Fascism Revisits Italy

Post by Drak »

And the GOP cheers. Because, why wouldn’t they?

https://www.salon.com/2022/09/26/coming ... e_partner/
As much of the world watched with alarm as the fascist Fratelli d'Italia party led a far-right coalition to victory in Italy on Sunday, Republican lawmakers in the United States had a much different reaction: Open glee.

Pointing happily to the far-right's recent electoral surge in Sweden, U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., tweeted that "the entire world is beginning to understand that the Woke Left does nothing but destroy."

"Nov. 8 is coming soon and the USA will fix our House and Senate!" added Boebert, a loyalist to former U.S. President Donald Trump. "Let freedom reign!"

U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., a far-right ally of Boebert's in the U.S. House, also applauded Sunday's results, which position Fratelli d'Italia leader Giorgia Meloni to become Italy's next prime minister even though her party won just around 25% of the vote in a low-turnout contest.

"Congratulations to Giorgio Meloni and to the people of Italy," Greene wrote on Twitter, misspelling the right-wing leader's first name.

her post, Greene linked to a 2019 speech in which Meloni—who was a youth member of the fascist Italian Social Movement—railed against supposed attacks on "national identity" and "religious identity" and vowed to "defend God, country, and family."

Rank-and-file House Republicans were hardly alone in applauding what's likely to be the most right-wing government in Italy since the death of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.

U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., the House minority whip, said in a Fox News appearance Sunday that "it's interesting to see that Europe is leading the way by throwing out socialists with conservatives—and great bold conservative women like Meloni and [U.K. Prime Minister Liz] Truss."

"We need to bring that kind of conservatism to the United States," Scalise added.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, for his part, hailed as "spectacular" Meloni's 2019 address to the World Congress of Families, a far-right Christian fundamentalist organization that campaigns against LGBTQ+ rights globally.

This is Italy’s new Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

I’ve never heard any politician so perfectly explain what we’re up against and why we fight.

When you watch this video, you’ll quickly realize why the establishment is afraid of her.

I saw part of her vile Blackshirt speech.

What we are fighting with Glennfs and these board cons, the GQP, the alt-right, and the rest of these killers is a global movement.

They also have influence in this country and the parasitic nature of their collusion is quite mutual.

Protect yourselves from these proxy-murderers.

Solipsistic conservative white man sez nothing to see here, as another literal fascist gains control.

Nothing that comes of it will affect YOU, so everyone else on earth must also put their heads in the same sand you do.

You noticed that carefree response too.

Sure, minorities will be attacked, but hey, I am not a minority so what do I care?

THE JEWISH HIGH HOLY DAYS
Rosh Hashanah: The New Year 5783

....David Baddiel’s book Jews Don’t Count explores how at a time when so much religious and cultural prejudice is rightfully challenged, antisemitism gets a pass from many who are usually so concerned about racism and bigotry. To some of us, that’s chilling.

A characteristic shared by Judaism and Islam, yet uniquely different than Christianity, is that our theology is intermixed with the history of our people. Standing up for each other is one of the ways we stand up for God. So this year, in committing ourselves to God, in asking that our hearts be purified, in atoning for our sins and committing to being the people God would have us be, we are rightfully aware of our commitment not only to Him but to those who share our religion. Dark clouds of antisemitic tropes have turned into tragic, deadly forces unleashed against us before - less than a hundred years ago. It isn’t funny and we must never forget.

Make no mistake about it: the neofascism gaining ground in the world today, including here in the United States, considers Jews a number one target. Crowds in Charlottesville (you remember, those “good people on both sides”?) chanted the old trope “Jews shall not replace us.” Swastikas are seen on flags at political rallies and painted as graffiti on the sides of synagogues. The new prime minister of Italy, Georgia Meloni, says that “Mussolini was a good politician. Everything he did, he did for Italy,” when in fact Mussolini sent over 7,000 Italian Jews to their deaths at Auschwitz.

Regardless of our tribal or religious identity, we should remember these words of Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” All of us need to learn more truth and leave fewer lies unchallenged. Educating ourselves about racism and bigotry - wherever it exists - is important, and standing up to hate wherever we see or hear it, is important. A little bit of antisemitism is like a little bit of cancer. Do everything possible to make sure it doesn’t spread.

Weird how Italy's first female PM will also be its first neo-Fascist and member of the "Brothers of Italy". Her coalition will also contain "Bunga Bunga" Berlusconi and Mussoloni's grandchild. We know she's been active in Italian Movement Fascism since back in the day. So comparisons between her and the founder of Fascism are inevitable.

No shock, Bannon helped her campaign, other MAGA-GOPers are celebrating her ascent. She believes in the even more hardcore version of Great Replacement Theory, the kind even F**ker Carlson is careful not to endorse openly.

Yes, Italy has a long history of unstable parliamentary coalitions, but that doesn't mean this current one is unimportant. And as for anti-Semitism, let's not forget it was Italy that named and bounded the first Ghettoes for Jews.
