Progressive veterans group launches campaign labeling Trump as a 'national security threat'
https://thehill.com/homenews/media/4696 ... ity-threat" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

One of the largest progressive veterans groups in the country is launching a new campaign against President Trump on Monday that seeks to raise pressure on several Republican senators up for reelection next year.

To mark Veterans Day, VoteVets will fly planes over key Senate battleground states like North Carolina, Arizona, Kentucky and Colorado Monday morning, with a banner that reads: “Vets: Trump is a National Security Threat.” The group seeks to specifically target Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Sen. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.), Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.).

“In less than a year, voters will go to the polls. We intend to remind them every day between now and then that Donald Trump is a national security threat and that these key Senate Republicans encourage and enable him at every step of the way,” Jon Soltz, chairman of VoteVets, wrote in a statement announcing the campaign.

In addition to the planes, the group also plans to run digital ads and to launch a website detailing all the ways in which Trump has posed a national security threat to the United States. This includes everything from allegedly “inviting foreign interference in our elections” to “raiding funds for our military families to build his wall.”

Trump intervenes in military justice cases, grants pardons

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has pardoned a former U.S. Army commando set to stand trial next year in the killing of a suspected Afghan bomb-maker and a former Army lieutenant convicted of murder for ordering his men to fire upon three Afghans, killing two, the White House announced late Friday.

The commander in chief also ordered a promotion for a decorated Navy SEAL convicted of posing with a dead Islamic State captive in Iraq.

Democrats seize on report of FedEx's $0 tax bill to slam Trump's tax plan

Democrats are seizing on a report published by The New York Times on Sunday that found FedEx didn’t owe anything in taxes in fiscal 2018, a year after President Trump signed off on a $1.5 trillion tax cut that sharply reduced tax rates for corporations in the country.

According to the Times, the package signed by Trump in December 2017, for which FedEx reportedly lobbied hard, spelled good news the following year for the shipping company, which would later see a 34 percent drop in its effective tax rate in fiscal 2018. Its tax rate was reportedly brought to less than zero at the time.

House panel agrees to temporary stay of Trump subpoena to allow Supreme Court to weigh in on financial records

The House Oversight Committee told the Supreme Court on Monday that it would not oppose President Trump's request for an administrative stay of an appeals court ruling granting House Democrats access to his financial records.

The panel said in a letter to the high court that it would not oppose a 10-day administrative stay while the justices decide whether to take up Trump's appeal. The committee also said it would file a response to Trump's motion by Friday.

Judge rebuffs Trump’s bid to delay woman’s defamation suit

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump lost his latest bid Monday to delay a former “Apprentice” contestant’s defamation suit as he faces a Jan. 31 deadline to undergo pretrial questioning in the case, which involves claims of unwanted kissing and groping.

A New York appellate judge rejected Trump’s request, meaning that Summer Zervos’ case can continue, at least for now. Trump’s lawyers signaled they intend to pursue more legal avenues to try to hold off Summer Zervos’ case.

Jimmy Finkelstein, the owner of The Hill, has flown under the radar. But he's played a key role in the Ukraine scandal

New York (CNN Business)James "Jimmy" Finkelstein, the owner of The Hill newspaper, is not a widely known media executive, but he is one of the era's most consequential.

Finkelstein resides at the nexus of President Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and John Solomon, the now-former executive at The Hill and current Fox News contributor who pushed conspiracy theories about Ukraine into the public conversation.

California Supreme Court says law requiring presidential candidates to turn over tax returns is invalid

(CNN) The California Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously ruled the state's new law that requires presidential candidates to disclose their tax returns for the previous five years to get on the ballot is invalid.

The ruling is a win for President Donald Trump, who is resisting efforts to turn over his tax returns.

It's basically Louise Mensch's personal blog. She's a UK ex-pol and blogger.

While I do believe in many of the parameters of Russiagate, Mensch sometimes puts forward some wild theories I can't countenance.

