The idiot attacks on drag shows
Re: The idiot attacks on drag shows
Hey wait a minute now, I don't support jailing people for wearing different clothes, sure when they do it I'm not going to say a word or do anything and I will still vote for the politicians who do it, but I don't support it So be nice to me!
I sigh in your general direction.
Re: The idiot attacks on drag shows
Those aren't anti trans laws. They are simply setting community values. Preventing salacious displays in the presence if children.
If you are referring to the Florida law that prohibits teaching sexuality to children 9 and under homosexuality is never mentioned in that law.
I am going to be home this weekend should I be able to take my 8 year old grandson to the local strip joint

Why go to the strip joint? Why not just have them strip at 1st and Main? Call it a parade.Glennfs wrote: ↑Mon Mar 20, 2023 2:24 pm Those aren't anti trans laws. They are simply setting community values. Preventing salacious displays in the presence if children.

And again, there’s already laws against “salacious displays”. This is about censorship.
And the Florida laws ARE anti-gay. You KNOW they are, but you’re more than willing to throw gays under the bus, aren’t you?
What do you if there’s a school function in Florida, and a gay couple show up with their kids? The teachers are forbidden from answering Any questions. I mean, it’s legal, but you want to keep it all in the closet.
And you guys don’t give a fuck, do you? Fuck the gays! Fuck the trans!

So why does the state want to outlaw drag, but not that?

Liberty aside for now, here's the thing Joe....JoeMemphis wrote: ↑Mon Mar 20, 2023 11:17 am I’m not advocating anything unconstitutional.
All I am saying is that people have a right to set standards within their community as long as they do not violate the constitution or state and local laws. You don’t have to agree with them. I don’t have to agree with them. So if a community doesn’t want bars or liquor by the drink, they can pass that law. If they want to set the speed limits to 20 mph, they can set that law. There isn’t anything unconstitutional about that.
If you want to live like they live in Sturgis, then move to Sturgis or visit there on a regular basis. Your local community may not want to allow bars to operate in that manner. You have no right to force that on them. There is nothing unconstitutional about that.

So now i take a look at both communities. Corinth MS on one hand, and the LGBTQ Community Center in Manhattan's West Village community on the other. For the life of me i can't figure out why Corinth has their undees in a bind. They're not under physical attack like the West Village is.One man was arrested and another left bloodied as dozens protested a Drag Story Hour event in New York City on Sunday, according to videos shared on social media and in local news reports. At least some of the protesters appeared to be affiliated with the Proud Boys, a far-right extremist group.
The protest took place outside the LGBTQ Community Center in Manhattan's West Village neighborhood, where New York Attorney General Letitia James was hosting a Drag Story Hour event, with drag performers reading children’s books to kids and their families. Drag has deep historical ties to the LGBTQ community, and the The Center is just a short walk away from the iconic Stonewall Inn, arguably the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ rights movement.

Re: The idiot attacks on drag shows
So I take a look at both communities as well. Why should Corinth have to adopt the community standards of Manhattan? Perhaps it makes sense to let the people of NY focus on NY. I don’t condone violence in either community. I don’t condone hate in either community. But I also respect the right of people to set standards for the communities in which they live. That’s the reason we have state and local elections. That’s also the reason we have a Constitution, a Bill of Rights, and a judiciary to prevent unconstitutional behavior.bradman wrote: ↑Mon Mar 20, 2023 4:16 pm Liberty aside for now, here's the thing Joe....

Here’s another idea. Perhaps the DA and the Gov in that state should focus on putting the folks who protested violently in jail? There’s an idea, actually putting repeat offenders in jail. Makes more sense to me than no cash bail and defunding the police force in NYC. Whose bonehead idea was that?
So folks can choose to live where they please. Personally I would choose Corinth over NYC. Any day.
Re: The idiot attacks on drag shows
My friends community in a CA county is very anti Black people. They want to reserve the right to outlaw public gatherings of Black people.
Based on the dumbshits around here, that would be OK.

Re: The idiot attacks on drag shows
This is what the right is talking about when they want to break up the USA, to drive out those who they don't like. I can say for certain that were I black or gay, I would NOT have chosen Tennessee. Neither Tennessee nor Florida are friendly states for blacks or gays. And the right is working to make it worse every day for both groups.JoeMemphis wrote: ↑Mon Mar 20, 2023 5:11 pm So folks can choose to live where they please. And people like Glenn and Joe and very supportive of that movement. To drive out those they hate. I mean, to outlaw people from dressing as they please is just insane.
I remember that workers at my old aircraft plant in the nineties chose to wear dresses to protest not being able to wear shorts in the summer while women could wear dresses in the plant. After the press covered the action, plant management relented.
But in Joe and Glenn's world, the protesters would have instead be sent to jail.
Re: The idiot attacks on drag shows
No the Florida law says nothing about sexual orientation. It simply bans teaching children most of whom still believe in Santa Claus about adult sexuality.gounion wrote: ↑Mon Mar 20, 2023 2:56 pm I’m sure you wouldn’t mind doing so.

