May 09, 2018
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Rising oil prices might cost you more money at the gas pump, but they're a boon for oil companies.

Crude oil climbed to its highest price since 2014 after President Trump vowed to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal. Iran is the world's fifth-largest oil producer, and American sanctions will choke off some of that supply.
The price of crude has been rising for more than two years, from $26 to $71 on Wednesday.
That helps oil company profits, and Wall Street has jumped back on the energy bandwagon.

Energy stocks are up 12% in the past month, the best in the S&P 500. And they're up 5% for the year, while the broader market is flat.

Sean Hannity’s Real Estate Empire Built Through Dealer Convicted for Fraud, Rigging Foreclosure Auctions---
by Andy Towle
April 24, 2018 | 9:50am

Yesterday we learned that Sean Hannity built a $90 million real estate empire facilitated by HUD loans overseen by Ben Carson which allowed his shell companies to purchase foreclosed properties.

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2018/ ... reclosures
Sean Hannity's real estate venture linked to fraudulent property dealer---
Michael Cohen case shines light on Sean Hannity’s property empire---

In 2012, a Shell company tied to the Fox News host bought homes through Jeff Brock, who was charged in 2016 with fraud and conspiracy for his role in a scheme to rig auctions on foreclosed properties...

https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/04 ... t-fox-news
... Michael knows real estate”—Hannity’s holdings, obtained via a series of shell companies, are considerable, according to records reviewed by The Guardian. Over the past decade, the companies, some of which have direct links to Hannity, have amassed more than 870 homes across seven states, ranging from low-income housing to luxury mansions, for a total of at least $90 million.
....
In 2016, he criticized Barack Obama for the rate of foreclosures in the U.S., saying that “millions more Americans [were] suffering under this president,” in part because their homes had been foreclosed on. Yet in 2013, he bought “dozens” of properties at a discounted rate after banks foreclosed on their owners. In 2014, companies linked to Hannity spent $22.7 million for two apartment complexes in Georgia located in high-poverty areas—the acquisition was financed in party by a $17.9 million mortgage, which Hannity received with assistance from the Department of Housing and Urban Development as part of the National Housing Act (N.H.A.), which protects investors from losses if borrowers default. Per The Guardian, Hannity’s working relationship with HUD has continued under Trump:

Late last month, Hannity’s mortgages were replaced with loans for $22.9m that were rewritten with Carson’s HUD and a new bank. There was no indication that Carson was personally involved in the process. Carson does, however, have the authority to allow Hannity from 2019 to convert the rental complexes into condominiums for sale, which could be lucrative for the television host.

Where Did Trump’s Cash Come From? — “Trump, Inc.” Podcast Extra---

We talk to the Washington Post’s David Fahrenthold and The New Yorker’s Adam Davidson about the big mystery around the Trump Organization’s $400 million in cash deals.

Last week, the Washington Post had an intriguing story: In the nine years before now-President Donald Trump announced his candidacy, his company paid $400 million in cash to buy a number of properties.

Real estate companies doing deals usually borrow money for the same reason that many homeowners take out mortgages: Leveraging your money — especially when the cost of borrowing is low, as it has been for a decade — makes your money go further.

The fact that Trump — the self-styled “king of debt” — didn’t do that in these deals has raised a number of big, basic questions, including how the Trump Organization had so much cash, and why it would use it to purchase properties in all cash.

groper is funneling laundered money thru his money losing golf courses.

https://www.rawstory.com/2018/05/pulitz ... f-courses/
Pulitzer-winning reporter flags mysterious revenue surges at Trump’s overseas golf courses--

Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporter David Fahrenthold on Friday raised questions about a mysterious surge in revenue that occurred over the past year at two of President Donald Trump’s overseas golf courses.

Writing on Twitter, Fahrenthold uses some recent financial disclosures from the Trump Organization to show that revenue at a Trump golf course in Ireland rose by 51 percent year-over-year from 2017 to 2018, while revenue at a Scottish Trump golf course surged by 87 percent year-over-year from 2017 to 2018.
...
What makes these two golf clubs notable is that Trump bought them both in 2014 as part of an all-cash transaction that totaled nearly $80 million
. David Geltner, a professor of real estate finance at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told the Washington Post last month that shelling out $80 million in cash for golf courses was highly unusual, as golf courses aren’t guaranteed money makers and developers typically like to spread around risk by bringing in creditors to lend money.

