CAYETANO: Yale shot Stephanie Washington - Yale Daily News

Quote:
How do we know she was innocent? The driver, Paul Witherspoon III, was released without charges, without even so much as a fingerprinting. His mother, Keisha Greene, confirmed as much during a community meeting with Hamden mayor Curt Leng and acting Police Chief John Cappiello, among other officials.

Moreover, a video taken by a neighbor contradicts the official narrative that claims the driver “exited the vehicle in an abrupt manner.” As Witherspoon’s red car is slowing down, one officer is seen exiting his car, drawing his gun, moving to the passenger side and quickly emptying his magazine into the passenger-side window. Perhaps most suggestively, the officer continues to shoot even as he runs away.

As we analyze this video, we cannot discount the fact that the officer, visibly afraid, is entering into a neighborhood that is unfamiliar and shrouded in racist symbolism. Newhallville is simultaneously one of the most heavily policed and one of the poorest communities in New Haven. Newhallville’s legacy in the public eye would not have been lost on the officer, who reacted in ways he would never have in certain, white parts of Hamden.

The whitewashed, diluted and abbreviated account initially provided to the students by the administration betrays our institution’s interest in minimizing and deflecting responsibility for its involvement in the incident.

According to the “public safety advisory” email, the Yale police officer was responding to a request for assistance from the Hamden police. Both the Hamden police officer and the Yale police officer “discharged their weapons,” and “a passenger in the vehicle was struck.” The email — laden with euphemistic language, passive voice, and equivocation—is not an advisory notice, but the first attempt at justification.

News headlines that continue to identify Witherspoon and Washington as suspects and not the victims of police brutality—or even simply Connecticut residents — are equally responsible for misrepresenting the truth. A media that relies exclusively on official narratives are servants of official narratives.

Johns Hopkins is also struggling with a cops-on-campus problem. There has been a lot of student actvism around it. A person I know there (like, actually know, not a FB friend) is faculty in support of the students.

Maryland General Assembly gives final OK to armed Johns Hopkins University police force - Baltimore Sun

Quote:
Maryland lawmakers have given final approval to a bill that will allow the Johns Hopkins University to form its own police force in Baltimore.

The Senate voted 42-2 to approve the final version of the bill, dubbed the “Community Safety and Strengthening Act.” The two votes against came from Baltimore’s Sen. Mary Washington and Sen. Jill P. Carter, who have both expressed deep reservations about allowing the creation of a police force for a private institution.

Washington said she believes fundamentally that “policing should be a publicly controlled entity and that privatization is not the way to go.”

Many of Maryland’s public universities have their own police departments, including including Morgan State University, Coppin State University and the University of Baltimore. But Hopkins — as a private institution — is not currently authorized to have such a force.

The bill will enable Hopkins to have a police force of up to 100 armed officers that will patrol in a defined area around its Homewood academic campus, the medical campus in East Baltimore and the Peabody Institute conservatory in Mount Vernon. The police officers can only patrol beyond their defined perimeter if Hopkins gains support from neighbors.

The bill also requires the state to provide millions of dollars in funding to community programs in Baltimore.

Public police at a private U. Something that makes cons cream in their undies.

That will catch Johns Hopkins University up with Stanford University here in California, they'll both be private universities with a public police force.

Yeah Stanford itself is its own zip code. #GoBears

Gotta say, they do have pretty decent community borrowing prices at Green Library.

They ought to.

It's happening again to Johnny Eric Williams, the subject of the OP.

Speech on Blast (Again) at Trinity - IE

Quote:
Williams faced death threats -- and Trinity briefly shut down -- in 2017 after he wrote on social media about that year’s shooting at members of Congress practicing for a baseball game. The point of the discussion was that a lawmaker who opposed LGBTQ rights and reportedly one spoke at a meeting of white supremacists was saved by a black lesbian first responder. Using a phrase he did not create to share his own post, Williams wrote, "#letthemfuckingdie." He and his supporters say that the hashtag was rhetorical, not a literal call for anyone's death.

After a college investigation into his comments, Williams was eventually cleared of wrongdoing. Berger-Sweeney said at the time that “the principles that underlie this particular set of events go far beyond the actions of any one person. These involve principles that concern how we think about academic freedom and freedom of speech, as well as the responsibilities that come with those fundamental values.”

Williams said at the time that he was “heartbroken” over the college’s response to him, but both he and Trinity cited a need for “space” from each other.

‘Whiteness Is Terrorism’

In recent days Williams has again caught flak for new Facebook posts about race. In one, he wrote, “White kneegrows really need a lot of therapy and a good ol' ass kicking.” He later clarified that he was talking about black Republican commentator Candace Owens, but also “other and less brazen but more insidious dangerous ‘white’ kneegrows like Barry and Michelle Obama.”

On Easter, Williams tweeted that “Whiteness is terrorism.”

