuesday by National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Administrative Law Judge Michael Rosas.

We can’t be overly giddy or celebratory about record low unemployment in an economy where people who work full-time don’t earn enough to survive.

Remember, slavery was full employment. Today, low unemployment w/ high rates of low wages is not a healthy economy.

This is why the Biden-Harris admin must remain committed to their orginal vision & fight for the living wages that 2 Democrats & 50 Republicans killed in the Senate.
Yea cant be good economy with predatory, abusive, hostile and dangerous practices by employers across the board. If you want to see the future look at how people are treated by employers and by the economic system across the country. so far it dont look good.

https://twitter.com/railroadworkers/sta ... 5455055873
1/8 Joe Biden has recently announced his campaign for re-election, but we must not overlook the crucial labor issues his administration has ignored.

2/8 For too long, politicians have prioritized the interests of Wall Street and big business over the needs of hardworking railroad workers. The Railway Labor Act, for example, has been used by the government to prevent us from striking and achieving better working conditions.

3/8 Unfortunately, this is not just a Biden problem but a longstanding issue that has affected railroad workers under previous administrations of both political parties.
Changing the way people are treated for the better changes the future for the better.

U.S. GDP rose at a 1.1% pace in the first quarter as signs build that the economy is slowing

Growth in the U.S. slowed considerably during the first three months of the year as interest rate increases and inflation took hold of an economy largely expected to decelerate even further ahead.

Gross domestic product, a measure of all goods and services produced for the period, rose at a 1.1% annualized pace in the first quarter, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been expecting growth of 2%.