She's a Tory and a pal of the Murdochs, but quickly on became a Trump hater and Trump-Russia blogger.

It's very weird to see her put on the furthest left of the spectrum, as I would say most of her political beliefs remain pretty Conservative. But she hates Trump and has since the beginning, in the U.S. I guess she would be called a "nevertrumper".

Also, BTW, anyone calling the New Republic "Hyper Partisan Liberal" hasn't been reading it lately ... just saying.

Progressives are trying to win over rural Trump voters in ‘the worst possible way’

Devin Poore grew up near the northeast corner of Washington State. Ferry County is one of the poorest in the state, with a median household income of 41,000 (contrasted with a state median of 66,000), and one of the most Republican. Sixty-one percent of those voting in 2016 cast their ballots for Donald Trump, compared to 38 percent statewide.

A mountain pass divides the county into two regions: to the south, a reservation that is home to remnants of the Colville tribe, and to the north, a sparsely populated landscape that is home to remnants of communities centered on logging, mining and ranching. Curlew, where Poore attended high school, boasted a population of 150.

Fired from The New York Times over Trump

When I saw that infamous “Trump Urges Unity vs. Racism” headline in The New York Times, I was not surprised in the least. And when I learned that it had set off subscription cancelations among outraged readers, I thought: “Finally! What took so long?”

Having spent eight years taking deep daily dives into New York Times stories as a copy editor, I can with confidence impart this bit of news fit to print: The Gray Lady has, ever since Trump’s election, been playing an insidious double game to ensure its survival.

Unlikely

I predicted Trump would win in 2016 — and I’m predicting the same for 2020. Here’s why liberals don’t understand what he represents

I predicted well before the 2016 presidential election that Donald Trump would be elected. I had felt that way ever since he rode down that golden escalator with his rapist invective. Ever since he was elected, I’ve also believed that he’ll be re-elected, more easily this time.

An illustrative personal anecdote, one of many over the last three years: A creative writing PhD I know with tons of debt, whose wife happens to be an undocumented Filipina, became mightily angered by the promise of student debt cancelation. What about those who have paid their dues by taking out debt, he asked? No doubt he would refuse a blanket amnesty for “illegals” too. His DACA wife, as he sees it, paid her dues.

Three more Navy SEALs spared review after Trump's intervention

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Navy announced on Wednesday it would scrap plans to carry out reviews of three Navy SEALs that could have led to their ouster from the elite force, after President Donald Trump’s extraordinary intervention in a related case.

“I have determined that any failures in conduct, performance, judgment, or professionalism exhibited by these officers be addressed through other administrative measures as appropriate,” acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly said in a statement.

President Donald Trump and the first lady arrived in Afghanistan Thursday to pay a surprise Thanksgiving visit to US troops, his first trip to the country.

It’s the President and Melania Trump’s second visit to US troops overseas in a war zone following a trip to Iraq at the end of last year. This visit comes amid unprecedented tensions between the President and senior military officers after the ouster of Navy Secretary Richard Spencer.

Georgia’s GOP governor to defy Trump after ‘tense’ White House meeting

In an attempt to win back women who’ve abandoned the GOP in recent years, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp plans to appoint financial executive Kelly Loeffler to a US Senate seat next week, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The move contradicts the wishes of President Trump and others in the GOP, who pushed for the appointment of Trump loyalist U.S. Rep. Doug Collins. The appointment is intended to fill the seat of Republican Johnny Isakson, who is stepping down due to health issues.

Noam Chomsky warns a centrist Democratic nominee will result in the ‘tragedy’ of a second Trump term

December 7 will be Noam Chomsky’s 91st birthday, and the veteran author/journalist hasn’t grown any less critical of centrism within the Democratic Party. During an interview with Truthout’s C.J. Polychroniou, Chomsky warned against Democrats going too centrist in the 2020 presidential election — which he fears could result in President Donald Trump winning a second term.