“All self-identified white people (no exceptions) are invested in and collude with systemic white racism/white supremacy,” he also said.

Alumni soon brought the posts to public attention, with some calling for Williams’s ouster. He was lambasted by Tucker Carlson, a far-right conservative commentator and Trinity alum, for example.

Berger-Sweeney said in her public statement that “Twitter is a challenging place for a thoughtful discourse, which is clear from this example.” But her invocation of Williams’s academic freedom hasn’t wavered.

Berger-Sweeney used a similar tone in an all-campus memo that did not reference Williams by name.

“As an educational institution -- with a foundation built on academic freedom and freedom of expression and inquiry -- we embrace this important work and the opportunity it provides to nurture a learning environment that values differences and seeks debate and discussion,” she wrote. “Where else should these debates occur, if not here?”

Williams said in an interview Tuesday that he’s received some racist emails and messages but nothing so unnerving as the threats from two years ago. Asked if Berger-Sweeney’s support made a difference, Williams said he wouldn’t call her reaction “support.”

Also, this part

Quote:

is inaccurate. He shared a post by Son of Baldwin that contained the hashtag.

Turning Point USA Boots Student After ‘Abhorrent’ Video of ‘White Power’ Chants Goes Viral - Beast

"Alarming," the Daily Beast calls this. Yeah that's one word for it.

Quote:
The conservative youth nonprofit Turning Point USA says it has booted a student from its organization after a viral video appeared to show members of its Las Vegas chapter shouting “White power! Fuck the n-----s!” “As soon as the video in question came to the attention of Turning Point USA staff, we swiftly and permanently removed the student from any current or future involvement with our organization,” TPUSA said in a statement on Twitter. “His comments were abhorrent, un-American, and disqualifying.” TPUSA did not identify the student who was booted from the group, however. Last week, the organization’s former communications director Candace Owens—who previously said, “If Hitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, OK, fine”—stepped down from her position.

“Turning Point is an amazing organization that is fighting a cultural war on college campuses,” Owens wrote in an Instagram post last week. “We love our freedom-fighting students. We love our campus clashes.”

Last-Minute Tenure Threat - IHE

Quote:
Governing boards typically rubber-stamp tenure bids for professors whose colleagues and administrators have already recommended them for promotion.

But the tenure bid of one University of Mississippi sociologist hung in the balance Thursday as the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning debated his record for two hours in a closed-door session. None of the other dozens of professors up for promotion triggered such a discussion.

James M. Thomas, the sociologist, was ultimately granted tenure -- with dissent, the board said in an announcement. The public notice didn’t refer to Thomas by name but made clear it was him in citing “recent concerns regarding certain statements by the professor on social media.”

In October, during the national debate over U.S. Supreme Court justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation, Thomas caught flak from Mississippi’s then president, Jeffrey Vitter, for tweeting, “Don’t just interrupt a senator’s meal, y’all.” At the time, several GOP figures -- including Texas senator Ted Cruz and White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders -- had been disrupted by public critics at restaurants, prompting discussions about whether that's acceptable.

Put “your whole damn fingers in their salads,” Thomas said. “Take their apps and distribute them to the other diners. Bring boxes, and take their food home with you on the way out. They don’t deserve your civility.”

While “I passionately support free speech,” Vitter said, “I condemn statements that encourage acts of aggression.”

Thomas’s statement also received national media attention -- much of it negative. Mississippi state senator Chris McDaniel was among those who publicly urged Mississippi to punish Thomas, saying, “Another threat from another low-life liberal,” and, “It’s time for disciplinary action.”

Thomas, who’s said he received threats over his post, didn’t stop tweeting. He later said, “Run for office. Get elected. Pass legislation that harms large groups of people. And I will stick my whole foot in your lunch. Deal?”

The board said in its announcement that it examined whether “those statements were in keeping with the requirements for tenure” set by university policy. Those include the examining the "candidate's effectiveness in interpersonal relationships, including professional ethics and cooperativeness, in making decisions regarding tenure," it said.

This story about this stupid little fascist that got kicked out of Harvard before even getting there has been filling up my TL today. He's Turning Point USA.

Harvard Rescinds Offer To Parkland Survivor After Discovery Of Racist Comments - NPR

Quote:
Kashuv and Turning Point USA

Before these comments came to light, Kashuv was named an outreach director for the conservative campus group Turning Point USA. According to the Huffington Post, he stepped down when his former classmates threatened to make the messages public.

Turning Point USA has the slogan on its website "Winning America's Culture War." The group maintains a website called Professor Watchlist that lists the names and public profiles of hundreds of professors who have expressed personal views, such as calling people "racist" on Twitter, or who have published feminist research. Many of these professors have been doxed — that is, had their identity or address exposed — and harassed, as NPR reported last year.

