I could start citing some stats here as is usually my inkling, but then I guess being woke means you accept facts. Though I agree whether you do something about injustice is an ethical and policy decision.

The history of the term "woke" is much older than current usage. It needs to be pointed out the term started in Black communities as part of Black Vernacular ... but during the early 20th century. Not just ten years ago.

CJ used to point out a lot of those things. Ah, I miss her.

Wake up Africa!” as a call to global Black citizens to become more socially and politically conscious. A few years later, the phrase “stay woke” turned up as part of a spoken afterword in the 1938 song “Scottsboro Boys,” a protest song by Blues musician Huddie Ledbetter, a.k.a. Lead Belly. The song describes the 1931 saga of a group of nine Black teenagers in Scottsboro, Arkansas, who were accused of raping two white women.

Lead Belly says at the end of an archival recording of the song that he’d met with the Scottsboro defendants’ lawyer, who introduced him to the men themselves. “I made this little song about down there,” Lead Belly says. “So I advise everybody, be a little careful when they go along through there — best stay woke, keep their eyes open.”

Lead Belly uses “stay woke” in explicit association with Black Americans’ need to be aware of racially motivated threats and the potential dangers of white America. Lead Belly’s usage has largely stayed the common, consistent one ever since, including during one notable brush with the mainstream in 1962, via the New York Times.

It doesn't matter what the subject is because because having a deeper understanding of the facts is always better. And if those fact differ with our deep-seated beliefs hopefully each of us is wise enough acknowledge it and to change our beliefs.

Indeed, it's been around since well before I was born. That's a long, long time indeed.

This war over the language is getting to be a royal pain in the ass for everybody. Show biz is, of course, ground zero in this particular war, and both sides are armed and dangerous. You need a database program on your cell phone to keep up with this week's version of politically acceptable language. One slip on Twitter and there goes your career.

In the real world, though, it's clear that most of the actual policing is being done by the right. They act like the fundamentals of American freedom are under attack if you say words like "woke" that they don't even understand.

Critical race theory is another one. The right carries on as if people are using it to brainwash first graders. It's a graduate law school elective for Chrissake. It's a legal theory open to some debate, and both sides are presented in the discussion. Grad students are smart enough to understand this, trust me. I spent more years as one than you want to think about.

All the right is really doing is revealing their willful ignorance of history.

BTW the phrase "failure of nerve" was originally popularized by an art historian to explain the retreat into mannerism after some of the kind of people that we currently refer to as "influencers" became afraid that the Italian Renaissance was moving too far too fast. A failure of nerve does not have to change the ideas of all the people, just the ones who are loudest and most newsworthy.

From what I can see at this distance, the ascendancy of one affinity group in FL over the many other ones there is a textbook case of a failure of nerve.

I doubt that the transition from Renaissance to Mannerism had any effect on migration to Italy. It made the art a lot more boring, but then most people don't care about art, so have fun.

I don't personally care if half the US population moves to the South. You deserve a little taste of what turned SoCal from paradise into an overcrowded polluted depressing smelly sewer with nightly cop pursuits, relentless crime, shoddy overpriced shitty places to live, and bullets routinely arching overhead. Maybe it'll help overcrowding in places I'd be caught dead in.

It also seems as if New York is also doing just fine despite the southward migration. It's currently the most expensive city in the world, and maybe if enough of the economic demand went and joined your fine citizens it would help inflation in any place I care to set foot in. The only problem with Gold Coasts is that you can't eat gold.