Re: The idiot attacks on drag shows
Oh? And how old were you when you stopped believing in Santa Claus? I stopped BEFORE I started school.
And children today understand about two moms or two dads. This isn't the 1950's.
How are teachers supposed to act when two moms show up for a school event and they are asked about it?
I mean, it's LEGAL today. But you want to keep it in the closet, don't you?
You obviously don't recall being a child.

Makes one wonder what Scott was afraid of, no?CORINTH, MS (WMC) - A man charged with beating up a gay man in Corinth, Mississippi says he snapped, not because the man was gay, but because of what he feared the man would reveal to the rest of the world.
James Scott faces assault charges for what he did to Devin Norman at the Corinth Walmart on Friday.
Norman and his supporters say Scott should be charged with more than assault. They want Scott to face hate crime charges, because they say he attacked Norman for being homosexual.
ahhhh.....
It appears that Scott's fear is founded in the "community standards" of the majority. He says Norman scared him by threatening to post lewd pictures and messages between them to Facebook for the world to see.
"I was screaming, and I said, 'Don't you dare post that. Don't you dare post that on Facebook,'" Scott said.
Scott says he has been in the closet as a bisexual, and he was afraid of how posting those messages would change his life.
"I was in fear for what my kids were going to think. I wasn't ready to tell anybody," Scott said.
Which brings me back to the "public" community standards that we all should be able share when gathering in common areas. Even in Corinth.
Anything less is an assault on one groups liberties. Which, to me, seems to be a bit unconstitutional.

Seems that's what pisses some people off the most. Prominent people supporting a group of people that some, according to their high community standards, find morally corrupt.where New York Attorney General Letitia James was hosting a Drag Story Hour event

I am also not about dictating to other people how they choose to live their lives. But I also accept that living in a community means that we can't just do anything we please and in some cases we have to take into consideration the rights and feeling of other members of the community. Now I get that many folks here think they are smarter than everyone else and should be able to prescribe a one size fits all solution for the every diverse community across the nation. I'm not that guy. I favor allowing communities to decide certain things for themselves. We have local and state elections, the judiciary and courts, the Constitution and Bill of Rights to serve as guardrails. I don't necessarily think that what works in Manhattan works equally well in Corinth or Sturgis for that matter. So expecting someone living in a community 1000 miles away should live their lives according to the standards set by the community in which you live is an assault on the liberties of that faraway community to decide how they wish to live their lives and conduct their affairs. Which, to me, seems to be a bit unconstitutional.
Cheers

And you’ll pretend no one could have seen that coming.
Your state - as well as mine - is going after gays. The Pulse Club massacre is what you’re voting for, Joe. Florida has a LOT of problems, but DeSantis is going after Disney because they used their right of free speech, he’s removing all black history from all the schools, even colleges, and his don’t-say-gay law and his attacks on people in drag is all he cares about.
And you support him.
So quit spewing your platitudes. This isn’t a community, it’s a STATE coming down on a minority, as bad as what was happening in Germany to the Jews, and you’re on board with all of it.
Re: The idiot attacks on drag shows
If these states believe in local community standards, why are they banning drag shows statewide, whether they be performed in big cities or small rural towns throughout the state. I accept their local community standards may vary, but then state regulations would seem to be a one-size fit-all solution imposed on everybody in the state.
Of course, BTW, I was the one arguing for local communities to set their own COVID responses, without state interference, too (whether here in Florida or elsewhere). Tallahassee should not be dictating to Miami Beach how to respond. I guess I'm the one who believes in decentralization of power.
DeSantis is now sending state investigators to monitor and tape drag shows. As for me, I too would rather state resources go toward stopping violent criminals than shutting down drag shows. Waste of taxpayer resources, and all that.

Wear a yellow Star of David…that was just community standards.
One wonders what impacts a child more: active shooter drills or seeing a man in a dress. How about a child’s father beating his mother or a couple of women walking holding hands.
Community standards is agitprop for laws against people that we don’t like.

But bottomline Brad, your last paragraph says it all. I’m not asking or expecting you or anyone else to live by someone else’s standards. You have every right to expect me to follow the Constitution and there is only one of them. One version.
I’m not about to dictate to members in your community how to run and manage that community. All I expect is for them to do so lawfully and constitutionally. Exactly how they go about that is not up to me.