Additionally, James Dodson, a sports journalist who primarily writes about golf, told Boston-based radio station WBUR last year that Eric Trump told him in 2014 that the Trump Organization was not relying on American banks to fund its golf course purchases but was instead relying on Russian golf enthusiasts for cash.

Here's our story, btw, on those all-cash golf purchases, part of a massive $400M+ cash spending spree by @realdonaldtrump since '06 that defies real-estate practice.

https://www.rawstory.com/2018/05/muelle ... nk-report/
Mueller is following the money to Israeli social media firm that met with Trump Jr into a Cyprus bank: report--

Despite assurances by Trump surrogates like Rudy Giuliani that the Mueller probe is wrapping up, the investigation appears more sweeping than ever.

In 2017, the Guardian reported that investigators were looking into the financial history of a bank based in Cyprus, Greece. The bank, owned by two Lebanese nationals, was suspected of money laundering.

On Tuesday, Bloomberg reported that the same bank did business with PSY Group, an Israeli company whose founder reportedly met with Donald Trump Jr. ahead of the election. The company services include reaching target audiences with misleading information through web portals designed to look like news sites.

A lawyer for Donald Trump Jr. says he remembers the pitch meeting but denies making use of the company’s services.

Although originating in Tel Aviv, the company is headquartered in Cyprus, where as Bloomberg notes regulations around financial transactions are laxer.
It’s illegal for foreign entities to contribute anything of value to sway an American election.

Cohen’s business partner just made a plea deal with Mueller and is cooperating with investigators---

The misfortunes of President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen continue to pile up. The New York Times reports that his business partner, Evgeny A. Freidman—known as the taxi king—has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in exchange for a deal that would allow him to avoid jail time for tax fraud and grand larceny.

Meet the economist behind the One Percent’s stealth takeover of America--

While Americans grapple with Donald Trump’s chaotic presidency, we may be missing the key to changes that are taking place far beyond the level of mere politics. Once these changes are locked into place, there may be no going back.
..
.....a Tea Party-dominated Republican Party got control of both houses of the state legislature and began pushing through a radical program to suppress voter rights, decimate public services, and slash taxes on the wealthy that shocked a state long a beacon of southern moderation. Up to this point, the figure of James Buchanan flickered in her peripheral vision, but as she began to study his work closely, ....
The historian plunged in, and she read through [u]boxes and drawers full of papers that included personal correspondence between Buchanan and billionaire industrialist Charles Koch. That’s when she had an amazing realization: here was the intellectual linchpin of a stealth revolution currently in progress.

A Theory of Property Supremacy--
Buchanan, MacLean notes, was incensed at what he saw as a move toward socialism and deeply suspicious of any form of state action that channels resources to the public. Why should the increasingly powerful federal government be able to force the wealthy to pay for goods and programs that served ordinary citizens and the poor?

...In interview cited by MacLean, the economist observed that in the 1950s Americans commonly assumed that elected officials wanted to act in the public interest. Buchanan vehemently disagreed — that was a belief he wanted, as he put it, to “tear down.” His ideas developed into a theory that came to be known as “public choice.”

Buchanan’s view of human nature was distinctly dismal. Adam Smith saw human beings as self-interested and hungry for personal power and material comfort, but he also acknowledged social instincts like compassion and fairness. Buchanan, in contrast, insisted that people were primarily driven by venal self-interest. Crediting people with altruism or a desire to serve others was “romantic” fantasy: politicians and government workers were out for themselves, and so, for that matter, were teachers, doctors, and civil rights activists. They wanted to control others and wrest away their resources: “Each person seeks mastery over a world of slaves,” he wrote in his 1975 book, The Limits of Liberty.

Does that sound like your kindergarten teacher? It did to Buchanan.