Onstage at the Conservative Political Action Conference last March, President Trump publicly praised conservative activist Hayden Williams, who was punched while volunteering as a campus recruiter for Turning Point USA. The president brought Williams onstage when he talked about issuing an executive order to protect campus free speech.

Jessie Daniels, a sociology professor at Hunter College who studies racists and white supremacists online, says that the Kashuv incident plays neatly into Turning Point USA's broader agenda.

"Part of what the far right is doing in every domain is trying to push that line of what's acceptable," Daniels said. "The N-word has become one of the skirmishes in this larger war."

"Harvard is pushing back and saying, 'Nope, that's not acceptable behavior,' " Daniels said.

Look at these stupid bigots. They're the first to cry political correctness.

Conservative whites are so dependent on big government. They really ought to shut up about everyone else being "dependent". :problem:

Trump administration threatens to pull funding from UNC & Duke for promoting 'positive aspects of Islam' - ABC 11

Quote:
The Trump administration is threatening to cut funding for a Middle East studies program run by the University of North Carolina and Duke University, arguing that it's misusing a federal grant to advance "ideological priorities" and unfairly promote "the positive aspects of Islam" but not Christianity or Judaism.

An Aug. 29 letter from the U.S. Education Department orders the Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies to revise its offerings by Sept. 22 or risk losing future funding from a federal grant that's awarded to dozens of universities to support foreign language instruction. The consortium received $235,000 from the grant last year, according to Education Department data.

Officials at Duke and at UNC-Chapel Hill, which houses the consortium, declined to comment. The Education Department declined to say if it's examining similar programs at other schools.

Academic freedom advocates say the government could be setting a dangerous precedent if it injects politics into funding decisions. Some said they had never heard of the Education Department asserting control over such minute details of a program's offerings.

"Is the government now going to judge funding programs based on the opinions of instructors or the approach of each course?" said Henry Reichman, chairman of a committee on academic freedom for the American Association of University Professors. "The odor of right wing political correctness that comes through this definitely could have a chilling effect."

More than a dozen universities receive National Resource Center grants for their Middle East programs, including Columbia, Georgetown, Yale and the University of Texas. The Duke-UNC consortium was founded in 2005 and first received the grant nearly a decade ago.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos ordered an investigation into the program in June after North Carolina Rep. George Holding, a Republican, complained that it hosted a taxpayer-funded conference with "severe anti-Israeli bias and anti-Semitic rhetoric." In a response to Holding, DeVos said she was "troubled" by his letter and would take a closer look at the consortium.

The department's findings did not directly address any bias against Israel but instead evaluated whether the consortium's proposed activities met the goals of the National Resource Center program, which was created in 1965 to support language and culture initiatives that prepare students for careers in diplomacy and national security.

How interesting. Like all CZs, these people use Israel as a prop.

None of them should be here, this is a democracy and meant only for decent people.

Righty is scum. But I dont have to tell you that.

The deep deep damage these vile piles of human filth are doing to our country may never be fixed.

Any thought or idea that challenges their tiny minded view of the world is attacked.

UPDATE: Ga. Southern book burning sparks outrage, calls for civility - AJC

Bookburning is pretty uncivil. :problem:

Quote:
Georgia Southern University student leaders, faculty and its president aimed Friday to unite the school and distance it from widespread condemnation of video of a small group of students burning copies of a guest author’s book after an address earlier this week.

“(W)hile it’s within the students’ First Amendment rights, book burning does not align with Georgia Southern’s values nor does it encourage the civil discourse and debate of ideas,” the university’s president, Kyle Marrero, said in a message Friday afternoon to students, employees and faculty. “Yes, I wish our students had engaged in a reasoned discussion. And yes, I wish these discussions had not deteriorated or led to broad generalizations that paint an ugly picture about our university.”The author, Jennine Capó Crucet, was invited to the university’s main campus in Statesboro Wednesday evening to discuss her new book, “My Time Among the Whites: Notes From an Unfinished Education,” as part of the school’s orientation program for first-year students.

Crucet, an American-born daughter of Cuban immigrants, said she was asked to speak about diversity and the college experience. She discussed white privilege during the meeting. A white, female student questioned her credentials to discuss such topics, sparking a heated exchange among students, Crucet said in a one-page statement Friday.Crucet said after the meeting, she was moved by her campus hosts to another hotel — after some people came to her initial lodging — and later learned on Twitter about the book burning.

Well check this out.

AJS Response to the DOE Regarding Title VI Funding - Association for Jewish Studies (.pdf)

Quote:
Based on our values and direct involvement with Title VI efforts on university campuses around the country, we join with our colleagues in other learned societies in opposing this unprecedented and counterproductive intervention into academic curricula and programming that threatens the integrity and autonomy of our country’s institutions of higher education.

We strongly urge you to recognize the importance of academic freedom and relying on scholars with expertise in languages, area studies, and cultures to make curricular decisions.

Good on 'em. Lol f' Betsy DeVos, the dumb bigot.
