How $1.8 Billion in Unregulated Digital Ads Could Sway Midterms

As the Mueller investigation proceeds, stories about Russian meddling in the 2016 election have often been at the top of the news cycle. It is indeed a scary story. It shows how undisclosed powerful actors, guided entirely by self-interest, can use duplicitous online ads to try and sway an election.

Those making these ads can customize their audiences by using frighteningly specific tools to target certain demographics. This enables them to microtarget users, thanks in large part to Facebook’s mountain of data. Between microtargeting and Facebook’s algorithms (which are proprietary and not well understood), no two people see the same digital ads.

Editorial: Florida's race for governor highlights flaws in campaign finance system

This year’s race for governor in Florida is on pace for an all-time record in spending, thanks in part to six- and seven-figure contributions from out-of-state moguls, the state’s most powerful corporations, business lobbies and three candidates themselves — a billionaire and two millionaires.

Is this really the best way to choose Florida’s top public servant?

A good first step

Democratic Star Ocasio-Cortez Proposes 'Yacht Inside Yacht' Rule for Republicans

Democratic star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rolled out a new rule for Republicans on Tuesday, and her supporters were all about it.

Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old Democratic congressional candidate for New York's 14th district, tweeted that anyone who was "cool with" the pricey GOP tax cuts last year could not complain about calls for government-provided universal healthcare. After all, she said, the money went to "freebies for people with yachts that have tiny yachts inside."

Hold IDC accountable for campaign finance law violations

Our campaign finance laws are meaningless unless there are real consequences for egregious violations like this one. At issue is an agreement the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC), the New York Senate's now-defunct group of Democratic defectors, struck with the Independence Party in 2016. Under that agreement, IDC leadership took the helm of the Senate Independence Campaign Committee (SICC) accounts and used that committee to raise and disburse over $800,000 of corporate money they would have otherwise been prohibited from accessing. The state Supreme Court recently concluded that this arrangement violated campaign finance law. Now it's time for the state Board of Elections' chief enforcement counsel, Risa Sugarman, to ensure this scheme doesn't happen again.

Sidebar: The Lobbyist Impact

The Ohio Attorney General’s office disputes the notion that campaign contributions influence how it awards debt collection work. But another factor – hiring a lobbyist – has had a big impact.

The Ohio Center for Investigative Journalism, or Eye On Ohio, looked at six collections firms that hired lobbyists to represent them before Attorney General Mike DeWine. Over his first six years in office, the average annual receipts of four firms jumped between 61 and 349 percent after hiring a lobbyist. Two firms with no collections contracts before hiring a lobbyist jumped from zero to average payouts of $722,006 and $924,606 per year.

Is Governor Cuomo doing all he can to combat corruption in Albany?

NEW YORK (WABC) -- New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, (D) on Friday was peppered with questions by reporters after the former head of SUNY Poly and three developers were convicted of bid-rigging in the governor's "Buffalo Billion" economic development.

Governor Cuomo said, "I don't know what I could have done differently to prevent this situation." His primary rival, Cynthia Nixon, said it was another example of Albany corruption. Nixon said, "We can't clean up Albany until we clean out who is in the Governor's mansion."

I thought railroads were doing at pretty good job. And there are trucks. How many different ways do those Republicans think people need?

New Zealand is the world's least corrupt nation

Transparency International on Wednesday published its latest Corruption Perceptions Index, a global ranking of fairness around the world.

The ranking of 180 countries is based on the level of public sector corruption in 2017, according to businesspeople, journalists, and civic organisations.

Democrats Take Aim at ‘Dark Money’ With Eye on Midterms

Congressional Democrats are taking another run at regulating so-called dark money in politics with a bill that would require groups that spend money to influence elections to disclose the source of their funds -- an issue the lawmakers plan to take beyond Capitol Hill and into the fall campaign.

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and all 48 of his Democratic colleagues introduced the measure Wednesday. A House version, sponsored by Representative David Cicilline, also of Rhode Island, garnered 147 supporters.

New Emails Show Link Between Utah Governor's Office And Lobbyist On EPA Air Quality Rule

The Environmental Protection Agency’s Scott Pruitt may have resigned but the controversies continue. A recently disclosed collection of emails between the EPA, an oil and gas lobbyist and at least one elected official in Utah are causing concern.

Politico first reported on the emails, which came from a 2017 freedom of information lawsuit between the Sierra Club and the EPA.

Get To Know Andrew Wheeler, Ex-Coal Lobbyist With Inside Track To Lead EPA

After months spent staggering beneath the weight of roughly a dozen official ethics probes, mounting bipartisan criticism and one used mattress, Scott Pruitt decided to lay down his mantle as chief of the Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday. But his leadership role didn't stay vacant long.

In the very same pair of tweets announcing Pruitt's departure, President Trump named the man who would be taking his place — for now, at least: Andrew Wheeler, the longtime Washington insider confirmed by the Senate as Pruitt's deputy in April. Come Monday, Wheeler will be the agency's acting chief.

How Justice Kennedy’s Successor Will Wreak Havoc on Voting Rights and American Democracy

Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced his retirement from the Supreme Court last week, was certainly the “swing justice” in key cases on major issues from abortion to gay rights. But when it came to election law, Justice Kennedy didn’t swing: He consistently sided with conservatives and the Republican Party on the most important cases of the day. Still, I fully expect issues from voting rights to campaign finance to get far worse when President Trump appoints Kennedy’s successor in the mold of Justice Antonin Scalia.

Kennedy was the author or in the majority in three of the worst election law cases the court decided in the last two generations: Bush v. Gore (2000), Citizens United v. FEC (2010), and Shelby County v. Holder (2013). It’s worth looking back at Kennedy’s bad voting rights decisions—and how much worse they could have been—when thinking about his replacement.

GOP fundraiser Broidy files lawsuit against former UN official

Top Republican fundraiser Elliott Broidy filed a lawsuit on Monday against a former senior United Nations official, accusing the official of being an unregistered agent of Qatar who worked to silence the GOP donor and other critics of the country.

In a court filing Monday, Broidy accused former U.N. Under-Secretary-General Jamal Benomar of acquiring stolen information including emails from his computer and sending them to U.S. news outlets in an effort to hurt him.

Calling all billionaires interested in saving democracy. Please invest in newspapers.

HELP DESPERATELY WANTED: Multi-billionaires willing to invest in the newspaper business — not for profit or personal promotion, but for the future of democracy.

Maybe your last name is Bezos, Omidyar, Buffett, Soros, Gates, Soon-Shiong. Maybe you're Laurene Powell Jobs, who just bought a majority stake in The Atlantic. It doesn’t matter. Local journalism needs your wallet, your generosity, your trust and your promise to not interfere.

Cuomo says NY corruption problems are being addressed

ALBANY, N.Y. -- A wave of corruption convictions and sentences is once again raising questions about a broader, corrupt culture that some believe permeates our state government.

Many of those questions land at the footsteps of Governor Andrew Cuomo.