The people who needed protection were property owners, and their rights could only be secured though constitutional limits to prevent the majority of voters from encroaching on them, an idea Buchanan lays out in works like Property as a Guarantor of Liberty (1993). MacLean observes that Buchanan saw society as a cutthroat realm of makers (entrepreneurs) constantly under siege by takers (everybody else) His own language was often more stark, warning the alleged “prey” of “parasites” and “predators” out to fleece them.

John C. Calhoun of South Carolina, senator and seventh vice president of the United States.
Calhoun was an intellectual and political powerhouse in the South from the 1820s until his death in 1850, expending his formidable energy to defend slavery. Calhoun, called the “Marx of the Master Class” by historian Richard Hofstadter, saw himself and his fellow southern oligarchs as victims of the majority. Therefore, as MacLean explains, he sought to create “constitutional gadgets” to constrict the operations of government.

Economists Tyler Cowen and Alexander Tabarrok, both of George Mason University, have noted the two men’s affinities, heralding Calhoun “a precursor of modern public choice theory” who “anticipates” Buchanan’s thinking. MacLean observes that both focused on how democracy constrains property owners and aimed for ways to restrict the latitude of voters. She argues out that unlike even the most property-friendly founders Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, Buchanan wanted a private governing elite of corporate power that was wholly released from public accountability. ...

MacLean describes how the economist developed a grand project to train operatives to staff institutions funded by like-minded tycoons, most significantly Charles Koch, ....Koch, whose mission was to save capitalists like himself from democracy, found the ultimate theoretical tool in the work of the southern economist. The historian writes that Koch preferred Buchanan to Milton Friedman and his “Chicago boys” because, she says, quoting a libertarian insider, they wanted “to make government work more efficiently when the true libertarian should be tearing it out at the root.”

With Koch’s money and enthusiasm, Buchanan’s academic school evolved into something much bigger. By the 1990s, Koch realized that Buchanan’s ideas — transmitted through stealth and deliberate deception, as MacLean amply documents — could help take government down through incremental assaults that the media would hardly notice. The tycoon knew that the project was extremely radical, even a “revolution” in governance, but he talked like a conservative to make his plans sound more palatable.

MacLean details how partnered with Koch, Buchanan’s outpost at George Mason University was able to connect libertarian economists with right-wing political actors and supporters of corporations like Shell Oil, Exxon, Ford, IBM, Chase Manhattan Bank, and General Motors. Together they could push economic ideas to public through media, promote new curricula for economics education, and court politicians in nearby Washington, D.C.
....MacLean recounts that Buchanan and his associate Henry Manne, a founding theorist of libertarian economic approaches to law, focused on such affronts to capitalists as environmentalism and public health and welfare, expressing eagerness to dismantle Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare as well as kill public education because it tended to foster community values. Feminism had to go, too: the scholars considered it a socialist project.

A World of Slaves
...the goal of these strategies is to radically alter power relations, weakening pro-public forces and enhancing the lobbying power and commitment of the corporations that take over public services and resources, thus advancing the plans to dismantle democracy and make way for a return to oligarchy. The majority will be held captive so that the wealthy can finally be free to do as they please, no matter how destructive.

Most Americans haven’t seen what’s coming.
...MacLean notes that when the Kochs’ control of the GOP kicked into high gear after the financial crisis of 2007-08, many were so stunned by the “shock-and-awe” tactics of shutting down government, destroying labor unions, and rolling back services that meet citizens’ basic necessities that few realized that many leading the charge had been trained in economics at Virginia institutions, especially George Mason University.
...
...the goal of these strategies is to radically alter power relations, weakening pro-public forces and enhancing the lobbying power and commitment of the corporations that take over public services and resources, thus advancing the plans to dismantle democracy and make way for a return to oligarchy. The majority will be held captive so that the wealthy can finally be free to do as they please, no matter how destructive.

....shrinking big government is not really the point. The oligarchs require a government with tremendous new powers so that they can bypass the will of the people. This, as MacLean points out, requires greatly expanding police powers “to control the resultant popular anger.” The spreading use of pre-emption by GOP-controlled state legislatures to suppress local progressive victories such as living wage ordinances is another example of the right’s aggressive use of state power.