“I find it psychologically impossible to discuss the 2020 election without emphasizing, as strongly as possible, what is at stake: survival, nothing less,” Chomsky told Truthout. “Four more years of Trump may spell the end of much of life on Earth, including organized human society in any recognizable form. Strong words, but not strong enough.”

Ex-FBI official Lisa Page says Trump's relentless attacks led her to break silence

Former FBI attorney Lisa Page has broken her silence to tell The Daily Beast about the impact of being singled out for "degrading" attacks by President Donald Trump as he sought to portray the Russia investigation as a partisan hit job.

The president and his allies have kept up a steady stream of attacks against Page, who worked as a trial attorney on then-Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into the Trump campaign's ties to Russia.

Trump, lawyers won’t participate in upcoming impeachment hearing

President Donald Trump and his lawyers will not participate in Wednesday’s impeachment hearing in the House Judiciary Committee, according to a letter from the White House to the committee obtained by ABC News.

"As for the hearing scheduled for December 4, we cannot fairly be expected to participate in a hearing while the witnesses are yet to be named and while it remains unclear whether the Judiciary Committee will afford the President a fair process through additional hearings. More importantly, an invitation to an academic discussion with law professors does not begin to provide the President with any semblance of a fair process. Accordingly, under the current circumstances, we do not intend to participate in your Wednesday hearing," White House counsel Pat Cipollone wrote in a Sunday evening letter to Chairman Jerry Nadler.

Appeals court refuses to block House subpoena for Trump’s financial records

NEW YORK — A federal appeals court has sided with House Democrats seeking to obtain President Trump’s private financial records from Deutsche Bank and Capital One, stating that "the public interest favors denial of a preliminary injunction.”

The ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit came in the ongoing legal battle Trump has waged over access to his private business records — including two cases that have already reached the Supreme Court.

Psychiatrists send urgent warning to Congress about Trump’s deteriorating mental state as hearing begins

A petition signed by at least 350 mental health professionals was delivered to the House Judiciary Committee warning that President Donald Trump shows signs of mentally unraveling, according to The Independent.

Two House Democrats push a clever plan that calls Republicans’ bluff on their Biden attacks

Democratic Reps. Katie Porter of California and Max Rose of New York introduced a clever plan this week that will expose whether Republicans’ criticisms of former Vice President Joe Biden in the Ukraine scandal reflect good faith — or if, as many assume, they are just a shameful distraction and a bluff.

The lawmakers announced a bill on Wednesday called the Transparency in Executive Branch Officials’ Finances Act. It has two key components:

Head of Jewish Democratic Council of America denounces Trump speech as anti-Semitic

The executive director of the Jewish Democratic Council of America told Salon on Sunday that President Donald Trump’s recent comments about Jewish voters continue “what has been a very negative stereotype of Jews and money and power.”

“He has said in the past that he wants Jews to be the ones counting his money,” Halie Soifer told Salon. “He has repeatedly made references to what has been a very negative stereotype of Jews and money and power.” After saying that “I think that he must believe it, and that is why he continues to repeat it,” Soifer noted that Trump was repeating claims that he has made when “typically speaking extemporaneously, and clearly he’s speaking from his heart. It’s clear that there’s quite a bit of hatred in it.” Soifer also criticized Trump for having “views of Jews as driven largely by money, which is why he said at this events that Jews have no choice but to support him, referring to tax cuts.”

Democrats and the Trump administration near a tentative North American trade deal

House Democrats and the Trump administration are near a deal on to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement after more than a year of deliberations, sources told CNBC.

If the White House sends ratifying legislation to Congress by Dec. 15 to kick off the approval process, the Democratic-held House could vote on ratifying the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement by Dec. 18, two sources informed by the White House tell CNBC. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will make the final scheduling determinations, and the USMCA vote could come in the immediate aftermath of a vote on articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, these sources said.
