On August 18, 2022, U.S. District Judge Sheryl H. Lipman of the District Court of Western Tennessee issued an injunction requiring Starbucks to reinstate seven unlawfully fired workers, rescind and expunge unlawful discipline issued to an employee, post the Court’s Order and translations in other languages, and cease and desist from unlawful activities.

The injunction was issued based on a petition for temporary injunctive relief filed by Region 15 Regional Director Kathleen McKinney in May. Section 10(j) of the National Labor Relations Act authorizes the National Labor Relations Board to seek injunctions against employers and unions in federal district courts to stop unfair labor practices where, due to the passage of time, the normal Board processes are likely to be inadequate to effectively remedy the alleged violations.

University of Michigan Health nurses fight for lower nurse-to-patient ratios
.....“Nurses are leaving because they feel stressed, burned out and we are adding to their workload,” said Adam Paulsen, a Pediatric ICU nurse with University of Michigan Health.

Paulsen says the burden of unfilled jobs, not just in nursing but support roles, is falling on nurses.

“I don’t have enough respiratory therapists to help me. I don’t have enough nurse techs to help me. I don’t have enough nurses to help me,” said Paulsen.

The Michigan Nurses Union and University of Michigan Health are in the middle of a contentious contract fight that led to a lawsuit against University of Michigan Health.

He says many think the fight is over wages, but the biggest issue in his opinion a workload with patient safety in mind. He and other nurses are demanding lower nurse-to-patient ratios......

-Employment is now 240,000 higher than pre-pandemic

-Men have fully recovered all job losses from pandemic.
(Women are close, but still ~264,000 off)

-Manufacturing added 461,000 jobs in past year

New York City Sues Starbucks for Firing Union Organizer.
A New York City agency overseeing workplace affairs said on Friday it sued Starbucks Corp because the coffee chain illegally fired a longtime barista and union organizer shortly after employees in his store voted to join a union.

The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection called the case on behalf of Austin Locke, a Starbucks employee for 5-3/4 years, the city's first for violating "just cause" protections under a 2017 law meant to protect fast-food workers.

The Fair Workweek Law prohibits fast-food employers from firing or laying off workers, or reducing their hours by more than 15%, without just cause or legitimate economic reasons.

According to a petition filed with the city's Office of Administrative Trails and Hearings, Starbucks fired Locke on July 5, one month after employees in his store in the Astoria section of the borough of Queens decided to unionize.

Former CVS nurse sues chain, saying it fired her over abortion stance

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — A nurse practitioner from northern Virginia sued CVS Health on Wednesday, saying she was fired for refusing to provide abortion-inducing drugs at its MinuteClinic medical facilities.

In the lawsuit, Paige Casey said CVS had for years granted her a religious accommodation that allowed her to opt out of prescribing or providing the drugs and certain contraceptives without incident.

Fed: Interest rates will climb 'until the job is done'
.....On Thursday, Powell said the Fed remains "strongly committed" to fighting inflation, and reassured Americans the central bank will continue to raise interest rates "until the job is done.".....
I dont understand how does higher interest rates fight against price gouging by corporate and big businesspeople, who are exempt from paying taxes, and at the same time are constantly awarded slush fund grants to help them weather any storm that comes their way.

St. Louis County officers to move to 12-hour shifts starting Christmas day to combat officer shortage
“For quite some time, our authorized numbers have made it difficult to maintain adequate manpower in our patrol areas. For these and other reasons, I along with the Executive Command Staff began looking into 12-hour shifts to better man our precincts. We initiated a pilot program; working 12 hour shifts in the North County and West County precincts.
So the police executives dont have to give in to the needs of the public and can attack their own workforce to weaken compromise them. Working officers a day and a half will grind away even more at the overall numbers in increased mistakes and stress and exhaustion frustration anger. Reducing work life family balance will further worsen all those things. Bad for public safety as well.

Inflation rose 0.1% in August even with sharp drop in gas prices

Inflation rose more than expected in August as rising shelter and food costs offset a drop in gas prices, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday.

The consumer price index, which tracks a broad swath of goods and services, increased 0.1% for the month and 8.3% over the past year. Excluding volatile food and energy costs, CPI rose 0.6% from July and 6.3% from the same month in 2021.

Factory Jobs Are Booming Like It’s the 1970s

U.S. manufacturing is experiencing a rebound, with companies adding workers amid high consumer demand for products.

Data suggest that the rebound is largely a product of the unique circumstances of the pandemic recession and recovery. Covid-19 crimped global supply chains, making domestic manufacturing more attractive to some companies. Federal stimulus spending helped to power a shift in Americans’ buying habits away from services like travel and restaurants and toward goods like cars and sofas, helping domestic factory production — and with it, job growth — to bounce back much faster than it did in the previous two recessions.

Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen said that the recovery of manufacturing jobs was a result of the unique nature of the recession, which was induced by the pandemic, and the robust federal response, including legislation like the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan of 2021.

We had a huge shift away from services and into goods that spurred production and manufacturing and very rapid recovery in the U.S. economy,” Ms. Yellen told reporters during a trip to Detroit this month. The support for local economies and small businesses included in Mr. Biden’s rescue plan, she said, “has been tremendously helpful in restoring the health of the job market and given the shifting in spending patterns, I think that’s been to the benefit of manufacturing.”

American manufacturers, like many industries, have struggled to find raw materials, component parts and skilled workers. And yet, they have continued to create jobs at a rate that has surprised even some longtime promoters of American factory employment.

Mexico’s President Reaches Agreement With Companies To Maintain Basic Food Prices

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Friday he had reached an agreement with companies to maintain prices of basic food items, as inflation continues to tick up.

It was a unanimous decision, he said during a regular news conference, without confirming the final number of companies involved but noting that they included producers and distributors of corn, chicken, eggs, and beef.

Board Updates Considerations for Directing Mail-Ballot Elections

Today, the Board issued a decision in Starbucks Corporation, updating the considerations that guide Regional Directors in exercising their discretion in determining whether an election should be conducted by mail ballot, as opposed to an in-person manual-ballot election, due to COVID-19-related conditions.

The decision, based on an election held in a Starbucks coffee shop in Seattle, modified one of the six factors in the Board’s 2020 decision in Aspirus Keweenaw. Previously, Aspirus factor 2 permitted Regional Directors the discretion to direct mail-ballot elections based on either a recent increase in new confirmed COVID-19 cases or recent testing positivity rates in the county encompassing the employer’s facility, using data collected primarily by state and local governments. Today’s decision changes factor 2, which now allows Regional Directors the discretion to order a mail-ballot election in communities where the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has determined that the risk of COVID-19 transmission in a particular community is “high,” based on the CDC’s county-based community level tracker. The remaining five factors of Aspirus remain the same.