Could these right-wing capitalists allow private companies to fill prisons with helpless citizens—or, more profitable still, right-less undocumented immigrants? They could, and have. Might they engineer a retirement crisis by moving Americans to inadequate 401(k)s? Done. Take away the rights of consumers and workers to bring grievances to court by making them sign forced arbitration agreements? Check. Gut public education to the point where ordinary people have such bleak prospects that they have no energy to fight back? Getting it done.

Would they even refuse children clean water? Actually, yes.

MacLean notes that in Flint, Michigan, Americans got a taste of what the emerging oligarchy will look like — it tastes like poisoned water. There, the Koch-funded Mackinac Center pushed for legislation that would allow the governor to take control of communities facing emergency and put unelected managers in charge. In Flint, one such manager switched the city’s water supply to a polluted river,...insured that the law was fortified by protections against lawsuits that poisoned inhabitants might bring. Tens of thousands of children were exposed to lead, ....

To many this sounds grotesquely inhumane, but it is a way of thinking that has deep roots in America. In Why I, Too, Am Not a Conservative (2005), Buchanan considers the charge of heartlessness made against the kind of classic liberal that he took himself to be. MacLean interprets his discussion to mean that people who “failed to foresee and save money for their future needs” are to be treated, as Buchanan put it, “as subordinate members of the species, akin to…animals who are dependent.’”

The rules of the game are now clear.
Research like MacLean’s provides hope that toxic ideas like Buchanan’s may finally begin to face public scrutiny. Yet at this very moment, the Kochs’ State Policy Network and the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a group that connects corporate agents to conservative lawmakers to produce legislation, are involved in projects that the Trump-obsessed media hardly notices, like pumping money into state judicial races. Their aim is to stack the legal deck against Americans in ways that MacLean argues may have even bigger effects than Citizens United, the 2010 Supreme Court ruling which unleashed unlimited corporate spending on American politics. The goal is to create a judiciary that will interpret the Constitution in favor of corporations and the wealthy in ways that Buchanan would have heartily approved.

“The United States is now at one of those historic forks in the road whose outcome will prove as fateful as those of the 1860s, the 1930s, and the 1960s,” writes MacLean. “To value liberty for the wealthy minority above all else and enshrine it in the nation’s governing rules, as Calhoun and Buchanan both called for and the Koch network is achieving, play by play, is to consent to an oligarchy in all but the outer husk of representative form.”

Nobody can say we weren’t warned.

Lies, China And Putin: Solving The Mystery Of Wilbur Ross' Missing Fortune--

In November 2017, Ross confirmed in writing to the federal Office of Government Ethics that he had divested everything he promised.

But that was not true. After weeks of investigation, Forbes found:

-- For most of last year, Ross served as secretary of commerce while maintaining stakes in companies co-owned by the Chinese government, a shipping firm tied to Vladimir Putin’s inner circle, a Cypriot bank reportedly caught up in the Robert Mueller investigation and a huge player in an industry Ross is now investigating. It’s hard to imagine a more radioactive portfolio for a cabinet member.

-- To this day, Ross’ family apparently continues to have an interest in these toxic holdings. Rather than dump them all, the commerce secretary sold some of his interests to Goldman Sachs—and, according to Ross himself, put others in a trust for his family members. He continued to deal with China, Russia and others while evidently knowing that his family’s interests were tied to those countries.

-- In addition, five days before reports surfaced last fall that Ross was connected to cronies of Vladimir Putin through a shipping firm called Navigator Holdings, the secretary of commerce, who likely knew about the reporting, shorted stock in the Kremlin-linked company, positioning himself to make money on the investment when share prices dropped.

Absurdly, maintaining all those conflicts of interest appears to be entirely legal—a reflection of ethics laws woefully unprepared for governing tycoons like Donald Trump and Wilbur Ross.

Trump Is Getting Away With the Biggest Scandal in American History
Witch hunt.
David Corn Jun. 5, 2018

But at the heart of the Russia scandal is the most fundamental issue for a democracy: the sanctity of elections.

An overseas enemy struck at the core of the republic—and it succeeded.

Trump and his minions helped and encouraged this attack by engaging in secret contacts with Moscow and publicly insisting no such assault was happening. This is far bigger than a bribe, a break-in, or a blow job. And, worse, the United States remains vulnerable to such a strike.

Yet the full impact of this scandal does not resonate in the daily coverage and discourse. In many ways, the media presents the Russia scandal mostly as a political threat to Trump, not as a serious threat to the nation. And many Americans, thanks to Trump and his allies, view it as a charade. All this shows how easy it is for disinformation and demagoguery to distort reality.
That is a tragedy for the United States. For Trump—and Putin—that is victory.

Listen to David Corn discuss this idea on last week’s episode of the Mother Jones Podcast:

What did corporate America do with that tax break? Buy record amounts of its own stock
The White House promised '70 percent' of the tax cut would go to workers. It didn't.

The Republican tax reform package that was supposed to raise wages and spur hiring has instead funded a record
stock buyback and dividend spree, benefiting investors and company executives over workers.

President Donald Trump signed the bill in December last year, saying the corporate tax cut would make it favorable for companies to
bring back into the U.S. cash stashed in foreign operations.

"More than 70 percent of this [tax cut] will be returned to workers," said White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders at a
January press conference after the bill came into effect. LIAR!

However, companies have instead used the extra cash to spend billions of dollars buying back their own stock, boosting the value of shares held by investors
.
Buybacks reduce the number of shares on the market, immediately increasing the value of the shares that investors already hold.

Over the past year, S&P 500 companies have given their shareholders a record $1 trillion in the form
of buybacks and dividends,
led by Apple, Cisco Systems, and other technology giants.

Stock repurchases hit nearly $190 billion in the first quarter for the S&P 500, according to preliminary results from S&P Dow Jones Indices.
The last time that record was set was just before the Great Recession, when companies bought up almost $172 billion of buybacks.

As Trump’s China Tariffs Kick In, US Farmers Watch Prices Slide---
Growers in corn and soybean country face billions of dollars in losses.
---
Jul. 6, 2018

The current slide comes at a precipitous time for US farmers. They have about 179 million acres of the two crops growing in their fields—a combined land mass equal to nearly two Californias, and just 1 percent less than last year’s plantings. To make a profit on these crops, farmers will have to make at least $4 per bushel on corn and $10.05 on soybeans for the 2018 harvest, a University of Illinois analysis found. Currently, the two commodities fetch $3.43 and $8.40, respectively.

Vast portions of last years’ bumper soybean and corn harvest remain unsold. :o :o

Meanwhile, vast portions of last years’ bumper harvest remain unsold. Soybean farmers churned out a record 4.39 billion bushels in 2017—and more than a quarter of the harvest is still sitting in grain bins waiting for a buyer, according to figures recently released by the US Department of Agriculture. Meanwhile, farmers and grain elevators had to stockpile 5.31 billion bushels of corn, more than a third of last year’s harvest.

just think...cattle and horses and sundry livestock once ate much of this corn.
but alas THEY ARE ALL GONE NOW TOO. THEY WENT WITH COUNTRYWIDE.

‘Our pleas have fallen on deaf ears’: Michigan farmers who supported Trump blast tariffs destroying their livelihoods--

In an interview with farmers in Michigan who are seeing the agricultural tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump possibly destroy their livelihood, the Detroit News reports they can’t even get their congressional representatives to stand up for them.

According to David Williams, a fifth-generation soybean farmer in Elise, Michigan, the 25 percent tariff imposed by China in retaliation for the president’s tariffs is killing the agricultural sector.

Williams pointed the finger directly at President Donald Trump, who he believes was put in the White House by rural mid-westerners like himself.

“I feel like agriculture has supported the current administration,” Williams explained. “I don’t feel that support coming back to us.”

According to Williams, Trump’s tariffs were put in place over disputes over intellectual property, and that the retaliatory Chinese tariffs have turned farmers into collateral damage.

“The farmers didn’t do it,” Williams said. “We’re the bright spot in the economy.”

He went on to explain that declining farm income means less money to be spent on new equipment which will have a ripple effect on the manufacturing sector.

Worst of all, Williams says that, after a visit to Washington D.C. to meet with lawmakers and White House officials, farmers’ worries are being ignored.
your GOP congress ignoring you??? why, I Nevah!!!
“So far,” he lamented, “our pleas have fallen on deaf ears.”
